The Horror Thread - Part 1

There's not already an official thread for this... right?

I've been craving a thread to talk exclusively about horror movies... old classics, upcoming flicks, our favorites, our least favorites, etc. It's without a doubt my favorite genre.

What did we think of the Evil Dead remake? Are we excited for the Carrie remake? How was Mama? Is The Exorcist overrated? Is Michael Myers truly inhuman? Do we need a Scream 5? Let's go!

Once again, thanks for all the ghost movie recommendations for me guys. This is going to be a really spooky weekend!

I didn't get a chance to thank everyone for the Freddy make-up ideas! I liked the idea of using strips of bacon, but I told my girlfriend and she said, "Ew, you're going to smell all night." :funny: I was like, "Pssh, I'm gonna smell delicious."

I forgot all about this: The Devil's Carnival. I saw it last year around Halloween on Netflix and I thought it was quite good. It's actually a series of short stories in the Creepshow/Tales the Crypt style. I'm watching it again this year, make it a sort of Halloween tradition.

Synopsis said:
Three individuals have, somehow, found their way to a carnival, set in hell, and run by the devil. The trio is made up of a kleptomaniac, an obsessed father, and a gullible teenager, all of whom are doomed to repeat the very sins that delivered them to the carnival's doorsteps.

Quoting Thundarr from previous thread
I find the best horror movies (or movies in general) are the ones that are either truly ground breaking or at least set the standard by which all other similar films are judged.

The Conjuring didn't set the bar nor break any new ground. Yet what it did do, it did very well. So if someone's in the mood to see a really well done haunted house/posssession movie, I'll recomend it. I certainly think it did the job better than the remakes of either House On Haunted Hill or The Haunting.

I guess, yeah. Like I said, I liked The Conjuring well enough (wish I would have chosen Pacific Rim though and waited for the DVD of The Conjuring). Everything about it worked, but I just felt like I have seen it before (as in, every time I've seen a horror movie in a theater for the past 7 years).

As far as recent haunted house movies...I FAR prefer Lovely Molly. That gave a bit of a spin on the tired concept, and I think that the lead performance was very, very strong (especially considering that the actress had no previous film credits...that chick should get more work). Also, the recent The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh...while not the most exciting film ever...was (to me anyway) more of an interesting "haunted house" film.

Might be good but the home invasion movies are almost getting as old as the haunt movies. Mischief Night comes out Oct. 30th.

I'm praying that You're Next is as good as people are saying.

Looks like my big Halloween event this year will be a 100 YO birthday party for Peter Cushing in Pittsburgh. 2 days of 8 movies at a drive in. I'm pretty nerdy about Hammer so I can't wait for this.

Every October I watch horror movies for the entire month leading right up to Halloween. Also I tend to read horror literature, comics etc. I also enjoy listening to Halloween related music. This is a tradition that I've been doing for years, I just love the atmosphere of that time of the year.

Although I'm definitely an all year round horror fan, I do a lot of watching in September and October because I too love the season. Its my favorite time of year.

On that note, what ever happened to the great horror soundtracks of the past? Nothing ever seems to become very iconic anymore, even with a series like Saw that I know had a main theme and seven movies that featured that theme, but nobody remembers it. Some of my favorite horror soundtracks below.

Not to mention the great songs written by artists of the 70's and 80's for these.

I'm exactly the same way. I also go all out decorating my apartment for the holiday, carving pumkins, etc. I always buy a bunch of Halloween candy, just in case I get a bunch of trick 'r' treaters.

I don't do that entire month, but I definitely check out more horror movies as Halloween approaches. I also tend to have a Halloween movie marathon on Halloween night.

Just watched the new movie Errors of the Human Body. Good movie about a biologist whose son died from a rare form of cancer, so he dedicates his life to finding a cure and ends up in a body Horror/sci-fi film. It has a few plot similarities to Anti-Viral (which is a coincidence since they are both new films...and I'll add that the movies are very, very different otherwise). I can't but compare the two after seeing them within days of one another, and I prefer Anti-Viral (though I do like EotHB). It's on Netflix streaming and definitely worth a view.

Same here. :word:

I've already geared up early this year. I've read 17 H.P. Lovecraft stories in the past week, and watched Romero's entire Dead series.

As I write this, I've got Re-Animator paused on my TV. :yay:

For some reason, I'm more excited about Halloween this year than others. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty much my Christmas... but I've definitely caught the holiday spirit big time this year.

Oh man I know. I cannot wait. The only thing I miss is when I used to work at a pretty big haunted house in my area. It was so much fun, and really exhausting, but sadly, I haven't done it for the past 3 years due to getting into a bad situation regarding a former best friend and I, and the owner just happened to like my ex-friend better, and took his side on the matter so I haven't been back. I would love to but between said person and a few other people I never got along with, it just isn't worth it.

Even so, I cannot wait for October. As I said, I start really getting into the spirit in September. Hell, I got excited seeing a few Halloween cards already up at Wal-Mart a couple days ago.

My halloween tradition I've started is every year I get a horror movie tattoo in October. I was thinking of a chucky tattoo this year. Maybe something for the evil dead remake. Not sure yet what to get but that's my new tradition.

What? We really need to see that!!!

Just watched The Conspiracy, a found footage movie about a documentary crew that is doing a film about an Alex Jones type conspiracy theorist who disappears...so they start looking into his theories to see if they can explain what happened to him. I typically hate found footage movies, but this uses the concept very well. It wasn't full of scenes that felt like their only reason to exist was to explain the film to me in a hamfisted way. I think it helped that I'm pretty well versed in conspiracies...and the vast majority of what they talked about are not only "real" conspiracies (meaning, not necessarily true, but ones that are often discussed online by theorists), but some of them have been basically proven (like the Gulf of Tonkin incident). They were smart to avoid the lizard-man type stuff. There isn't much in the way of Horror...it's a slow build to an attempt to document the New World Order cabal. It kept me interested though (possibly due to me already being somewhat interested in the subject). It ended up being kind of a cross between Blair Witch Project, Eyes Wide Shut and an episode of the Alex Jones radio show.

Great idea although you may have second thoughts when you're in your 70's.

thanks. i've been looking for another anthology.

I always watch horror movies around Halloween. I had a tradition where I watch the original Halloween on Halloween. I've been doing that since 2006 or 2007. Unfortunately it was cancelled last year due to Hurricane Sandy. I didn't have power on Halloween last year, and it just felt like Halloween never really came.

I saw del Toro's The Devil's Backbone last night. Great film. I think one of the things I really dug about it was even if you removed the ghost entirely, the film still works great.

One of my favorite ghost movies!

Just watched The Fog and The Blob on Blu-ray, both are great! The Fog has a new interview with Jamie Lee Curtis which is very cool...
