The Guitar Players thread!

Guitar Hero is nothing like playing the guitar....besides strumming..but the buttons are nothing like frets..

I just aqquired a 30th Diamond Anniversary Starbringer Electric Guitar with practice amp, strapped case, medium Fender picks, and chrome tuner.

I'm getting lessons from my Uncle, who is a very talented msician, and also, my Cousin's Husband, whom is also very talented.

My New Year's Resolution is to learn how to play it like a real musician, and become like my relatives.

I wanna be able to play Stairway to Heaven by the end of the year....

....

Except the guitar solo, because thats for captain insane-os..plus I don't have an electric..

If you think Jimmy Page solos are hard, try playing some Yngwie Malmsteen solos. :trans:

I'd appreciate any help in trying to figure out how to play Vessel In Vain by Smog. This is what I got so far...

Near the start of the song...

im working on mastering the g major scale....woo. i've only been practicing guitar for a few days, but i think its coming along okay.

Put it in three-note-per-string patterns and learn it all over the neck!

You'll find that once you do, you'll have also learned A Dorian, B Phrygian, C lydian, D Mixolydian, E Minor, and F Locrian!

Modes are kool.

does this mean to play each note three times? im not to well versed in the lingo yet....which leads us to:

what the feck does that mean?

also, if anyone knows of any good sites for scales (especially blues/rock scales) and chords, let me know.

thanks!

Three-note-per-string is when you have one string, and you play three different notes on it.

Let's consider the Low E, the thickest string on the guitar: So, You have the root, G in this case, on the third fret or the low E string; the next note would be A on the 5th fret of the low E string, the major second; and the last note on that string is the B on the 7th fret, the minor third.

I can hook you up with some scales and stuff if you want.

okay, i see.

yeah, that'd be fantastic!

im trying to learn al this on my own, for the most part. im friends with a bunch of fantastic bands and amazing guitar players, so im looking to hit them up from time to time....but i've just started out right now, so...

But, really, probably the biggest secret to guitar playing is this: PRACTICE, PRACITCE, PRACTICE, PRACITCE, PRACTICE. . . and practice some more after that.

It's all practice.

I played the electric for a year but stopped, before that I played acoustic but only for little while. It got boring after a while :(

You have to play songs that aren't boring.

yeah, thats been my mantra thus far.

What kind of guitar did you get?

i was only playing guitar for 3 weeks when i joined my first band. i lied and said i could play and followed along to their songs. i later told them what i did and they didnt beleive me. i learned pretty fast i guess, but talk about a crash course.

Their songs must have been easy.

What kind of guitar did you get?

i've just been practicing on an old classical guitar thats been around my house for as long as i can remember. my friends told me it'll be god to start out on. i dont want to go spending hundreds of dollars on a guitar until i know this is something im gonna stick with.

I can play a bit, but I'm miles better on bass. My figuring was that there're too many guitar players in the world, and to make it as a guitarist, you need to be pretty spectacular (unless you're in a bland indie band, in which case a silly haircut will do), so I took up bass instead and it roolz.

I also tried my hand at the violin but never really got anywhere other than the standard cat-dying-a-death sound, so I gave that up after about a year of looking at it in the corner of my room and I took up the trumpet instead. I think I'm getting pretty good at that now.
