I am sorry, but I really really don't see how bane was badass. at all. Great character, great villain sure, but badass? He didn't even cross my mind. No one in that movie struck me as "badass".

And Bilbo. I don't think characters always need a scowl and gruff voice to be an ass kicker. Sometimes the humble fellow who does something brave is even more bad ass than the regular warrior or gun slinger.

I think the term 'badass' is generally open to personal interpretation. One person's badass may not be the same as another's. Bane's actions were certainly out of the ordinary and violent, but is that enough to give someone the title of a real badass? Perhaps, perhaps not. Earlier in the thread I nominated Bilbo Baggins without a hint of sarcasm, but I could certainly appreciate if others don't put him in the badass category.

Badassness is subjective, I think.

I'm the only one to nominate Iron Man? Dude was more badass than all the other nominees combined, he survived a nuke he saved Manhattan from, revived by Hulk screaming, and one of his first thoughts was Schwarma

I'd put Iron Man above Hulk and Bane for sure. Personally I think James Bond trumps Iron Man though.

This doesn't count because it's from the comics, but I once remember a story where Tony Stark was about to be set upon by 20+ bad guys in a hotel room. He rigged the room to blow and leaped out the window, killing all the henchmen and (naturally) being caught by the Iron Man suit and flying away. That was pretty spectacular.
