Noomi Rapace, the girl with the dragon tattoo, will have a vampire bite

October 13, 2010 | 3:23 pm

EXCLUSIVE: Swedish actress Noomi Rapace has been on a hot streak since her Swedish-language "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" became an art-house hit in the U.S. Now she's signing for a new role in an intriguing genre.

Rapace is set to come aboard the "The Last Voyage of Demeter," about the ill-fated journey of Dracula's coffin from Transylvania to England, according to sources familiar with the project.

Rapace is expected to play a stowaway on the boat, which according to legend arrived at its port with no survivors, prompting speculation that the vampire corpse made a little mayhem. Ben Kingsley is also coming aboard the ship, the sources said, while a lead actor is in the process of being cast.

The film has heat behind it: it's being directed by Oscar-winner Stefan Ruzowitzky ("The Counterfeiters") and produced by the team behind "Shutter Island" at Phoenix Pictures; the movie is expected to contain some of the literary genre qualities that characterized "Shutter."

With a new role in "Sherlock Holmes 2" and discussions on "Mission: Impossible 4" and the "Alien" prequel, Rapace has already capitalized on her popularity from "Dragon Tattoo" and the two films that followed in the adaptation of Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy.

"Demeter," however, would mark Rapace's first English-language genre movie, and also put her back in something of the scrappy loner role that she popularized as Lisbeth Salander. And if she decided to really go tough, she probably wouldn't even need to change her outfit.

If they do it well, this could be really good. I'm particularly excited about the Shutter Island production team being involved.

Could have sworn there was already a thread for this.

Nevertheless this sounds pretty awesome. Like Alien, but instead of a Xenomorph its Dracula. The few scenes it got in Coppola's IIRC were the best part of the movie IMO.

Wow, a Dracula movie that just might be decent! Sign me up.

At first I thought this was for the Dracula film Argento is supposedly making.

Ha. I had the idea for this film years ago. Oh well.

I really hope they faithfully adapt Dracula's appearance from the book. But color me interesting.

Oh, and I want Rapace for Catwoman.

'Eclipse' Helmer David Slade Boards Vampire Horror Pic 'Last Voyage of the Demeter' (Exclusive)
9:25 PM 2/11/2011 by Borys Kit

BERLIN -- The Last Voyage of the Demeter may be getting ready to finally set sail.

David Slade, who directed vampires in 30 Days of Night and Twilight Saga: Eclipse, is in talks to tackle the blood-sucking genre again with Phoenix Pictures' long-in-the-works period horror movie.

The lead role is not cast but Ben Kingsley and Noomi Rapace are attached to co-star. Phoenix is in active talks with actors for the lead role.

Producing Demeter are Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer and Bradley Fischer, who have made habit of incubating and sticking with projects for lengthy periods. (Phoenix took almost as long to get Oscar best picture contender Black Swan made.)

Demeter was the name of the ship that transported Dracula from Transylvania to London in Bram Stoker's classic tale. In that novel, it washes up on the shores of England, tattered and broken, with one raving mad survivor.

Written a decade ago by Bragi Schut, the script places the voyage center stage in a tale that is reminiscent of the first movie in the Alien franchise, in which a crew is slaughtered one-by-one by a mysterious passenger.

The project has over the years attracted such directors as Robert Schwentke and Marcus Nispel. Stefan Ruzowitzky was on board but last month decided to work on the just-announced drama Blackbird, which is to star Eric Bana and Oliva Wilde.

Demeter hasn't left port just yet, however. The project is still in the midst of securing financing, although the attachment of Slade, riding high on Eclipse's near-$700 million in worldwide boxoffice, should go a ways to get there. However, by the time the funds are secured, the actors could change. The in-demand Rapace, for example, already has Fox's Prometheus penciled in for part of the year.

Slade is repped by WME and Anonymous Content.

Between Slade and Rapace I hope this gets made soon. Unlike the awful sounding Harker, this sounds like a unique concept and could be a lot of fun. A victorian/vampiric Alien. I hope.

SCOOP: Jude Law In Talks For Lead Role In The Last Voyage of the Demeter
Submitted by Rich Johnston on February 14, 2011 – 3:16 pm

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is an movie currently seeking financing, planned to be directed by David Slade, and currently roaring round the trades.

