The Matrix Resurrections

I guess Lilly was the one with all the action chops.

I haven't seen the film, but I don't think it's that simple.

James McTeigue is an uncredited co-director on this, he played a big part in the making of the original films, and he directed V for Vendetta so clearly they had a lot of talent on set in terms of action filmmaking.

I think people being disappointed with the action could be a result of the fact that Lana's style has shifted to a more improvisational, naturalistic sort of thing as opposed to the carefully constructed, graphic novel come to life approach of the original films. Something that is more constructed in the editing room.

Admittedly, I will miss the style of the original films, but I'm also very intrigued by the idea of re-entering this world with a totally fresh visual approach. And fwiw, I've also heard people say that the action is great and the film is a visual feast. I do love the vibrant colors myself.

I'm so curious about this movie at this point. both the positive, and mixed reactions have me very intrigued as to what this film is actually like. Got my ticket for the theater showing on wednesday! Will do my second viewing on HBO Max.

I’m planning to see this straight after Xmas with my sister who is a huge Matrix fan (original is her favourite film).

that was confirmed by Lana in 2 interviews . Plus Keanu talked about it how it was different on set compared to the trilogy.

My anticipation has dwindled down after hearing some hard core fans review the movie. It sounds like a lot of people wanted to love this, but didn't live up to expectations. I hate hearing that, especially after leaving the cinema completely hyped after watching the new Spider-Man.

Same here.

I am a hardcore Matrix fan and if you told me Spider-Man would blow the Matrix out of the water in terms of quality when Resurrections' first trailer dropped, I would've laughed. Don't get me wrong, Spidey always looked fun, but we were getting a new Matrix film after 18 years and the trailers for it looked amazing.

After these reactions though, looks like Spidey will be king - both in terms of box office and actual quality as it actually turned out a great film.

I am still going to the cinema to see Matrix on Wednesday, but my expectations are now lowered and much more in check. After reading a few spoilers, it's a bit shocking to find out the direction Lana has taken this into. Brings me TLJ vibes and not in a good way. Really hope these plot decisions work better in the context of the film.

I've managed to avoid spoilers for the new Matrix, but as soon as I heard "TLJ vibes" it felt like someone threw salt in my eyes lol. I was so excited for TLJ, probably more than any other film made, only to be crushed by reality and heart broken. Good for the folks who like it, but I wasn't one.

I honestly think the same as you. I really didn't even think Spidey would live up to the rave reviews it was getting from everyone... but for me, it sure did. I really was hoping to see this new Matrix film be the best one since the original, but it just doesn't sound like it gonna be that good. Which is really sad.

I'm on the fence about going to the movies now, I probably still will. I just don't wanna go and then feel like I should have just watched it at home.

I haven't seen either film yet. But c'mon, this is so predictable.

Spider-Man was always going to be a safe film that is laying on buckets of fan service and aiming to be a crowd-pleasing experience that the whole family can enjoy. It is designed to make all the money, and it will.

After The Matrix sequels and the rest of the Wachowskis filmography, did anyone think this film wasn't going to be weird, subversive and polarizing? Many of us are excited for precisely that reason. We currently have an overabundance of films in the Spider-Man No Way Home category and a lack of films that are taking ambitious swings and exploring big ideas in our blockbusters.

I think the contrast between the two films coming out around the same time is interesting. There is a place for both. I'm seeing both films on the 26th with a couple of friends, really excited to see both but I'm definitely more excited for The Matrix---it will be the 'headliner' of the day that we watch second.

I also like TLJ, so mileage may vary here. Although nothing in the trailers seems to indicate that we won't be getting a lot more of Neo being Neo than we got with that in terms of Luke in TLJ, so I don't even get the comparison. Is our film discourse getting so lazy now than anytime something is polarizing, it's automatically The Last Jedi all over again? I have a feeling this movie will be its own beast.

Also, Carrie-Anne looks stunning.

It's a TLJ situation not because Neo's being compared to Luke in TLJ, but because Resurrections takes weird story choices much like TLJ did - and not necessarily in a good direction.

And like TLJ, these choices seem to alter and neglect what's already been established in the previous films for the sake of subverting expectations.

Go read some opinions from people who've seen this to see why TLJ comparisons arise.

I'm not gonna lie, I am very intrigued by the whole "tonally different than the other movies" bit I am seeing about this movie.

No thanks. The movie is almost here, I'm not going to ruin my experience by getting caught up in the discourse before I've had a chance to see it for myself. To quote the Oracle, I'd rather just go in and "make up my own damn mind."

Yeah, the LAST thing I'd want to do is to have another franchise I love be ruined by discourse. Which is what nearly happened to me with Star Wars.

The whole idea that the movie takes "weird story directions" is kind of funny to me. What are the "conventional" story directions for a movie like this even supposed to be?

Last time I checked, the fact that a Matrix 4 even exists is in itself, a weird story direction LOL. Neo and Trinity were freakin' DEAD at the end of the last film and here we are. The fact that this movie's existence feels so improbable in the first place is half the fun.

After reading about TLJ comparisons, think I might just save my money and watch on HBO Max

What i've wrote above is what i've managed to pick up from random people online who have seen this. I haven't seen it myself.

I'd still recommend forming your own opinion (i am still going to see it at a cinema), but i've seen a pattern of re-occurring complaints from all the mixed reactions so far.

The invocation of TLJ is DOA imo. I don't care what you say, if TLJ handled Luke the way Mando did it wouldn't have caused 1/10th of the sh**storm with fan reactions even with every other decision it made. The backlash was 90% rooted in Luke's character. I'd go as far as saying if he just had lived at the end it would be less divisive.

This movie is focusing on Neo and Trinity, bringing them back from the dead, we're gonna get to see them both kick ass, it should be a lot of fun...seriously stop letting other people color your own opinions before even seeing it. These are two totally different films with totally different creative visions. I guarantee you that people who hate TLJ will love this film, people who love TLJ will hate it...it will be its own thing.

For crying out loud this is a series about thinking for one's self and making up your own mind. Don't fall into silly, half-baked groupthink before even seeing the movie. Free your mind!

I'm sorry but seeing people in such a rush to ruin the experience for themselves and pre-judging the film based on a select few reactions is depressing AF to me.

I'm somewhat of a TROS apologist and don't mind some of the ideas (just verry choppy, sloppy execution), but TLJ is the best overall film of the sequel trilogy IMO. I believe time will bear that out if we're ever able to escape the toxic discourse and look at the movie without all the hyperbole.

But that has absolutely 0 to do with The Matrix series and the direction its own co-creator goes with the new film. Star Wars suffered from a lack of a coherent creative vision. That is not the case here, just at the ground level. It would be like if Lucas was involved with the ST. I am ready to just strap in and go for the ride without any particular expectations of what this movie "should" be. The story of the original trilogy is/was complete and self-contained and now Lana wants to say something new with some of these characters that she created. I owe it to myself as a fan to go in with an open mind.

The Matrix Resurrections is written and directed by one of the original creators of The Matrix. That alone makes this situation very different from TLJ. If we’re going to compare it to Star Wars, it’s closer to the prequels: the original creator is bored at the idea of treading familiar ground, so they do something very different which turns off a lot of fans.

I liked it, BTW. Not amazing, but pretty cool.
