The Official Checkmate thread

Obviously, I was aware of that. I do, however, think that Checkmate needs to do something. The initial hype for the comic hinted at some possible nuggets to enjoy in the future: the recovery of a nuclear device stolen by The Joker, for instance. That would be a decent page turner. As it is, I feel that the series often degenerates into mildly pretensious waffle, which is often fairly ignorant of genuine political structures. I suppose you could argue that impermanent members of the security council work in a different way in the DCU, but then, what's the point of having a storyline where the security council is key? Is it an attempt to give the book a pseudo-topical flavour, or is it just to pad out the grindingly slow realisation that Kobra are active in China? Far apart from that, I feel that the oppurtunity to stuff the book full of interesting second stringers has been wasted. I can only speak personally, but I find both Sasha and "Terrific" deathly dull at the moment.

The Joker nuclear device thing was taken care of in Robin.

Yes, it was. But long before that, it was mentioned in this context.

It just seems to me youre not into the political angle of the Checkmate title. Its not for everbody, and the way its presented is in a realisitc but ficitonalized setting. Its not suppose to directly mirror anything in the UN Security Council except being recognized by it. Youre not going to get big villains and stuff like that out of the title, and the Sasha/Mr. terrific plot has been in a whopping 4 pages over 5 issues.

I accept that, but the reason I'm giving it a miss is that I believe the title is moving away from its initial strengths. I found it very gripping, in its first few issues, but the last issue bored me, and I sense more of the same. I'm not saying that it is a bad read as such, only that the elements I had enjoyed are being sidelined in favour of elements I disliked. Matter of taste etc etc.

I'm dropping this one: I think the premise is great, but after the initial promise of lots of Alan Scott and Kobra, things have degenerated into a bland Mr Average/Sasha Bored saga. I have come to realise that I am entirely indifferent to both characters.

I hope to look in again, though, when we finally have a solid supervillain for the organisation to thwart.

You're not interested in the Suicide Squad?

Looks great.

Bronze Tiger kicking ass.

Could that be Rick Flag? I know he is meant to be dead but you never know.

If they can re-introduce the Creeper post IC, as if he's never existed prior, then anything's possible.

Bronze Tiger, badass. And I'm betting five bucks it's Rick Flag. Quraqi prison? Been gone for a long time? Definitely Rick Flag.

I'm twofold on this though. Rick Flag had a great death.

Bump, resubscribing to this thread since the Hype pooped out on my subscribed threads. I have to basically start all over again and resubscribe to every thread I regularly go into apparently. :cmad:

But, on topic, the new issue comes out this Wednesday...can't wait to see what goes down with the Suicide Squad...even though I have no idea what the Suicide Squad is...was...or is consisted of. :oldrazz:

Checkmate, great comic, or greatest comic?

its got a great fans base from taking elements from other popular comics
1) AMANDA WALLER (JLU and suicide squad)
2) SASHA (BATMAN, INFINITE CRISIS and OMAC)
3) MR TERRIFIC (JSA)
4) SPOOKS/WEST WING (storyline that combine both shows)
5) SUICIDE SQUAD (suicide squad)
6) KOBRA (a good faceless villians in the shadows

its takes what people love in other comics and combine to make a great series

HELL NO!!!!:cmad: If there's one hope I have is that Amanda ISN'T characterized like the b!+ch in JLU! The Wall was one of my favorite characters in the 90's and she wasn't even a superhero. You know what would've happened if Bats had snuck into Amanda's bathroom like in JLU in the comics? Batman is the one that would have been left shaken after he left, not the other way around. I could stand Question taking some of the twitchy, paranoid, conspiracy theorist issues the JLU has; but I hope they don't bastardize Amanda with the JLU version.

I think the line up for the new Squad is perfect. Icicle II is one of my favourite villains (this was solidified in the JSA Classified arc that spotlighted the Injustice Society) so I'll be looking forward to reading more of him.

I didnt even know Rick Flag was "dead" until someone brought it up a week ago.

Just read the new issue this morning. Definitely some awesome stuff but I'd probably have a better time with this if I had a better knowledge of some of the DC Universe stuff. Don't know much about the Suicide Squad, or the fact that Waller put them together in the past.

But it's still a great book to read and Mirror Master is a bad ass villain, and a coke head too, haha. :wow:

Ah who cares.
I do. I'm a big fan of the original Ostrander run on the Suicide Squad. Rick Flag's tale was told.
