It was his use of rotoscoping. He definitely had his own thing going. He wasn't trying to be Disney, that's for sure.

That creature design kinda reminds me of Mike Mignola's style in the Amazing Screw-On Head. And if anyone hasn't watched the animated pilot for that, do so ASAP. It's only like 20 minutes long and on YouTube. Adapted by Bryan Fulller, starring Paul Giamatti, David Hyde Pierce and Patton Oswalt.
