From what I can tell of the costume picture of Piccolo that we have seen it's not very 'faithful' to the original. In the original he wore clothes, not armor.

Young Daimaô.
Older Daimaô.

Honestly, I hope he doesn't fight in that thing--and I believe the Tenka'ichi Budôkai does not permit armor neither does it weapons--because then it would be pretty stupid.

My thoughts on Piccolo's movie costume:

First, a character flaw that many of Dragon Ball's villians possess is that they are very arrogant and believe that their natural strength is all that they will ever need. So any opponent Piccolo would face on Earth would be like an insect to him, heavy armor would not be a factor in the battle.

Second, Lord Piccolo is the Demon King who wishes to rule the world with an ironfist. I think this costume better reflects his "Lord" status and that of a tyrant more so than his more humble attire in the manga.

Goku and Piccolo both wore weighted clothing or armor when fighting in the world martial arts tournament.

If the character evolves into Ma. Jr ,the martial artist, we may see a change in the way he presents himself. I don't expect his appearance to change in this movie though.

In a way I hope so. That kinda was what ruined the novelty of Venom in Spider-Man 3 when they leaked him.

Yeah but Dragonball is less like Spider-man 3 and more like Transformers in where it needs to go marketing wise. For transformers they needed to show people that it was a unique action film and with the main trailer they did by showing robot related carnage that blew most of the other summer tent pole trailer out of the water.
Dragonball needs to dot he same because the plot sounds to the average person very reminiscent of a lot of movies. What will make people watch it over the other suimmer movies is seeing evidence in the trailer that this is a film with a lot of kung-fu/action film traditions but that it is set apart from other films via its unique fantasy sci-fi twist. To do that they need to show the cool powers and the unique and weird villains. Which means showing Piccilo. I mean there is no point in keeping the main villain a secret if you make it so that no one is interested anyway.

They have in my opinion kept piccilo`s look secret till now because they want his first appearance to be in the trailer. They don`t want there to be a million pics of the guy on the net before their advertising campaign has started to roll. But in the smae way they would want to use piccilo`s appearance in their promotional stuff. Otherwise why keep it secret if you are not holding in back for the marketing?

Well, they're martial artists, it is about pride. Piccolo needs no armor, he is the Demon King and frankly his Manga/Anime clothes are classy.

To be fair that is because you didn`t need to show him. I mean who doesn`t know what the hulk looks like?

The general public doesn`t know of Piccillo so why bother keeping it a secret until the release date when it isn`t going to cause any hype amongst non-dragonball fans?

well i was looking up in the hulk forum up then and everyone wanted to see the NEW hulk
