My only concern is having Warlock without Cypher. They IMO are a packaged deal. Doug's power is what made their friendship perfectly suited for each other and helped give Warlock a strong link to the group. I hope if Warlock is in the film, that Doug is as well, although I fear they will skip him since his power is kinda boring and would translate onto film worse than in the books. I can see them merging his character with an existing one like Dani. Like expanding her limited TP to allow her to form an empathic connection to him.
I just want to point out that this is the post-Fall of the Mutants lineup, fwiw.
I'm not overly familiar with the NEW MUTANTS, but I am looking forward to this. Is there any must read trades I should look into?
A lot of the early stuff is collected in New Mutants Classics. Vol. 1 is the Graphic Novel, and #1-7 (as well as Uncanny X-Men #167), Vol. 2 is #8-17, Vol. 3 is #18-25. #18-20 is the Demon Bear Saga, which is one of my favorites, but I think you need the buildup that led to it.
Another great issue is New Mutants #45 ("We Were Only Foolin'"), which explores prejudice, student bullying, and the desire to fit in in a way that's one of the best handled I've ever seen. It reminds me a lot of the "It Gets Better" campaign and it's just a great stand-alone story.
My suggestion is to get Marvel Unlimited if you don't mind digital versions since you can read everything for one flat price. During this era, Chris Claremont often treated his books interchangeably, so there would be a scene in Uncanny X-Men with Magneto on an island. His story would continue in the following month, but Claremont would put it in a New Mutants issue, etc. So it's a good way to follow along by reading both if you haven't read this era of X-Men before.
So Moonstar, Magik, Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Cannonball and Warlock, that's a solid list. I can wait for Karma and Magma in a sequel, especially if they do the Nova Roma storyline with Selene.
Just pointing out that everyone else uses their mutant name except Mirage (Daniel Moonstar) there.