It’s based on one segment of the Bram Stoker Dracula story, the ship that takes the count from Transylvania to Whitby, England. While torturing and murdering the crew. The script is written by Bragi Schut and produced by Phoenix Pictures, and centres on reports left in the captain’s log during the doomed journey. The Dracula character is described in a manner to the xenomorph in Alien.

Ben Kingsley and Noomi Rapace are attached, but Hollywood sources tell Bleeding Cool that the producers are currently in discussion with British actor Jude Law for a lead role. Whether that’s a crewman, or something… darker, we don’t yet know.

But Law does often look a tad pasty, doesn’t he?

Neil Marshall Sails On The "Demeter"

By Garth Franklin Friday May 11th 2012 09:57PM
After being stuck for many years in development, it looks like "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" will finally be sailing forward as Neil Marshall ("The Descent") is in talks to direct the project for Millennium Films reports Heat Vision.
Based on a chapter in Bram Stoker's classic novel "Dracula", the story describes the disturbing voyage taken by the vampire count to England on a merchant vessel shipping cargo from Transylvania to London.
Stoker tells the story via the captain's log of the voyage, which begins in Bulgaria and becomes increasingly disjointed as members of the crew disappear as Dracula feeds on them to sustain himself.
The ship eventually crashes on the rocks at Whitby with the only soul on board the dead captain who has been lashed to the steering wheel.
Bragi Schut ("Season of the Witch") penned the script a decade ago which has had the likes of David Slade ("30 Days of Night"), Marcus Nispel ("Friday the 13th"), Robert Schwentke ("Flightplan") and Stefan Ruzowitzky ("The Counterfeiters") previously attached as directors. Ben Kingsley and Noomi Rapace were linked as possible stars last year.
Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer and Bradley Fischer will produce. The project was previously setup at Phoenix Pictures, but the move to Millennium has given it a better chance of going forward.

All of a sudden I'm much more interested. Although I think no matter how talented Marshall is, nothing will match the utter creepiness, dread and fear the novel created.

The director:
The screenwriter: :down

And as I said in my last post, here's hoping they stick closely to Dracula's physical description.

Sounds very intreresting! If there was any other director I would have wanted them to not do so much action and instead focus on the chilling and clastrophobic aspect of the ship, but Marshal is kicka$$ with action so now they can do whatever they like, I wont complain :D

This guy has the most hilariously large forehead I've every seen. I swear to God it's Photoshopped.

Agreed. Let's hope there have been rewrites since it was originally written.

Viggo Mortensen Offered Lead In THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER

Some interesting news landed on our doorstep for Millenium Films’ The Last Voyage of the Demeter, the ex-Summit/Sony Screen Gems project that’s been in development hell since 2004. Movement was confirmed back in May when Dog Soldiers, Doomsday and The Descent‘s Neil Marshall was attached to direct. Now we’ve got more from the ship that carried Dracula’s coffin from Transylvania to England.
Although yet to be confirmed, we’re told Ben Kingsley is still attached to play the film’s Captain. In addition, Viggo Mortensen (A History of Violence, The Road, The Lord of the Rings) has been offered the lead role of “Henry Clemens,” a source exclusively reveals to Bloody. There’s no real word on Noomi Rapace, coming off Prometheus, other than she “may” still be starring as “Anna Billington.” I can only guess it comes down to scheduling, especially with a movie that’s been stuck ashore for nearly a decade.
The latest draft was written by Lowell Cauffiel and is said to place the voyage center stage in a tale that is reminiscent of the first movie in the Alien franchise, in which a crew is slaughtered one-by-one by a mysterious passenger.

Sounds good so far, I'm hoping for the best. I just hope the studio doesn't dumb down the title to something like "Demeter".

Noomi has a thing for travelling with ships named after characters from greek mythology :oldrazz:
And the journey never ends good.

Still think this sounds like a great idea (thought it'd make a good movie ever since I read the book 15 or so years ago). I hope it gets made. Neil Marshall is a great choice.

It'd be funny to see Noomi in that role, because it obviously sounds very Alien-esque and she was in the Alien prequel. I hope she does a drama in Hollywood that can knock people's socks off, but I'm sure this movie will be all the better if she and Viggo are in it.

Mortenson and Marshall? Lord, this is too good to be true.

It'd be even better if Mortensen was playing Dracula :awesome:.
