The Matrix Resurrections

If there wasn't, this movie surely wouldn't have flopped as bad as it did, would it?
All that means is that not many people were interested enough to go see it in the first place. Not that it was universally hated by those who did.

This popped up on Crave, and I was thinking about watching it. I've seen the other Matrix films, but if I was someone who enjoyed the first and second but absolutely hated the third, where would I fall with this one?

No telling lol. It’s so completely different from the others there’s no real point of comparison, imo. It’s a much smaller and more personal story than the other sequels for sure. If you’d consider that a good thing, go for it, but if you’re looking for that Matrix “epicness” or are in it for the action, you’ll likely be disappointed.

This thing completely came and went though, almost like it didn't happen at all. I don't hear any chatter --good or bad-- online or in real life about this movie. I don't even think many people even bothered to press play on it on HBO Max. I wonder if the 18 year gap plus the fact that Revolutions has such a toxic reputation made many just simply not even give it a chance.

I enjoyed Sense8 a lot, so I'm going to take that as a good sign if it's a smaller, more personal story.

The listing says it's 2 hours and 27 minutes long. I just want to know if it's worth fighting my natural restlessness at that 90 minute mark.

I have not watched Sense 8, but I've heard people say it has more of a Sense 8 vibe than what we expected from The Matrix.

I'll just say Reloaded and Revolutions aren't great, but I can still enjoy rewatching them for the action and fight scenes. Resurrections has none of that... I have no desire to see it again any time soon.

It does have some interesting ideas, so I do think it's worth a watch if you like The Matrix in general. (And you don't have to pay for a ticket anyway)

Resurrections has more heart than the previous sequels in my opinion. It's a bit more playful too. Hard to say if you'll enjoy it as it is quite different to the others and very difficult to compare because of it. I'd say go for it. There's a few familiar faces for Sense8 fans so that can be a fun bonus.

Matrix Resurrections is an interesting beast because it comes across as a romantic sci fi movie in a way, and I think a lot of people are and will be surprised by that after watching. For some, it's awful, and for others like myself, it's got a lot of heart and it's bold too. I loved this movie and while i know opinions on it probably sway more towards negative, it was one of my favorite movies of 2021.

I think this is the main thing that divides people. Some go into the Matrix looking for kickass action, and because of that they'll likely be let down, but if you're all in on Neo and trinitys story, there's definitely stuff to love here.

It was and should be both. That’s what made the first so successful, among other things.

Its a mess of a movie. The first 40minutes are cool with the meta stuff going on. But further on its a disaster. Wish they never made it.

I agree, with the exception that from the very start, this film felt like a disaster lol.

The moment they introduced the meta element of the story, I wanted to walk out of the screening so bad, but suffered through the rest of it.

The thing is, I think Lana wishes she didnt make it. This is a movie that was made with arms folded and its blatantly clear. Lana made this because WB was going to continue this franchise one way or the other. And like any other creator, Lily and Lana are probably very territorial over their creation and they figured, “if this is gonna be be run into the ground it might as well be us that does it.” Lana didnt wanna make this, she did this half heartedly, and i think not havint Lily there also hurt the production too.

Yeah the movie also looked much cheaper.

It legitimately looked like a CW show. The natural lightning used by whoever took over as a DP after John Toll's departure didn't help at all. The "cheap-ness" was most notable when they used the slow motion bullet time effect in the scene with the Architect. It looked laughably bad.

The wire work during the Neo/Smith fight and when Neo & Trinity jumped from the building, looked horrendous.

The fights were badly choreographed, Morpheus was reduced to a comic relief (e.g the "drunkness" effect when he and Neo were trying to escape), there were cute-looking machines now in the real world?!

The music from Tykwer and Klimek was utterly forgettable, except when they used Don Davis' motifs from the first 3 films.

I can go on and on but overall - a disaster of a film, imo.

That indeed could be why its so bad, on purpose.

Yeah, and also the soundtrack was really boring.
Wish Davis did the score again.

I'm gonna to have to disagree there. Yeah, there was a lot in this that was venting about the situation, sure. But, I also think there was a genuine desire to fix what she saw was a big mistake of the final movie.

I do have to laugh at people calling this movie looking cheap, yet hold up MCU as the height of cinematography.

Most of MCU looks bad too, Total lack of cinematography with its own character.

Hmm, respectfully disagree. I dont think Lana and Lily feel they DID make a mistake with Revolutions. In fact they probably feel it was us the audience’s fault for not comprehending what they were going for. They were obviously trying to make a super subversive blockbuster movie but its not what we all wanted so it was widely panned. Ressurections, i think, is Lana throwing her hands up both to WB and to us the audience who didnt like Revolutions and saying, “here is this what you wanted?!”

That’s definitely it for the 4th movie IMO. It’s more of a romance movie than an action one and that put a lot of people off.

I really enjoyed this myself, and I honestly felt people were being unfair towards it. This wasn't meant to be the start of another trilogy; it's an epilogue showing where everyone is now.
Exactly! It's an epilogue to the trilogy. I think sadly it came out too many years later, but Im just happy we got something so personal out of it. I'm genuinely curious how it'll be looked at years from now.
