The Matrix Resurrections

Did you just quote Elon Musk as if he is source of actual knowledge? In real life?

Hey now. I'm not endorsing his worldviews or company or anything like that, just using an example of how our reliance on technology and the fusion of man and machine is something that's in our regular modern discourse now-- the point was that the Matrix was talking about these things 20 years ago. I was not stating his view as if it's a fact, just framing it as a relevant idea to our times. We're all undeniably way more 'plugged in' than we were when the original film came out and it's accelerating at a rapid rate to where microchip implants is now a thing.

Anyway. I like The Matrix films.

The numbers for this are far worse than I could have imagined. :csad:

Just thought there were more people around who would be curious enough to see what a modern Matrix might be like. Pandemic and HBO Max are significant factors but I thought it would still do better than this.

Its getting some terrible word if mouth online. I haven't seen vitriol from a fanbase like this since Last Jedi. Or maybe the female Ghostbusters.

What really kills this for me is basing it around Neo and Trinity again. I'd be ALL FOR this world following Bugs and a few other cool characters with a plan for the writers to eventually figure out a way to actually have a human revolution. A studio could argue that they NEED Neo and Trinity back to make money...but this film isnt making money anyway.

I dont want this franchise to become another braindead action franchise...there has to be philosophy etc involved...but I'm not sure that they really hit the right points with this film.

If you wanted to make that argument, perhaps it would have been better to use a source of actual knowledge on the topic, and not someone who has been proven to be full of crap?

I am HERE for the Elon Musk hate. He makes me sick.

Trying to get my brother to watch this and not be discouraged by the discourse online. I feel bad for this movie because I really liked it, and I feel it's release strategy wasn't good. I can't wait to pick up the physical 4k.

Warner Brothers screwed all of their 2021 films with that stupid HBO Max deal and their terrible marketing. And this film probably suffered the most. While I’m not sure a different strategy and release date (i.e., not when Omicron was peaking and against a juggernaut like Spider-Man) would have made it a hit, it definitely would have performed a bit better.

Yup. And I've noticed it's made some people think that the right to streaming stuff was permanent. My brother has asked if Scream is coming right to streaming, and I said no. Lots of people seem comfortable with it, which isn't good for the films themselves.

Saw it tonight and enjoyed it, the route they went was certainly bold and ambitious that could be considered convoluted i guess, but I found unravelling the mystery as it unfolded engaging and intriguing. I think the fact what Neo did in the first trilogy still had an impact was important, and the unexpected alliance between humans and sentient machines was an unexpected angle that worked well.

I also liked how they tied Mr. Smith and Neo together inside the new construct as game developer and slimy corporate boss, Neo being the creator of a game franchise based off the first trilogy in his new Matrix life was a great idea and made for some entertaining stuff in the first half of the movie, and I thought the explanation of Neo and Trinity being the key to keeping The Matrix stable as long as they're kept far enough apart was a good central throughline, as I think 'The One' is actually their relationship as opposed to Neo himself, their connection is what lifts them to become that unique threat to the machines.

Keanu and Carrie Ann gave really well gauged, understated performances in the key scenes between Neo and Trinity, and when she finally awakens it was badass. Neil Patrick Harris made for a smug, smirking new villain as The Analyst and I enjoyed the scene where he explained what he'd done to Neo while Trinity stood time frozen looking mighty fine! :O Of the new characters Bugs was easily the standout for me, she had the vitality and commitment that the franchise needs going forward, whilst also being a badass in the action sequences and with a cool look and charisma, I also enjoyed the entertaining way they utilized Morpheus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was fun and slick.

The first two movies were hyped for their huge set pieces but there was nothing groundbreaking here, that being said there were some good sequences like Bugs escaping the Agents, Morpheus attempt to get Neo out of The Matrix, their kung-fu fight redux and the big finale chase with Trinity and Neo on the motorbike was visually stunning, as was Neo taking out the chopper.

Neo and Trinity dropping in on The Analyst at the end reminded me of the scene at the end of the pilot for STAS where Superman pays Lex a visit, and Neo and Trinity kinda looked like a sexier version of Zod and Ursa. :funny:

It was never going to be the game changing groundbreaker the first movie was but as a belated sequel to the trilogy I felt it took a smart and evolving approach, was visually the best looking movie in the franchise, and introduced new players while still delivering Neo & Trinity and some good action.

8/10

Nice review man, glad you liked it/appreciated what it was going for.

 in the sequence where they first go to rescue Trinity and Agent Smith cuts them off with the Merovinghian, who were the other two guys? Were they supposed to be The Ghost brothers from Reloaded?

So happy you enjoyed it, Hunter! I've settled on an 8/10 for the film, myself. I'd said it before, but I do think this will be looked at in at least a more open minded light years down the road. The movie feels like it came out at the wrong time too, and it got devoured by stuff like Spider-Man unfortunately.

I can't wait to add it to my collection.

After rewatching both 21 and 22 Jump Street I really do wonder what a Matrix film directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller would have looked like since I believe those two would have nailed the meta elements so much better.

I forget just how meta those movies are, especially the first one, but it's still pretty damn clever how they managed to pull those films off and completely reinvigorate a long, thought to be dead franchise.

I still wish we got an actual third film too.

I'll say it... There's no there, there with Henwick in this film.

I like Jessica but she's VERY over praised as a performer online and definietly over praised for her contributions to this film. If a review is honest... She's just there. There's nothing interesting about her or done with the character of Bugs. Frankly, I would take a removal of all of Bug's scenes and place in the story, replacing her screen time with Trinity instead and gave the female lead of the original trilogy something to actually do in this story.

There's a solid performer with Henwick and she can be good... But not this film.

I thought she was fine in the movie but I don't really quite get where the huge amount of hype comes from? Like she's been okay in this and the marvel stuff but there seem to be a weird fan obsession thing. Is it the looks?

I agree - i really like Jessica and was looking forward to her role in Resurrections, but she was incredibly wasted as Bugs in the film.
