The Nobel Peace prize winner of 2010 will be announced in just a few hours. Are there any last minute bets on who it will be? Does the person that wins really deserve it? Does the nobel Peace prize really mean anything anymore? Please discuss. I don't know if there is another thread elsewhere, or if this is the wrong place, so please move/close accordingly.

I'd say the credibility of the Nobel Peace Prize took a hit when they gave Obama one....a month into his presidency.

Or when Al Gore got it. Or Yasser Arafat.

I'm willing to accept Al Gore way more than Barack Obama and Yasser Arafat. At least Gore has done something as opposed to the jokes that were the awards given to Obama and Arafat.

Manbearpig! I hear he's half man and half bearpig

Hippie is being far nicer to Al Gore than he should be. The man (Gore, not HH) is a proven hypocrite of the worst kind. I hope hell has a special seat reserved for him right next (or maybe slightly beneath) Bill Clinton.

I do know that Mario Llosa is suppose to be rewarded with the Noble Prize this year for Literature. The award is long past due.

Mario Llosa is a Peruvian Classical Liberal who may be the most important Latin American intellectual and without question the most important classical liberal in Latin America. He started (as did most Latin American intellectuals) as a fan of the Castro Revolution before becoming an ardent opponent of collectivism.

People like to talk about how various groups are discriminated against in modern society, however libertarians are perhaps the greatest victims of bigotry in intellectual circles. Llosa has been a victim of such discrimination.

Congrats to him and to the Noble Committee for taking a step towards credibility.

I'm not saying that you have to agree with Gore, hell, there are handfuls of people far more deserving than him, but at least he did something.

Obama got an award for doing nothing and Arafat winning is just flat out disgusting. Gore winning at least makes me go "Oh well. Who cares" as opposed to the complete blowing of my mind that happened when Obama won.

How exactly has Al Gore contributed to peace in any way? If you want to award his movie (which is proven to be full of bad science), give him a science award, but PEACE?!

I guess you can say that trying to prevent global warming will lead to peace. I'm not saying that he should have gotten it. I'm just saying he deserves it waaaaaay more than Obama and Arafat.

To put it one way, it's like saying that Batman Forever is a better movie than Batman & Robin and Catwoman :awesome:

The question is not whats wrong with me, but whats wrong with Val Kilmer.

The fact that he hated Joel Schumaker to the point where they almost got into a fight and the reason why George Clooney had such a large codpiece was to stick it to Kilmer :o

I agree that Obama's winning of the Nobel Peace Prize was preposterous. It has become increasingly clear that the Noble committee is using this award more as a political statement rather than actually rewarding work.

so what doy guys think of Liu Xiaobo? Was this award really motivated by a desire to recognize his work or to simply stick it to the Chinese Government?

What do you guys think of China's response, blocking all searches relating to award and reportedly even terminating peoples phone accounts if they try to twitter about it or through other services? Some are calling it the Great Firewall of China. Its really nothing new from them, but it is interesting.
