The Hills Have Eyes 2

The first one was great. Many suprises. Very memorable.

The sequel is beyond stupid. Never should have been made.

Hills Begins in Comics

Fox Atomic Comics and HarperCollins have done it again! Hot off the overwhelming success of 28 WEEKS LATER: THE AFTERMATH, the two have combined forces yet again to bring to life another movie franchise to the comic world. This time it's THE HILLS HAVE EYES, with the graphic novel comin' at ya called THE HILLS HAVE EYES: THE BEGINNING!

Based on the recent remake, and the remake's sequel, THE BEGINNING tells the story of the original families who refused to leave their small New Mexico town once the U.S. government began above-ground atomic testing. Spanning multiple generations, this dark tale reveals how these once good people slowly devolved into murderous mutants.

Nice! From the sounds of it, this really will be a beginning's tale, unlike the other BEGINNING, which played more like a remake than anything else. Written and drawn by comic veterns Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, this beast is lookin' mighty slick thus far, and if THE AFTERMATH was any indication of how hard this one's gonna rock... well, then it's gonna rock pretty damn hard!

And get ready to see our favorite New Mexico mutants turn into who they are today July 3rd, when it hits comic/book stores everywhere!

I like the sound of that comic. I loved the remake (even more than the original), but I never saw the recent sequel. I guess I shouldn't bother, since everyone said it sucked.

The Hills Have a Beginning

The next chapter in Fox's The Hills Have Eyes will not go theatrical. Instead, those irradiated inbreds of Alexandre Aja's 2006 film - and Fox Atomic's sequel - are committing their atrocities via the four-color world of graphic novels.

Riding the positive buzz of "28 Days Later: The Aftermath" (a g.n. tie-in released in anticipation of 28 Weeks Later), Fox Atomic Comics is eyeing a July 3rd street date for "The Hills Have Eyes: The Beginning." Fox sent us a peek at the cover art below.

Penned by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, with art by John Higgins, the graphic novel dips back in time before Big Bob got scorched and Papa Jupiter was skewered through his peeper with a pickaxe. It explains who the mutated family of "Hills" was before the atomic testing and how they degenerated into cannibals. You know, bed time reading for the kids...

Review: HHE The Beginning

In 2006, director Alexandre Aja gave us a ride like no other with his remake of Wes Craven’s 1978 ‘classic’ THE HILLS HAVE EYES. I say ‘classic’ because, while it came from Craven, it had plenty of issues and honestly, was one of the few flicks in recent years that actually warranted a remake. Aja’s HILLS HAVE EYES was a brutally grotesque adventure into horror and torture, giving us a cast of baddies like we haven’t seen before. Cannibalistic mutated freaks with a hunger for tourists and babies. Just thinking about them gives me the creeps.

It’s no surprise that a HILLS HAVE EYES 2 was cranked out a year later, and while it was nothing compared to Aja’s vision, it did give us more of those creepy freaks who call the atomic hills of New Mexico home. In comes Fox Atomic (who released part 2) with their brand new line of comic book movie tie-ins, as their latest comic adventure takes what we fell in love with in THE HILLS HAVE EYES, and attempts to show us where these freaks came from and why they’re the crazy bastards that we know today. Behold… THE HILLS HAVE EYES: THE BEGINNING!

The Beginning
HHE: THE BEGINNING, as the title suggests, really does take it from the beginning, when the sleepy little town was ordered to clear out by the U.S. government so they could test their atomic bombs. Least to say the townsfolk weren’t just going to leave, but after attacks from the U.S. soldiers after dark, they’re forced to leave… heading to the hills for refuge.

A few years (and atomic blasts) later, the government leaves and the townsfolk return to their sleepy little town, a town that hardly changed… except that it’s filled with radiation. The first round of townies seem unaffected, but when the town’s leader becomes pregnant and births a severely deformed baby, they begin to suspect something’s wrong. Human paranoia and unbiased hatred sets in against the deformed baby and mom, forcing them – and others born after – to the hills to live the rest of their days. After a few years, a community of mutated freaks is formed, all out for vengeance against the U.S. military that initially forced they out of town, and the ‘regular’ townsfolk who turned their backs and banished their own kind away like garbage.

