The Greatest Opening (or otherwise) Scenes Ever Thread.....

Aside from DDL and that bedside scene, the one that got him the awards, it's absolute tosh.

I don't agree. The set design and art direction on the movie is second to none. The only real weaknesses I felt it had was the performance of Cameron Diaz and Leo's accent was iffy at times. But, I loved the core story, DDL is a powerhouse, and the film looks amazing.

Maybe I didn't do enough research or was prepared enough for it prior to going into the cinema to watch it, but I just thought it was brutality for brutalities sake. Diaz was WAY out of her depth, now, she could handle it, amongst those actors, then, no way. Same may be argued for Leo but this was at the start of his 'golden age' so not sure. Agreed, set design and production values where strong, but for me, the violence put me off, and I know there are FAR more violent and violence led films out there, but the 'feel' of the brutality was too much, now I wasn't expecting 'light and fluffy' given the subject material nor the director involved but I felt it 'objectified' the violence.

Dark Knight and 2001 and all the usual. Love the one in Inglorious Basterds, so tense.

Marty has no issue with blood and violence, this is for sure. But, I don't think it glorifies it at the end of the day. But, I can see where maybe you would read that into it. Yeah, Diaz sticks out in a bad way. She was awful. I think being around DDL would so Leo some good down the road, but yes this was before Leo become the Leo we know today and it does show in his performance. He was still good, just that accent, LOL!

True Romance has a few absolute stand outs....

1)Dennis Hopper / Christopher Walken

2)Clarence retrieves Alabama's belongings & meets Drexil

3)Alabama & Clarence declare their love for each other

For people of a certain age....

Group therapy scene in The Breakfast Club.

When you read the title of this thread, what was the first film opening you thought of?

It was Star Wars, wasn’t it?

It was Pulp Fiction that 'inspired it' to make it but yep SW was amongst the first....

Basically every Indiana Jones movie except KotCS is on my list, also.

TTOD is a doozy.....

But I love the opening! It's hilarious! From Indy being poisoned, to him killing a guy by shishkabob and fire, it's awesome!

How could I forget this one. Perfectly set the scene for an entirely new kind of James Bond after the more comedic and wise-cracking versions that came before, this one being a cold-blooded killer.

I find it to be vastly underrated, actually.

I have a lot of love for it. It's probably too long and bloated, but it has great world building. You feel like you're entering into a specific place in history that I knew nothing about beforehand. And obviously DDL is amazing.

The opening scene from Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now (1973) probably changed film editing forever.

I’ll stick with the opening scenes of films, and try to choose some that haven’t been listed already. In no particular order:

1) The opening of John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978)

2) The opening of Friday The 13th (1980)

3) The opening of A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)

4) The attack on Conan’s village in the beginning of Conan The Barbarian (1982)

5) The opening scene in The Terminator (1984)

6) The scene where the cops try to arrest Trinity in The Matrix

7) Tackleberry’s surprise party at the beginning of Police Academy

8) The library scene in Ghostbusters (1984)

9) Indie’s introduction at the beginning of Raiders Of The Lost Ark

10) Annie sitting in the window singing “Maybe” in Annie (1982)

That’s all I can think of right now. I might post more later.

Just hearing Sarah Conner's narration while the camera pans over to that Terminator skull crush . Then the camera pans up to show a full metal endoskeleton looking over the horizon with T-1000's droning theme in the background. Those few seconds sends shivers down my spine to this day. T1's was just as good aswell especially the opening credits.

Blade's club scene just sets the tone. I particularly like that little flash edit when the Vampires notice theres a human amongst them. The whole soundtrack attached to that club scene was rave delight to be honest and was definitely one of my best experiences of a movie opening. I remember having a quick scan of my cinema and people were hyped themselves seemed like a music video until blades entrance. Great movie overall. aswell

As a snotty teen back then, this impressed the hell out of me at the cinema during it's premiere week.

The Dark Knight is the first movie that popped into my brain.

Am very fond of the 'club' scene in Collateral, one of TC's best performances in my book, also his bedside scene with Jason Robards in Magnolia was just brilliant. Two great Cruise performances of 'acting' rather than 'just' movie stardom.

The opening of The Dark Knight immediately comes to mind.

Strictly openings.

This opening tracking shot is brilliant.

I know people hated the sequels but come on....

This is just absolutely beautiful.

I'd add the footage from the opening of JAWS here but a believe it's a little nipply.
