The Matrix Resurrections

The movie itself works fine, I don't think it's a bad movie. But knowing what came before, the amount of time that has passed... it shouldn't be this mediocre.

I feel showing scenes from the superior original was a mistake they should have showed as a video game as they were suggesting probably would have been best its not like WB has a video game studio :whatever:

Seeing the original movie playing in the background just shows how awful this was ill eventually watch it again to see if its easier to stomach but can't be in a bad mood its Christmas eve after all lol

I'm a third of the way through. Quite frankly so far, I think this movie flat out blows. There's some neat ideas here and there, but the execution sucks. This script needs multiple redrafts.
Having now finished the movie, it never got better. If anything it got worse as the film went along. I thought the pitch montage sequence was the only thing interesting, but the movie doesn't really delve into that beyond that sequence, and kind of becomes the thing it's commenting on. Which is probably the film's biggest issue, in that there are two widely different stories being told, and they don't work cohesively. This needed to be two separate films not staring the same characters.

Also can someone tally up how many flashbacks there were? It was annoying.

I actually kind of resent this movie because we’e have likely gotten John Wick 4 by now if Keanu wasnt occupied making this one.

Well, at the very least we would've got a much better Keanu-acted film with much better choreographed action scenes.

If you told me this 18 years ago about a potential Matrix sequel being worse, I would've laughed in disbelief :funny:

Well John Wick 4 is happening now and is coming out in 2023 at least.

That said, wonder how much longer they can keep that series going.

I just saw this movie, and I don’t know if I would call this a good movie, but it’s certainly an interesting watch. I think I should’ve rewatched the originals one more time in order to be fresh enough for this. Now I will confess I only now watched the original Matrix movies for the first time earlier this year, and while they didn’t blow me away I came away appreciating their impact and artistry put into them. The series really is so influential so I respect it in that regard even though I have no huge attachment to the franchise. This movie seemed to be this meta commentary on the series legacy and the trends it started in modern blockbuster filmmaking. And I think that’s a pretty interesting and fascinating way to approach a nostalgia sequel. It’s not great, but if nothing else it certainly wasn’t anything I was expecting.

I really dug this flick. Will say the fight choreography was lacking though. Or at least how it was filmed. Still, this was a cute and cheeky lil sequel.

Ask me again when I sober up. Happy holidays.

Wasn't the director of John Wick playing Tiffany's Husband? They could had asked him for some help on the matter

Pretty sure HBOMax has nowhere near what Disney and Netflix have.
Think they’re talking about USA subscriptions only since HBO Max isn’t available everywhere. Last I checked Netflix was still in the lead:

Netflix: 74M
HBO: 45M
Disney: 40M

I succesfully managed to convince a few of my friends to not check this out and make the same mistake as me.

After i explained what happens in it and how bad the technical aspects are, they were quite shocked and in disbelief (and they are all big Matrix fans).

This film really won't age well. Watch the audience score on RT drop even more in the next few weeks.
Seems we getting so many mediocre movies this day. And then we see Spiderman make 250M opening weekend and you realize why. Because there isnt anything worth checking out other than Spiderman. And it's not like that movie is any great. It's just isnt mediocre and flawed as rest of them.

TBH, I enjoyed NWH quite a lot. It's a fun film with good acting, decent visuals, well-shot action, amazing fan service and doesn't sh*t on what came before it with some weird meta commentaries.

Basically the opposite of Resurrections :funny:

There is a reason one of these movies is hitting $1 billion at the BO today and has a 99% audience score. It's simply great time at the cinema.

I'm not sure how this got made with such a terrible script. This script couldn't help me pass my screenwriting classes I took 15 years ago. This film is an incoherent mess. It has some good ideas, like Neo questioning reality and his sanity and Neo and Trinity faintly remembering each other in the coffee shop. But the film's execution of these ideas is incredibly bad. This is like a first draft of a script, which needs at least two more rewrites with input from a script doctor or two.

Why does everything look so cheap? And discount Morpheus and Smith were both cringey, jokey, and unnecessary. Just come up with new, badass characters instead of SNL level spoofs of these legendary characters/actors. Matrix Ressurections is an absolute disaster! Studios have now ruined the Terninator, Star Wars, and Matrix franchises.

3/10

Watching this a second time, I think this movie works much better if you consider it an epilogue to the OG movies. This is such a small-scope movie about Neo & Trinity.
There isn't any ensuing war brewing, the peace Neo brought at the end of Revolutions still largely exists, Zion has moved on, there are new relationships/partnerships that exist in the 'real' world now, and that's it. The Matrix is still the Matrix, but there isn't any significant movement here. We are just given an update on the happenings of the world the Wachowskis built, and that's it.
I think a true sequel trilogy should be built on top of this in the hands of a new creative team for sure, but I don't really know where you can go from here.

This is flat out false. There were lots of quality movies released this year that have and will bomb hard because of the general stranglehold from blockbusters. West Side Story, The Last Duel, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, etc

and it’ll be the same damn story next year. I fear The Northman will get buried.

Belfast as a great movie.

I really don't get why Smith and digital Morpheus were in this movie. They could've just been new characters. Groff doing a facsimile of Smith just made me think about how inferior he is to Hugo Weaving. Yahya Abdul Mateen was wasted playing a modal version of Morpheus. After the first half he just kind of disappears into the background.

That said, Jessica Henwick I found compelling. Like when she was onscreen I could not stop looking at her and wanting to see more of her. She was the only one of the new characters who left an impression on me.

Also Jude Gallagher because the actor, Andrew Caldwell, was the voice of Howard on Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja.

The Last Duel was incredible and The Northman is in my top 3 most anticipated films of 2022. It's gonna be a shame if that movie gets buried. Robert eggers deserves so much recognition and far more than what he currently has.

People try to act like blockbusters aren't suffocating the industry but they are. There's no reason at all that The Matrix should have opened as low as it did.

I mean there many good reasons for this. It got a day and date streaming release on HBO Max.

Secondly, are you really trying to say that The Matrix Resurrections is independent of the blockbuster system? It's a freaking sequel to an established billion dollar franchise. The Matrix Resurrections is not some mid-budget or little indie flick here. It was meant to be a blockbuster release.

I probably should have re-phrased what I was saying. Comic book films, in particular, are the ones that have the biggest hold on the box office currently. specifically the MCU. I think the day and date release and releasing so close to No Way Home doomed the Matrix, which is something I predicted.

I don’t get it. People complain that nobody is going to the theaters but then when they do, they complain it’s for a blockbuster. I’m sure the theaters aren’t complaining right now.

I'm certainly not complaining. If you know me, you know how much I value cinemas and that they are still thriving. Just pointing out that the Matrix had a lot working against it with the way WB positioned it's release.

I just think we’re moving towards a default landscape in Hollywood in which blockbusters will be the only movies released in theaters and everything else will either go to streaming or just won’t be made anymore. That’s really sad to see

It's not the fault of the comic book movies. It's the corporate executives that are at fault.

Secondly, with The Matrix Resurrections, the audience reaction, critics included, has been fairly mixed. Let's also not forget they are picking up after sequels that audiences found to generally be fairly underwhelming. The franchise peaked and had its heyday 18 years ago.

This is the outcome of major corporations buying all the studios and owning all the content. This is why AT&T never should've been allowed to buy Warner Bros. despite it being clear violation of antitrust.
