imo....the worst thing about what happened here is that M. Night didn't just screw up "one of his own movies." No, he tarnished the name of someone else's property/story ( and a highly popular and critically acclaimed one ).

If this movie had been an original one that M. Night created himself, I guess I wouldn't be as mad or disappointed.

But...no.....he took a popular franchise that already had a loyal following, tried to "adapt" it, but failed miserably due to laziness, incompetence, ego, or some combination of the three.

I mean.....I have never seen a movie so universally panned........

Thats the worst part. The TV show has a huge fanbase.

Sorry about that Project862006. Credit goes to you then.

Casting choice for Jet- perfect.

Got any more ideas for the rest of the cast for the first movie?

i think ken watanabe would be a better zhao than russell wong

might get flamed for this but i think jackie chan would've made a good iroh, maybe not in size but in personality.

well he cant be worse than shaun toub.

anyway, speaking of getting flamed i think Dustin Hoffman would have been a great Iroh

we all know he is a terrific actor but i just noticed he even looks a bit like Iroh

possibly but i remembered wong has that great a**hole vibe which is good for zhao and is very charasmatic

well i have never seen him act so...

If the cartoon series continues to be popular, Paramount will reboot this in 10 years. By then audiences will have forgotten this movie even existed.

If they did a reboot it would probably be based on Legend of Korra. There's really not enough that they can do to differentiate a reboot from TLA other than just trying harder. I mean, how are they going to show that it's more accurate to the show? "Oh look, Aang has a solid blue arrow on his head instead of that other design!" isn't exactly the kind of thing that would get my butt over to a theater. Personally, I am 100% positive that they will not attempt to do this movie over again. Avatar just plain isn't popular enough, and the only way to make a reboot that doesn't feel like a remake is to wildly diverge from the show's story since the show and TLA covered so much of the same ground.

You know what would be a whole lot worse that watching TLA again? Watching another 100 million dollars being dumped into the same story, just to convey the same plot details so that they can set up for the same sequel.

So any word on the sequel? (It could happen but hopefully without M. Night's participation.) It made money but it was still not the type of money you'd expect from a movie like this.

when a movie like this is a huge success then they start talking about the sequel very fast.weeks

i think they will whait until the DVD and BR.

its also hard to say if the general public liked it. a lot of movies underperformed this year. so is it a bad summer or just movies that were not for the general public?

I agree that Paramount is probably waiting for the DVD / BR to see whether or not this franchise is worth further investing in. Also, it's yet to open in quite a few international territories. One thing's for sure, if Paramount wants people to buy the DVD they had better give them a much more compelling reason to than just a few trailers and a commentary track. I'm talking a longer, improved cut of the film that restores the lost 25 minutes and hopefully gets rid of some of the redundant exposition (especially Katara's narration). That's something I would pay to have a look at. They shouldn't even bother with the theatrical cut because if the extended cut is available, no-one will want the theatrical version anyway.

I don't care if it makes enough to warrant a sequel, it should be destroyed like any abomination. Destroyed and forgotten.

Avatar just plain isn't popular enough

This movie has so far grossed $128.2 million domestically and almost everyone hated it. Can you imagine if people had liked it? $200 million for sure! So, yes, there IS an audience for this franchise.

I can't believe this is still an ongoing debate. The last Airbender was a cutesy little kids cartoon show that was adapted for film. What exactly were ppl expecting?

Exactly if this film made almost 130 million domestically with terrible reviews and bad word of mouth against films like Twilight:Eclipse/Inception/Toy Story 3/

then yes this film had a gigantic audience

We were expecting something grand and epic in scope, something with good acting, good humour, highly emotional undertones, and amazing action. Not to mention something NOT under 2 hours long.

Instead what we got was a lazy attempt with choppy editing, terrible acting, rushed plot points, wrong name pronounciations, and absolutely no humour and very little emotional undertone, if any at all.

Explain to me, kids show or not, where's the justice?

3D ticket prices are the only reason that it has made that much. Still the movie would have been over 100mil regardless, which shows that there was an audience. If the movie wasn't directed by M-Night I'm sure it would have made even more.

Yes, 3D helped but it's still good money considering everyone hated it. Basically, people went and saw it then warned their friends and family about how much it sucked. Had it been good, the word of mouth would have encouraged people to check it out and it would have been a hit.

Did you even watch the cartoon?
