i hate autotune and idiots like soulja boy

The lyrics are the problem. They be rhyming words with the exact same ****ing word, and don't even try to be satirical about it. Ludacris still has clever wordplay, Lil' Wayne does on occasion, which shocks me, but a lot of them are just blowing up too big too fast and they've gone too commercial.

Nothing like the past of hip hop. 80-90's were amazing. Since then its been ****ing awful.

i agree. not many trying to be creative anymore

That's the only hip-hop I listen to. Like I always say, just because you listen to rap doesn't mean that you CAN rap.

rhyme those wooords! (YEAA!!)

Thanks for pointing that out... i never realised it (esp in Souljaboy songs)

I can't post their videos due to them having uncensored cuss words, but check out Asheru, Immortal Technique, Mr. Lif, and Strange Fruit Project. They're some good modern acts that don't suck.

There's this hilarious blog I read that points out incredibly stupid rap lyrics. Sadly, I can't link to that website because its name is Snacks And S***. Not really safe for work (though easily Googleable).

That's what happens when you let 17-18 year olds write their own lyrics.

87-96 the best years in hip hop especially 90-94. When beats and lyrics meant something in hip hop not the garbage we get these days. Some underground MC's and producers still make some stuff worth still listening to though.

The only Hip Hop I really like this days is Lupe Fiasco.I'm a big fan of his lyrics.

i like Technique

Damn just heard Lupe fiasco new track 'What U Want' really good. Can't wait for his album to finally drop

Hip Hop has been downhill for at least the past 5 years. I mean true talent has been paved over by the likes of auto tune and horrible hype. It all in my opinion sounds the same, I'm not a big rap fan anyhow but still, the originality is lost. Rappers have become lazy and are to busy squandering their "well deserved" millions and not spending time on their craft. Honestly, people settle for the status quo because everyone else likes what's out there and they just want to fit in by liking what everyone else likes. This is just one of the many things wrong with the music industry.
100% agree. Rappers these days don't give a damn about their so called music. They just go to a hot producer lay some weak lyrics they made up on the spot on a track and leave the studio.

More like 17-18 year olds who have nothing orginal to rap about.

i find i prefer more story telling rap to bubble gum rap these days. not to say i dont like some mindless music, but i like my music to be about something too

It's all about the lyrical content for me. Storytelling is fine, but the content has to be about something I would actually like to listen to. Everything doesn't have to be some awe inspiring philosophical verse. It just has to have a clever way of working words and content that isn't shallow crap.

It's just the dumbing down of the industry. Beats are tired and lifeless, rhymes are...pathetic. The rappers themselves can't even speak clearly. However, the market doesn't demand anything mre challenging. In fact, the market does not support anything with a brain. This can be said for just about every form of music these days, as even many of the top blues and jazz acts are kind of uninspired. Country is atrocious these days and has been since Achey Breaky Heart was released.

Hip Hop is most noticeable because it relies so heavily on lyrical content and delivery. The fact that the writing is so bad, and the words delivered so poorly is inexcusable. I do think that part of the problem is that Hip Hop seems to thrive on ripping off whatever was cool six months ago, even more so than Rock. While Rock bands still respect Led Zep, The Beatles, Cheap Trick, Sabbath etc...the culture of Rap is so built on being current that no one would dare listen to Public Enemy or any of the quality acts from the past. It's a slash and burn mentality. So, these are morons living decent lives without the troubles or issues that previous generations before them, and we expect them to write quality songs?

I just shockingly heard two good songs in a row in the car earlier. Lil Wayne and Eminem's newest one, and Lupe Fiasco's newest one. Both had lyrics and hooks that were original as hell. They both appealed to me because they were pretty dark in tone. I admit I enjoy hip hop that's somewhat on the dark side.
