Huh, pretty good week there. Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps are always good and while Green Arrow is new for me I really enjoyed the last issue and find myself eager to see where this new direction goes. I'm indifferent about The Return of Bruce Wayne and would have dropped it before now if it wasn't so important to the Batman franchise. Secret Avengers and X-Men Legacy are typically good and Uncanny X-Men has me curious due to the whole Five Lights storyline. Curious what's going to come of that.

All in all good week. But why the heck is Uncanny $4? Please tell me that's not a perminant change.

 

[Dread]

UNCANNY X-MEN is $3.99 because Marvel would like to earn more money. The pain of their customers and retailers, frankly, is something they care less about than what's on NBC's Friday night line up. They'd charge $7.99 for a piece of toilet paper that Brian M. Bendis personally used, with certificate of authenticity, if they could. All business is about rooking your suckers (customers) for as much as you can for as long as you can. Comics aren't as shameless about it in the midst of the Great Recession as, say, sports franchises or even cable TV, but they're coming awfully close.

Until, and unless, the entire direct market collapses, I don't see Marvel scaling back their price practices. Their plan is to flood the market. For every title they can due to low sales, they sell at least 2-3 more comics in it's place. DC will be unable to match them entirely because DC will end up selling 10-20 fewer comics a month.

As another unrelated tidbit, it will be interesting to see how GREEN ARROW #2 sells against WONDER WOMAN #601. I say that because despite all the media attention and fan hoopla over WW #600, GREEN ARROW #1 actually outsold it; at least in the first print. WW #600 will see a second printing, and I am not sure if Green Arrow will. A second print could put her over the top. It was still a massive improvement over where WW usually sells, though.

Yeah, I just looked it up and Uncanny's $4 through the next three issues at least. That ticks me off. Just because a freakin book sells well for a crossover doesn't mean it should jump in price. I wish I wasn't so addicted to the books becaues I've really grown to hate Marvel. It's not good for me to wish all their stuff would fail miserably when they're my main supplier of comics. I really need to buckle down and start dropping things.

As a Marvel fan, you can't win. If a book/franchise sells well, it will get a jump in price. If it is a franchise that you love but isn't expected to sell well, like DOCTOR VOODOO or YOUNG ALLIES, than the debut issue will be $3.99 and scare anyone curious away. Everyone from industry insiders to sales analyzers for freebie websites seem to deny that the $3.99 price is having any effect on sales in the long term. Even though if, say, a mere 1 out of 20 comic buyers were at least hesitant about trying or buying $3.99 comics, that impact alone would be major.

DC is willing to gouge it's fans, but less so than Marvel.

It's like that with sports, too. If your team is in the dumps, fans will be gouged to make up for losses on investments. If your team makes the playoffs (or heaven forbid, wins a championship), ticket prices go up, games start later, and so on. You really can't win.

To be fair, there is some possibility that Marvel's price increases are due to generous pay packages for creators. Often times when someone criticizes Marvel pricing, Joe Q. or Tom B. say that it costs a lot to pay the top talent. On the other hand, the top creators in the business were still willing to flock to Marvel even in the beginning of 2008 when 85% of comics were still $2.99, so I think that is a load of bull****.

Somewhere, Jim Shooter is crying in his beer because he was a tyrant about work ethics and schedules and trying to make more bucks and bulldozing over creators, and his Marvel never did as well.