In comes the mayhem, the nice little ‘tourist trap’ they have going, the onslaught of military interference and the mutated freaks being pissed off at the world and taking it out on everyone… except themselves. To me, this was the perfect sort of ‘beginning’ tale, as it not only told the story from the very beginning, but it brought it up into the events of the two films, then beyond and into the future. It also managed to do something that the films were unable to accomplish: evoked sympathy towards the mutants, and made me realize they weren’t that bad after all- just angry and misunderstood. Is that a good thing? Probably not in the movie contexts, but as the comic is told from the mutant point of view, it totally works here!

The artwork by John Higgins reminded me of the TALES FROM THE CRYPT comics of the 1960s, as they’re well drawn and normal on one end, and totally disgusting on the other. I wouldn’t want to have seen their world any other way! The end of the comic has a section of ‘Sketches’ from Higgins, as he talks about the step by step process of doing the artwork for a piece like this- pretty cool section, especially if you’re into art, comics, or both! The final section is on ‘Promotional Art’, featuring a few pieces of art from a variety of artists that were up for either the cover or the advertising. Like the realistic cover that was chosen, the selections of art here were quite impressive, and basically tied the whole BEGINNING together.

The Outcome
If you’re a fan of THE HILLS HAVE EYES, then THE BEGINNING is for you! With its stylistic artwork and killer storyline documenting them crazed cannibalistic mutants from… well, the very beginning, it gave a whole new dimension to the HILLS universe that the films just haven’t touched on. While I don’t think another movie would do the series any good, more entries like this in the future would definitely be welcome. While it wasn’t perfect, it accomplished what it was going for and in the end, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Lots of action, revenge, gory retribution and yes… even a bit of heart- add that all up, and you have yourselves one wild ride, and a comic worthy enough to be called THE BEGINNING.

Mini-Review:
I never saw the first "Hills" film, but that was not necessary when seeing the sequel. It gives you all the info you need in the introduction. This sequel is a lot like "Aliens." A group of soldiers arrive at a base camp to find everyone killed. Soon enough they meet the dangerous inhabitants and then are picked off one by one. This film just lacks the finesse and originality of "Aliens."

Pretty much from the opening scene you realize what you're getting into. You're treated to a disturbing sight of a woman tied to a bed giving birth to a mutant child. If that doesn't turn your stomach, nothing else in the film will. You also get to see a mutant rape a female soldier, break a man in half, and other assorted atrocities. But almost as bad as the gore is the annoying lineup of victims…er…characters. You have one soldier that talks with a lisp, another that is a war objector, and another that can't wait to get home to a toddler. They're the most annoying group of incompetent stereotypes you've ever seen. I was rooting for the mutants.

"The Hills Have Eyes 2 doesn't really have anything new or innovative to offer. You're probably better off re-watching the original or another horror film altogether.

Despite the poor quality of the film, there is a decent number of bonus features here. Kicking things off are the Deleted Scenes. One scene features more jokes with the lisping "Spitter". Another scene shows the soldiers debating leaving their comrades. But more interesting is the Alternate Ending. In it, the lone benevolent mutant turns on our survivors, thus leaving the film on a more ominous note. Next up is an amusing Gag Reel. It's your standard offering of flubbed lines and clowning around. "Mutant Attacks" highlights the story of the mutants, their makeup, personalities, and more. "Birth of a Graphic Novel" goes in-depth into the creation of the prequel graphic novel. Fans of comics and Jimmy Palmiotti will want to check it out. "Exploring the Hills: The Making of The Hills Have Eyes 2" is your standard "making of" video. Rounding things out is "Fox Movie Channel Presents: Life After Film School with Wes Craven". Three film students ask stupid questions of Wes Craven and he gives them appropriately sarcastic answers.

I'll most likely rent this even though I thought the first was horrible. But really what the heck. I might as well see it.

it sucks, we dont need any more reviews. if you want a shallow film with stupid stuff happening, go for this. i did like a couple of the deaths though... massive infection was pretty cool.
