I didn't say they should have everything already prepared to release the 6 films fast, that's why the first should try to feel as a stand alone that may or may not have a sequel, because that one would prove if there should be more films.

In theory, that would be sound. The question, of course, is how. It would be difficult to make the first movie a standalone. Firstly, they'd need to set up the whole 'defeat the Firelord to bring about peace' plot. Secondly, as a series of six, I assume that the first movie would cover the first half of season one - which would mean there would be an implied sequel at the very least.

All i said that could make the first a stand alone is referred in my first post.

I'm just saying it's easy to say 'make it standalone' without sitting down and actually plotting out how to make it standalone. A lot of the things introduced in the first half of season 1 (specifically mastering water) only got resolved in the second half of season 1, with the two main plots (Aang mastering all four elements and ending the war) only get resolved at the very end of the series. In other words, breaking each season into two movies would make every odd-numbered movie (including the first movie) feel incomplete; ergo, not standalone.

In other words, the one thing Shyamalan did right was plan for three movies (one movie per season); instead of six.

Did you even read my first post?
I sumarised the story for the first film and how to make it stand alone, it would stand alone in the way The Matrix 1 and Star Wars IV did, you have this hero who is destined to one day free the world, that's why the 1st film could work like that.

I did. However, the story is all over the place (trying to tell too many stories at once) instead of focusing on a single plot, with an ending where the main characters don't achieve anything other than set up a sequel hook (finding out about the comet; which was the only event of note from the Winter Solstice two-parter). This is precisely why I said it wouldn't be a standalone.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I think the films should be remade, but not by an American film company. I would love to see what an asian "wuxia" film director could do with the material. I would love to see what Yuen Woo Ping could do with it.

Trailer for his next movie, "True Legend":

Avatar:The Last Airbender > Harry Potter :o

If the right director makes this film, the studio will easily have a huge franchise on their hands. I think they should reboot it and maybe split book 3 into two parts.

it is too late imo

because there really is no other way to tell the story

the story and plot points would essentially be the same as m nights film just made better

too soon and in people's minds atm

M. Night Shyamalan screwed the franchise out of that. Even with a reboot, I can't see it ever becoming the success it could have been before the movie came out. Shyamalan tainted it.

I don't know where that came from, but you do know that the creators of the show were inspired by Lord of the rings and Harry Potter ans so they wanted to make as big a mythology like those :o

I am quite amazed by how bad that movie is. Given how good the show is. You almost have to wonder whether or not it was deliberate.

It's not deliberate...M. Night just doesn't know how to make a fun, adventure movie. His movies are always gloomy, moody and doomy.

With Harry Potter gone, I would love to see another movie series with a lot of entries to look forward to.

I doubt it would ever happen, but it would be great to have the writers of the show pen the screenplay, get a cast that looks the part, and can act for a change and a competent director make the films.

I believe it came from my head? :o
I just believe that this franchise could be the next big thing. Harry Potter and LOTR have been huge and I could totally see this getting the same fan base. Avatar:The Last Airbender has always been limited because it is after all a nickelodeon tv show (personally, I would've never watched it if my friends weren't constantly talking about it). If it can get mainstream (while retaining the quality of the tv show)with a great movie then I'm willing to bet it will be the next Harry Potter. Its just an amazingly well made fantasy story that appeals to a wide demographic. I haven't experienced a great fantasy story like that since Potter and I think TLA is even better than potter...so yeah

I think another issue is what I call "The Nolanbat Effect." The idea that everything has to be "real" and "dark" according to Hollywood standards.

I'm going to guess that Paramount will do a reboot someday when they're in need of (or feel they need) some franchise that'll help bring in money for the next couple of years.

No, a sequel would not be nice since the base is made out of s**t. A reboot is needed down the line if they were ever thinking about moving forward with this.

and there's plenty of material from the show that was left out from the movie.

Thing is though, M Night's movie wasn't very realistic or dark by any means...it just wasn't FUN. It actually had some really nice cinematography, specifically dealing with the environments...but everyone so damn serious the whole time. There was too much angst, melodrama, and mundane acting that it makes me wonder what M. Night was seeing when he said he watched the cartoons with his kids. It also makes me wonder how M. Night deals with his OWN kids.....yeesh!

Everyone being too serious was a major problem, but it was just poorly adapted. They should have rewritten the plot. You can't fit an entire season into a show. They should have worked with the original writers to rewrite the plot to fit movie format. Some things just don't fit in a live-action movie (e.g. the moon spirit).

the only problem was the writing... everything else i think they did to the best of their abilities including shyamalans directing.

the writing was so bad it affected the actors, story, characters, and even believability of the vfx..

Well, they made a lot of unnecessary changes. The show's cultures were changed for no apparent reason. And the ethnicities were all over the place. But I assume the latter is just Hollywood racism. The first just seems to be a case of not caring or staying true to the story.

M. Night directed, produced, and screenplay by him. So he easily gets most of the blame. It ironic that's the first credit you see at the end because it reminds you exactly who to blame for such a mess.

Guys, I'm actually writing a reboot for the 1st film right now. I'm so glad this thread even exists haha. It's not in script form, it's a basic treatment (but very long). I basically give a rundown of each scene in each paragraph. It's still very much follows the 1st season, but I've changed things/added new things to it. I've tried making it feel more organic (instead of just a check list of scenes/episodes which is what a lot of these adaptations feel like). I'm including references of specific events from the other 2 seasons in season 1.

I'm really envisioning it like this as I write :
It's on the scale of Lord of the Rings, but has the beautiful imagery of Hero, and borrows the humor of Jack Sparrow.

There was very little character portrayed with the actors in M.Night's crapfest. I've actually given Aang an edge in my film; he's a trouble-making kid, who weilds an incredible amount of power. But not unlikeable. He gets himself into trouble, but he plays it off as more of a game (think Peter Pan). Because fundamentally, he is just a kid. He does realize his mistakes, but he can't help it. I did it this way so he can begin as an immature, yet powerful kid in the 1st film, then mature into the wise and powerful Avatar by the 3rd.

And Zuko is just badass. I feel the best way to portray him is as a completely obsessed and violent villain. I want him to be just downright evil. In order for his change to have the emotional punch it deserves, the guy needs to start out rotten. Very little whining from him in my version. I've also changed the reveal of the Blue Spirit. I figured to keep his identity a secret until the end of the 2nd movie.............(if you've seen the 2nd season, then you'd know how much better that works for the character and the desicions he's faced with).

I doubt it will ever get made. Or should I say, I doubt MY version will ever get made, but I like writing it and struggeling to find out what to leave in and what to leave out. I guess it's just good writing practice.
