so what do you all think of marvels most recent hero so far????

mind you I don't know that I'd really call him a hero but I think I like the character so far I mean come on he asked out the woman he saved on the first page and he's not beyond taking money from the villians who's asses he kicks he basicly makes him the kind of hero I'd probly end up being cause I'm sorry but being the good guy is all well and good but ya need the money no matter what

I enjoyed the first issue quite a bit. Here is a repost of what I wrote on the B/T:

IRREDEEMABLE ANT-MAN #1: The cover is perfectly amusing, not only from Ant-Man's line about wallets, but the tagger about him being an "unlikeable" hero. Good LORD, after all of the heaped upon piles of cosmic self-importance that CIVIL WAR has much of the universe on, one needs a good title like this that doesn't take itself 100% seriously as a breath of fresh air. As one Kirkman title dies (MTU), another is born, and this is probably the only book that even was willing to aknowledge continuity from MTU due to the same writer on it (as well as the ENEMY OF THE STATE Wolvie tale). It stars two low level SHIELD agents Chris McCarthy and Eric O'Grady as well as focuses on the lives of SHIELD grunts, from taking crap from higher-up agents to get in words for promotions to poker to X-BOX's in their rooms (seriously, how many Marvel comics within the past month have mentioned an X-Box? Is Microsoft paying Marvel for that?), or even debating if Nick Fury was real. Chris is the guy who always wanted to be a superhero, plays by the book and has the confidence to attract girls. Eric is the underachiever who is terrible with woman and makes snap decisions, most of them wrong. They bungle an assignment and Chris steals a prototype Ant-Man suit, but Eric lies about it to cover his tracks and try to get in on his girl. Turns out 6 months later, Ant-Man will be fighting crime and dating his rescued damsels...and it's Eric? Kirkman obviously wrote Chris as the guy you'd expect to become the next Ant-Man, but something may happen and Eric will probably get the mantle for good. But while this issue was amusing and a good start, Kirkman has to be careful to not make Ant-Man SO "irredeemable" that he turns off the audience. I mean, Iron Man's become a *****e and his main title's hardly in the Top 25. Hester's art is a breath of fresh air for people wary of MTU and fits the tone of the title. The logo works and I look foward to some strong stuff from this title. Good to know that some titles in Marvel still have that knack.

I must say, I'm actually sorta glad...
Eric was the one who ended up as Ant-Man. He seemed to be the guy with more personality, and the better personality. Who doesn't love flawed heroes, right? And I probably love the semi-comedic ones the best.

I do agree with Dread that they have to be careful not to turn him into a *****e (I thought the move on Chris' girlfriend pretty low, and really the only majorly unlikable thing about Eric in the issue), but if they can keep him at the level of ineptitude he was at for most of the first issue, it should be pretty damn good.

And, honestly, I'd be pretty interested seeing how Eric involves into a more...mature person in later issues. Although I'm sure that's quite a ways off.

Meh. I would have prefered Pym be the main focus (or even a Lang revival of some sort) as i found neither lead character interesting or compelling...or even likeable.

I also doubt Pym would just give his technology away to SHIELD like that.

And that costume flat out sucks imo. (note to Marvel: You're NEVER going to improve on Jack Kirby's designs, so stop trying. You're embarassing yourselves)...

I know Kirkman is "teh kewl" and all, but i prefer the classics.

Pass.

I'm really giving this book a solid chance because I love Kirkman's writing... been with him since Invincible #1, just recently discovered The Walking Dead in TPB format (read the first 4 trades in one sitting... really riviting stuff), and I appear to be in the minority as one who enjoyed his entire MTU run (though the art sucked the last 6 issues :cmad: )

And Kirkman seems to be one of three writers at Marvel that uses continuity as a strength and not a hinderance (Slott & Brubaker being the other two) when it comes to plotting out their tales... so he gets a big thumbs up from me for that alone.

And while I love the old Ant-Man costume, I'm digging the current look. :word:

:yay:

I think Eric and Chris are Ant-Man.

But yes I loved the first issue so much better than Kirkman's last MTU arc and I just love Phil Hester on any book - his art is perfect for this issue. I love the design of the suit (nothing against what has gone before). I like seeing Hank Pym in this; his level in this and Beyond! is much more where I like to see him so works for me.

I liked it...I'll stay on for a while.

