Square Enix has announced Dissidia Final Fantasy NT for PlayStation 4. The console version of the arcade fighting game developed by Koei Tecmo studio Team Ninja is due out worldwide in early 2018.

Here’s an overview of the game, via its Amazon page:

About
Dissidia Final Fantasy NT introduces squad-based battle gameplay by allowing you to wage war with over 20 of your favorite Final Fantasy characters. Combining unparalleled visuals, seamless gameplay, and your favorite characters from the past 30 years of the franchise, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT welcomes all gamers with three-versus-three battles and the series renowned “bravery combat system”. While aiming for supremacy, call forth familiar summons like Ifrit, Shiva, and Odin to aid you and your party! Square Enix is collaborating with Team Ninja, one of the world’s leading developers in the fighting game genre, to bring Dissidia Final Fantasy NT to life.
Key Features

 • Final Fantasy, everything you could ever want – Over 20 playable Final Fantasy heroes and villains to play, over ten iconic battle arenas, legendary summons, tons of equippable weapons and moogles.
 • The return from Eos – Noctis makes his triumphant return to the PS4 as a combatant, fighting to save the world of Dissidia.
 • Legendary narrative – Dive into an all-new Final Fantasy story, written by writer Kazushige Nojima (Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy XV, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, and Kingdom Hearts II).
 • Your fantasy. Your fight – Each battle you wage, you will gain XP and gil to deepen the customization of your Final Fantasy champion – from EX skills to weapons to skins, level up.
 • Only the brave survive – The bravery combat system allows a much deeper and more methodical approach to the fighting game genre, separating luck from skill.

Here a few additional details from the Japanese live stream reveal:

 • “NT” means various things, including “New Tale,” “New Trial,” and “New Tournament.”
 • There is no “Story Mode,” as it is mainly a fighting game based on the arcade version, there will be a story not present in the arcade version, which you will be able to experience through event scenes.
 • The game has the same basic three-versus-three party battle system as the arcade version, but there are also PlayStation 4-only original systems. This includes additional battle rules, an offline single-player mode, and a mode to create rooms that only friends can join.
 • The arcade version will continue to be updated.
 • Arcade users and PlayStation 4 users won’t be able to fight against each other.
 • They’re investigating letting arcade users carry over some level of data.
 • The game will be playable at E3 2017 from June 13 to 15.

MMOs on Nintendo Switch?

Nintendo Switch has been celebrating great success since it's launch earlier this year, as well as a well-received E3 presentation. The console is quickly filling up with anticipated titles, including the official announcement of Skyrim for Switch (which now has a rumored release date). But what doesn't Nintendo Switch have in their salvo of scheduled games? An MMORPG. But there's someone who'd like to change that.
Naoki Yoshida, the producer credited with taking Final Fantasy XIV from a disaster pile into the successful MMORPG that it is now with A Realm Reborn, sat down with Kotaku to talk about the future of the game.

ff2.jpg

Final Fantasy XIV has been having some ups and downs this week. They've recently launched the early access of their newest expansion, Stormblood. A day later, they were under a constant DDOS attack that their team has been working nonstop to curb. But that hasn't stopped Yoshida from keeping high spirits about their game.
“Because we’re under maintenance right now, any sort of issues that happen at this timing could potentially delay the start of early access,” Yoshida said to Kotaku, “If my response is not fast enough, that could delay the opening of the service to players.” Then he laughed. “And plus for myself, I’m downloading the patch.”
Despite the rocky start and server issues, fans seem to be enjoying Stormblood, and Yoshida remains optimistic in his role. “I haven’t gotten sick of it yet,” He said. “There’s still a lot of things I want to accomplish inside of Final Fantasy XIV. Also, I’m not making the game for myself. It’s not like this is a project that I’m doing for my own ego. It’s more about: how do we satisfy our customers, our players, who have paid to play this game, and that payment is actually going into my salary.”

