I feel it needs to be said... Every day a new thread is made saying some property should be made and you know what the response always is? "Yeah that'd be cool if done right" You know what done right means? It means retooling it so it works in today's audiences, but here's my point, why bother taking some other property, when you could just make something inspired by it, and it'll come out better in the first place. Personally I don't want see more regurtitated ideas, I want more originality... So here's a thread saying good bye to sequals, remakes, adaptations, etc WHo's with me!?

No. Sequels can be great, and remakes can surpass the original if "done right" ala Texas Chainsaw Massacre...besides, as long as people go to these movies, which they always will, hollywood will keep making them...this thread is useless nonsense.

Moderation. I don't wish to see sequels, remakes and adapts abandoned forever, just continue in moderation.

Gabe... Your annoying... Simply put... You post these ridiculous post as if your opinion is the end-all-be-all of everything, however the posts in question are never anything more than an angry fanboy's ranting...

However I'll address your post... Sequels can be great, true... But so can anything, and most of hte itme Sequels are simply fun, not great. Let me take the Die Hard series for example, all of the sequels(Even the dreadful part 2) are fun, some more fun than others, but none of them ever match the first one? Why? Because the story should of ended at one. The story was so perfect, the action, great... But the minute a sequal was made, it simply became John McClane on another adventure... Don't get me wrong I love having the sequels as a fan... But a sequel is more or less a desert, something enjoy every now and again. Sometimes you get a sequel that surpasses the original, most of the time because the original set the bar far too low ala Spider-Man 2, in which the character is furthered. But again this is rare... And then let say you get a decent sequel, it's rarely possible to get a good movie after that. Spidey 3, X-Men Last Stand, Terminator 3, etc... Why? Because there are far too many hands in the frickin pot, the minute you make an adaptation, sequel, your hands are tied.... Your answering to 100 frickin people...

So again... Gabe had you read my post and not posted one of your patented "I'm right but with no actual reason behind it" posts, you'd see that what I was getting at, is that by going a route which simply is inspired by these movies you want remade, etc... Film-makers are given more freedom to express themselves thus giving us better movie experiences.

Of course... However, we're coming off a summer which is strickly sequals, remakes, and adaptations... I wouldn't mind taking a break for a little bit... I mean I can't wait for The Dark Knight, however I hope to see more original fare.

Problem is when you look at the most successful films of all-time, and aside from a few like Titanic, ET and Finding Nemo, they are all sequels/adaptions...

So true... The problem is a movie ticket now a days can cost up to $10 a pop and it's sometimes rather hard trying to sell something original and new to the people :(

Sorry, but that's funny coming from you who has their own thread for supposed "intelligent" discussion of film, as if the other million threads aren't. Anyway, some remakes are ok, but the majority are quite bad and not worth it. So the batting average for them is quite low. I say remakes the bad or mediocre movies, leave the good ones alone. If you remake a great film and it turns out to be better, the remake is only good BECAUSE of the older film, so its pointless.

I agree. Stop remaking good films. But sequels are fine as long as they keep their fun/entertaining/really good factor(Godfather III, Matrix III, Spider-Man III come to mind). I agree on the originality part. It's better to make a film inspired by another instead of just remakin' it.

zing.

I'm conflicted with this.

I do agree that Hollywood needs to stop churning out sequels and remakes. It has just become an oversaturated trend. I do believe in stop making remakes to very good films, however, I would like to see remakes of lesser known movies (rarely), albeit if the idea of the original could warrant a remake. Remakes are also great if in the craft of a great director (Scorsese/The Departed or Spielberg/War of the Worlds).

In terms of sequels, I agree with Kevin Roegele that we should have moderation with it. Sequels were never really bad things before Hollywood made the inevitable "trilogy" rule for every blockbuster. Films like Aliens or The Godfather Part II (etc.) are very worthy examples of how great a sequel can be, and because of films like these, all sequel ideas shouldn't be left in the dust. I am also kinda fond of the sequel idea only if the original spawns the idea of a potential, profitable, quality franchise. However, when sequels are made solely to make some coin/milk the franchise or just to test out the "trilogy" idea, they shouldn't be made. Sequels like Son of the Mask or Evan Almighty shouldn't be made, solely because they are unnecessary and have no reason to exist after the conclusion of it's predecessor.

I love how you say I state my opinion as fact then make broad statements about how none of the sequels you mentioned surpass the originals, as if your opinion on it was fact. I would say that Die Hard With A Vengance is 10 times the movie the first Die Hard was, Spidey 3 was the best of the trilogy, and T3, while not great, is not the s**tfest everyone makes it out to be.

And once again, the entire argument is pointelss. Some film makers choose to do remakes, so totally abolishing them would actually take away film maker freedom. And what makes a better movie experience is all subjective. I'm sure that for every person who despises remakes and sequels such as yourself, there is another who loves them, and these movies mostly have the BO to back it up. And the "doing a movie inspired by the one you want to remake" path ends just as badly as remakes most of the time, do I really have to mention Van Helsing?

Please don't I just had eggs.