I like the way we get to see the innder workings of SHIELD from a lower level.

Nick Fury is a Myth.....LOL

I hope Eric and Chris are Ant man together.Beacuse if not i can see Eric pulling a real A*hole move to get the suit from chris.I'm curious to see how much of an ass Kirkman is going to make Eric .I also liked seeing the inside workings of S.H.E.I.L.D. from the view of the lowest level agents.

So Far Eric is quite an ass....****ing him over with Veronica like that.

having read the solicit for issue 3, my prediction is that Eric swipes the suit just to survive the attack on the Helicarrier (Wolverine:Enemy of the State); basically running while all of his friends are killed. outside of him lying to Veronica, Eric doesn't strike me as a malicious individual. he's just extremely shallow, insensitive, and selfish. Chris did lie to him about dating Veronica and knew that Eric had approached her. and Veronica is pretty stupid (not to mention paranoid) to believe that Chris is cheating on her, as well.

anyways, i could care less about how well it's selling but i would love for this title to stick around. it was a fun read; something i've been missing since before Disassembled and Civil War. if you want more heroes killing heroes, check out the rest of the marvel universe. meanwhile, Ant-Man will play X-Box and try to get dinner dates out of heroing.

P.S. to the people who hate his costume, what does it matter? would you really want this deuchebag in classic kirby's? he's supposed to be goofy; not iconic.

serves them both right for laughing at Eric behind his back. and it seems to be a really shallow relationship. all they do is have sex; couldn't hold a conversation for more than a few minutes.

fair enough. but i'm bored to death of Pym's sob story. and talk about unlikable. he and Eric O'Grady are on equal footing; morally-speaking. and if you find Pym's insecurity and sanity issues compelling, then it shouldn't be that hard to find something to like about the new Ant-Man. he's just as much of a screwup. you'll have plenty of opportunities to see Pym hog the spotlight. he's a major player in Beyond and i predict he'll be part of the new McDuffie-written Fantastic Four. meanwhile, i'll just worry about getting to know a brand new character; supporting two great creators like Kirkman and Hester.

for starters, he hasn't given anything away. two agents stole the armor. secondly, he was holding tryouts for the position. these were supposed to be the best of the best wearing the costume. thirdly, Pym's a scientist. creating stuff like this is what he does/has always done. and, lastly, he has been working with SHIELD throughout Civil War. he helped create that Thor Clone that killed Bill Foster. he attempted to capture Captain America. you don't honestly think he's above selling stealth-armor to SHIELD do you?

Yeah, like I said in the B/T thread I really liked it. I've never read any SHIELD series before and it's cool to see some of them as full-fleshed characters once in a while when they've so often been expendable cannon fodder and sinister stooges in recent memory.

I really dug this book. Now of all times we see alot of S.H.I.E.L.D. in every book. But S.H.I.E.L.D. has never been shown like this. Its almost like a "Day in the life of" type of thing. I love it. A soap opera if you will.

To me it felt more like a S.H.E.I.L.D. sitcom.

like I said at the begining this comic really says something to me of course I tend to latch on to the misfit characters like Deadpool and Deathlock which is why I was happy to see him in Beyond but yeah so far this comic has me hooked with the first issue it's funny and I think that Chris has something on Eric and thats why Eric is going on the date for him at the end of the first issue cause remember Chris doesn't really know how to get the Armor off thats why he shrunk down in the first place he might have made Eric feel bad so now Eric's being his public face for him or something like that again another one of his Irredeemable characteristics

We all know that it won't last, so enjoy it while you can. Marvel has no sense of legacy, and Pym will be Ant-Man again before you know it.

I hope we get at least 25 issues of this.:(

It was fun, I enjoyed it, but it really lacked the "oomph" I was expecting

well, knowing Kirky, he's got some major stuff planned that will come together later

Bought it but i havent read it yet. Kirkman never seems to let down when doing new characters

Really? You're a big fan of Freedom Ring then, I take it? :oldrazz:

Freedom Ring, while seemingly a bit forced (maybe because Kirkman knew he only had a few issues to develop his character), was ok... if the art hadn't seemed like it was drawn by 5th graders, his story might have seemed a lot more palatable, if not down right enjoyable.

 :csad:

did you try the League of Losers arc on MTU? It's worth it, give it a try
