The Hype Coloring Book

Thanks ComickChick, here's another one I finished yesterday. I used
the same method I used with Bat Woman, coloring flats then painting
in the details with the brush tool. I painted over the line art around the
mouth area because I didn't like the way lips were filled black. Other than
that, it's pretty straight-forward. I really tried to emphasize texture in this one.

Enjoy!

And here's thumbnail links to all of the ones I've
done so far, just to put them all in one place
since the TMNT one got left behind on the last page.

great, i'm going to be uploading some new lineart sometime this weekend. had a family emergency and an unexpected death, so my real life has to take over my internet life.

i had promised new lineart a couple days back, so i'm sorry. i'll try to make it up. any requests?

Do you have any Watchmen line art? Or maybe even Star Trek?

Jim Lee-ish? Whatever would give you that impression?
Lol, that's the first thing I noticed about this line art too.
There are some striking similarities:

That's probably what the "After Jim" part means in the signature.

Yes, that illustration is definitely supposed to be an homage to that classic Lee illustration.

Wow, I figured there would be more activity here on the weekend. Well anyways here's another one.
Description follows in spoiler tags:
This time I decided to color The Boy Wonder, Robin. When I was looking at this image I saw it could be interpreted a few different ways. Either he's suspended in air with the moon behind him, he's suspended in air with a spotlight being shown on him, or the circle in the background is simply an abstract shape. I decided to represent this image using the first interpretation of Robin in front of the moon because of the dramatic effect that the sharp back-lighting would create.

This image was actually one of the easiest to color, after the flat colors I didn't add much detail, just covered the entire figure with a dark bluish shadow and removed the shadow from around the edges of the figure to create the back-lighting effect. I had to add some highlights where they don't necessarily belong in a few places just to better define edges in the dark areas.

After that I drew in a big (really big) moon and rendered some clouds in the background and that's it. This was done in kind of the same style as my first TMNT image with sharp cut-out highlights and shadows. The next one I do I'll try a different style with brighter and more vibrant colors, most of the ones I've done so far have been kind of dark and gloomy. It's a style I like but I want to do something different.
As usual, here's a thumbnail. Click to view full or simply open the spoiler tags below.

Wow! all three are great picks and worthy to do. I'll have to work on all of them.

First of all, thanks Crook, bnightwing and CC for the compliments.

Now, I've already finished the Justice League pic I requested, of course I had a little head start. I Just painted in the details by hand like the ones before and threw a JLA logo in the background. The big challenge in this one was doing the reflections on the metallic parts of Wonder Woman's suit, which I think I handled OK. Again I apologize for the somewhat sloppy brush strokes, It's hard to keep things smooth with the mouse and I just don't have the patience to go back over everything with the smudge tool. Anyways I like the texture it creates so I'm not going to change how I do it. Enjoy!

Im really loving your colored renders. Very distinct and they way you are handling it it brings new life to the already amazing inks.

Well done!

Thanks, I'm glad you like them! I'm a big fan of your artwork, I see a lot of the stuff you post in the TDK fan art thread. I don't post there much any more because the stuff there is mostly manips which I've kind of gotten away from doing, but I still check in on the thread now and then and your stuff is always some of the best.

Anyways I think I'm going to try the Watchmen one next, unfortunately I'm not very familiar with Watchmen so I'll have to do some google image searches first to figure out what colors things should be.

sorry about my recent absense from the thread, college work has been taking over me,i'll try to do one soon, i have photoshop now too, so hopefully i will be able to expand more now. :)

This is very nice. I like the visibility of the brush strokes. The only problem I have with it is the texture added to wonder woman's shirt. It's static, where as in an actual piece of clothing, the texture would bend and stretch a bit, as well as change angles as it bends over things. there's a pretty neat tutorial for image displacement which works nicely for textures if you can understand the damned thing. What I tend to do with textures is just select areas where they'd be altered, and use the warp tool to bend them and distort them just a bit.

I love your work. Keep it up!

Thanks, Syncos. Unfortunately I use Photoshop 6 which doesn't have a warp tool and has a really crappy displacement feature, but I do know about how to make and use displacement maps. In fact, I used them in this image to apply texture to Batman's cowl and I've already used them a lot on the Watchmen line art I'm coloring right now. I guess I just forgot to do it for Wonder Woman's shirt, it was the last thing I did on this one and I was in a hurry to get it done. Man, that's all I can see when I look at it now. Yuck!

OMG a REVIVE!

i forgot about this, i shall cetainly do one, i have Photoshop CS3 now too so hopefully i have improved furthur, although it has been so long i proberly have lost all skill at colouring.

glad you like the revival, so now let's see some coloring people!

i spent ages on The Punisher but i didnt save, really pissed off, i know im an idiot, it's because i kept it open while doing some work in photoshop so i ignored the save reminder when i closed thenrealised that was for the punisher.

i shall try the thing instead now, i have finished college for christmas so i have loads of spare time to do it so should be up soon :D

Dang that sucks about the coloring you were working on. i would've liked to have seen it

i hope a lot of people try to color the Thing. I thought it would be good one for people to practice textures and whatnot.

and also, because Franklin Richards nominated this thread in the Hype Awards :)
