The Official Checkmate thread

he's more of a doctor of medicine then global poltical science

true, but he is a brilliant man and, really, someone as bright as mr. teriffic doesn't really need anything more than someone to bounce ideas off of. maybe ralph dibny could be his bishop.

Picked up # 5 at the recommendation of some fellow Hype posters. I really liked it so I picked up the previous four issues over the weekend. Definitely some really great stuff. Though Alan Scott with the eye patch and the "Kobra" had me confused at moments, hehe. Is this Checkmate or SHIELD?!

But this is definitely an awesome story and some pretty awesome characters. I really hope Rucka and Saiz stay together for a while on this.

I really wish Alan would just grow his damn eye back so people could stop making SHIELD jokes. :o

Also, I don't think Mr. Terrific will be picking anyone as his Bishop because I hold out hope that Alan's not leaving. He'll find some way to come back after the rest of Checkmate realizes that they need him to maintain what little moral integrity they still have.

Im glad you love me, every person who buys Checkmate has a special place in heaven for them, excpet for GAH because he thinks the codenames are stupid.

Yes, no heaven for GAH. He'd just annoy everyone and generally make the place less heavenly anyway.

Theres actually a special place in hell for him. He gets to play chess with the devil for eternity.

I'm dropping this one: I think the premise is great, but after the initial promise of lots of Alan Scott and Kobra, things have degenerated into a bland Mr Average/Sasha Bored saga. I have come to realise that I am entirely indifferent to both characters.

I hope to look in again, though, when we finally have a solid supervillain for the organisation to thwart.

 :down

I'm loving this book at the moment. It rocks. Checkmate to me to is DC's answer to their own SHIELD. I have so far all the issues, and I'm expecting it to get even better. ****ing awesome.

Each to their own.
Well, if you're looking to Checkmate for superhero vs. supervillain action, you were setting yourself up for disappointment anyway. It's all about political intrigue.

I view it as a comic book version of Alias (before it sucked), 24, and Spooks combined. It helps that Alan is like Jack Bristow and Jack Bauer put together and, chillingly, made even more badass through ancient and arcane means that only Rucka's unholy soul is privy to.

I just love the mix of the superhero and espionage elements.

Obviously, I was aware of that. I do, however, think that Checkmate needs to do something. The initial hype for the comic hinted at some possible nuggets to enjoy in the future: the recovery of a nuclear device stolen by The Joker, for instance. That would be a decent page turner. As it is, I feel that the series often degenerates into mildly pretensious waffle, which is often fairly ignorant of genuine political structures. I suppose you could argue that impermanent members of the security council work in a different way in the DCU, but then, what's the point of having a storyline where the security council is key? Is it an attempt to give the book a pseudo-topical flavour, or is it just to pad out the grindingly slow realisation that Kobra are active in China? Far apart from that, I feel that the oppurtunity to stuff the book full of interesting second stringers has been wasted. I can only speak personally, but I find both Sasha and "Terrific" deathly dull at the moment.

The meaning is identical, except that my syntax makes no assumption of gender.
