Hey all, I've noticed a number of threads recently that pertain to the military and thought it would be a good idea to have one general thread for it.

Now, the purpose of this thread isn't to debate about the merits of the Iraq War, or any other war, but more for people that used to be in the military, are still in the military, or are thinking about going in. It can be a place to share experiences and answer any questions posters might have.

To start it off, I enlisted in the US Army a week ago. I don't ship out for basic until Aug. 23. My basic training is at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and my 19 week AIT training is in Ft. Huachuca, AZ. My MOS is Military Intelligence Analyst.

One question I do have is during my AIT, do I live in normal enlisted housing, or am I still in a Bay?

My cousin is in the Marines, and a great friend is in the Air Force. God bless 'em :yay:

^ Very cool. My brother in law was a Captain in the Marines, and my cousin is currently in the Navy. He's the lucky one since he was stationed in Hawaii for two years, and is now stationed in London.

Good Luck, Soldier.

My dad was in 'Nam for a while, a Tank Commander. My grandpa served in WWII I believe.

My brother-in-law just retired from the Navy after 20 years of service. Both my grandfathers were in WWII. Several of my friends are officers (Army & Marines). My dad was in reserves during the Korean war. I'm an anarchist who never served a day in his life. :ninja:

I'd rather join the police than the military. Police is actually what I'm looking into quite seriously at the moment.

Plymouth is pretty much one big naval base, so pretty much everyone I know has a family member out fighting or just come back. Shame really.

My great-uncle was a tank commander in WWII. It's supposed to be one hell of a job and somethign I thought about, but decided to go a different route.

My dad had fun driving the tank through the forests, just bringing down trees, no-sweat.

We did go see "We Were Soldiers," and he had to leave the theater for a minute. He never has, and probably never will, talk to me about Vietnam.

Yeah, I have an uncle that was in Vietnam but never talks about it. I know he was actually captured and on the way to the POW camp, there was an assault and he escaped. It's one of those things that sounds really cool, and I'd like to actually hear the story, but I know better than to ever ask him.

I do like listening to my grandfather tell me some of his stories about serving in WWII though.

Both of my grandfathers were in the navy during WWII.
My father works at the shipyard where they make the U.S. Aircraft Carriers.

I remember when I was a little kid and I saw an aircraft carrier. Those things are absolutely amazing in real life. Of course, the fact that I was obsessed with the movie Top Gun at the time probably also amped up my awe.

My ex-gf Is in the Army and is in AIT right now. I believe she is still in the bay style living quarters. As for me I am active duty Air Force. Stationed in Minot, ND aka hell frozen over. The other day it was negative 47 with windchill...I'm originally from Florida.

p.s.
Served in Iraq April-September 2005

Interseting and thanks for the info. I'm glad to hear you made it back safely. By any chance do you know what MOS is your ex-gf training for?

Yes, she is training to be a combat medic and I believe her school is in San Antonio, TX.

I was in the military. Went in at the age of 18, two months after i graduated from HS.

Did my hellish bootcamp at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Also did my A.I.T there too.

My MOS was '93 Foxtrott'.

Got shipped to Bamburg, Germany, where i did my time.

I was part of the 3rd Infantry division. My unit is currently in Iraq.

What part of Iraq is your unit at now? I did my rotation over at Ali AB, Iarq.

Celldog is coming for you. :(

You really do want the handcuffs and night stick that bad huh? :ninja:

I've had the chance to go on a day-cruise a few times.
It's scary s*** up top.

What are you doing now?

Well i got out with a Medical Discharge due to Kidney failure while stationed in Germany.

Right now, i'm in college earning my degree, under the Veterans Affairs:Chapter 31 program.

Not sure exactly where they were, i got out before they were shipped out...

...god, i miss my 'broken tv' patch.:cwink:

Its that or paramedic, and I can't even watch an autopsy on TV so I don't think I'd do so well. They're crying out for female officers here, so it won't be too hard. All I gotta do is make sure I can pass the fitness test. Shouldn't be too hard.

Handcuffs will come in handy though I'm sure...

Celldog is coming for you. :(

Haha! He'll be sorry if he does. You don't have to be in the military to get in awesome shape, learn self-discipline, learn how to handle guns and whoop ass and accumulate some knowledge of explosives. :ninja:

Did your kidney give out on you due to natural causes, or is there more to the story? At any rate, good on ya for earning your degree. That's one cause I don't mind my tax dollars going to; helping soldiers get their lives back after they've served.

Actually the cause is currently unknown. There's a disease that infects the Kidneys known as FSGS (Focal Segmental GlomeruloSclerosis); that was the underlying diagnosis, but the cause of the disease itself is unknown. Anybody can get it, and because the casue is unknown, the disease could possible infect the transplanted Kidney that i presently have with no apparent warning signs.

One day i was just fine, then the next day i woke up 70 pounds heavier, full of fluid, known as Edema. Imagine going to bed weighting 160lbs, and waking up the next morning and your 230lbs..i looked like the 'Stay Puff Marshmellow man' from 'Ghostbusters'..................

Yeah, that would be some scary sh1t to wake up to, no doubt about it. Glad you survived and went on to live a full life. Hope it stays that way for you.