ff3.jpg

The interview carries on, talking about Yoshida's relationship with Square Enix, comparing their game development to World of Warcraft, and even what his favorite class is (which is Black Mage, by the way.)
The interview took an interesting turn when he was asked about bringing Final Fantasy XIV to Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. At first, his answer was tame, simply stating that he'd like to bring the game to as many players as possible. But then he explained that conversations have been ha with the two consoles' management.
"Conversations have been had with Mr. Phil Spencer of Microsoft, and the upper management teams of Nintendo. But I have proposed a condition every time I speak with any platform manufacturers. It’s that the game has to have the capability of cross-platform play.
[...]
If we are able to come to some sort of agreement, a handshake so to speak, or if it does end up being that unfortunately we can’t do a handshake with Final Fantasy XIV, either way we’ll make sure to communicate with our players. But we have been tenacious—we’ve been trying to keep at it and be persistent about our conversations."
Basically, Yoshida would like to have the title on other consoles and has, in fact, started some legwork to make it happen, but cross-platform play is integral to the success of the potential launches. Something Yoshida and Tim Sweeney of Epic Games would agree on.
If Final Fantasy XIV actually comes to Xbox One, it could greatly expand the player base. If it launches on Nintendo Switch, it could set the precedent of MMOs on Nintendo Switch, which would be new ground to break on a Nintendo console.

Final Fantasy VII Remake and Misc.

 • “We’re switching over to internal production on Final Fantasy VII Remake.” (Further reading.)
 • “Although there are parts [of Final Fantasy VII Remake] further along than Kingdom Hearts III, such as cutscenes, it is unlikely we’ll share information for a while as we switch from mainly external to mainly internal development.”
 • “[Project lead] Naoki Hamaguchi has been a part of this from the beginning and is a member of Business Division 1.”
 • “I, on the other hand, am not a member [of Business Division 1], so the person who is putting Business Division 1 in order concerning Final Fantasy VII Remake is Hamaguchi.”
 • “Similarly, there is Tai Yasue of Business Division 3. In that sense. I am sort of like a cross-sectional mercenary not tied to a Business Division.”
 • “If I belonged to a Business Division, I would basically be working full-time at that Business Divison, so it’s a system that lets me take on various jobs, including requests from other companies.”
 • (Regarding titles that are not Kingdom Hearts III or Final Fantasy VII Remake) “Right now, there isn’t anything that I’m directing, but there are a few things that I’m involved with. I’m not sure when which will be announced. (Laughs.)”
 • (Regarding Nomura doing character designs for Xenoblade Chronicles 2) “Tetsuya Takahashi of Monolith Soft is both my senior and mentor, who looked after me considerably when I was a newcomer. I have no reason to refuse a request from such a senior. (Laughs.) The work itself was finished quite long ago.”
If you missed it, catch the Toy Story world reveal trailer for Kingdom Hearts III here. The game will launch for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2018.

FF IX!! Nice!!

I've always wanted to play this game, so I'll be getting this.

hope it's a sign the rest of the "classic" FF titles will get digital releases on the PS4. I don't see why that can't happen.

though, I was kind of hoping that they would release an actual physical collection of the classic FF games ( 1 - 9 ).

I never finished IX.

IX is maybe my second favorite in the series. One of the last "classical" RPG's Square ever put out.

Hajime Tabata Would Pass On Taking Over Final Fantasy VII Remake, But Would Do A Final Fantasy VII-2. October 7, 2017 . 3:30am

Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata isn’t working on Final Fantasy VII Remake, but he was asked in a recent interview with Game Revolution at TGS 2017 if he’d take over the project if Square Enix were to offer the opportunity.

Here’s a snippet from the interview:
GameRevolution: Would you take over the Final Fantasy VII Remake if [Square Enix] offered that one to you?
Tabata: No.
GR: No, you wouldn’t!?
Tabata: No I wouldn’t.
GR: Can I ask why?
Tabata: It’s something I couldn’t make, myself. That’s about it.
GR: Would that be a lot of pressure?
Tabata: Final Fantasy VII is a special game.
GR: It’s the big one.
Tabata: It’s such a special numbered game that I don’t think I can remake that one. There’s so many fans out there, if I were asked to satisfy all those fans, I don’t think that’s something I could do, 100%. If [Square Enix] asked me to make a new Final Fantasy and take it in a new direction, I’d be happy to accept that one, but if they asked me to remake Final Fantasy VII — to release as if it were a modern game, just released today — no, I don’t think that’s something I can do. I think the only people who could do that are Mr. (Yoshinori) Kitase and Mr. (Tetsuya) Nomura.
GR: And you say that even though you did such a good job with Crisis Core?
Tabata: Well that wasn’t VII itself.
GR: A spinoff… a prequel.
Tabata: Yeah, it wasn’t the main game. Now, if they asked me to do Final Fantasy VII-2, that might be different.
GR: Which brings us back to your new project!
*Laughter in the room*
Tabata: We haven’t got that planned!

We’ll hear more from the rest of the Game Revolution interview with Hajime Tabata later this month.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is in development for PlayStation 4.
