The Official Checkmate thread

This book is so good. I don't mind Waller that much. If she weren't around, there would be no one for Mr. Terrific to eventually pwn. And he is going to pwn her, eventually. Word.

To me this book just gets better and better. We know it's just a matter of time and Waller's going down big time.

I'm kind of disappointed that they're going to make me buy Outsiders again by crossing it over with Checkmate. At least Rucka will be writing parts of every issue. Hopefully he'll minimize Winick's suckitude. I'm looking forward to what Rucka does with Sasha and Nightwing. I'd actually forgotten that Sasha started out as a second-string Batman character around the Murderer/Fugitive era. She's come so far. Also, Joe Bennett as the new regular penciler for Checkmate is awesome. I've loved Bennett's work since his Spider-Man days and he's gotten so much better with every issue.

Anyway, the last issue of Checkmate was good. I thought the Fire story was wrapped up a bit too quickly, though. I thought Rucka would draw the subplot out a little longer and raise the tension between Waller and the rest of the royals primarily through Fire's betrayal, but I guess he's going to raise the tension through the royals' knowing that Waller is working her own agenda but not being able to prove it. That does fit more with the subtle politics of Checkmate.

I wish Alan Scott would come back. :(

Alan Scott as the White King was pretty much what sold me on the concept in the first place. And then Rucka had to pull a fast one and take him off after one arc. Of course by that time I'd already fallen wildly in lust with this series, so I suppose his dastardly plan worked. Fcker.

I would've read Checkmate either way, but still, I think Alan lent a sense of credibility and moral structure to the team. I liked that he was the lone voice of contention on their wetworks, staunchly advocating a minimal violence policy. I thought his older ethics and ideals provided a nice contrast to the younger, more pragmatic royals, and that enriched the political atmosphere of the book. Mr. Terrific isn't bad, but he seems more malleable with his beliefs. He won't kill, but if there are some casualties on an op, he won't make a fuss over it like Alan did, either.

I miss Alan. Mr. T still seems suited to a Bishop than a King to me.

Yeah. Plus, why the hell did Alan have to wear the Checkmate monkey suit while Mr. Terrific just sticks to his stupid costume? I think he'd look oddly dashing in that white suit with a big "T" over his face.

Alan probably did it because he's a sophisticated individual and as a show of good faith in showing while I'm here, I'm not Green Lantern. Or Mr. Terrific's costume is just that badass.

So now we know that Black King is
j'onn j'onzz
it kinda explains a lot... like why he picked Fire as his knight..
And in this weeks issue.. FANTASTIC! Fire and Ice together again! and it was Black King that made sure fire got to see Ice.. she really needed that..

I love how you put in spoiler something that anybody could have seen online, but you plainly say something only someone that has read the comic would know. Nice.

far from everyone read the solicitations.. and i expect people in this thread to read the comic .. and a fire/ice reunion is far from a huge story

Kebab, please never come back to the glory of this thread. Thanks.

Just got into this series (and Outsiders, reading Checkout), and I'm loving it, though the only way I can get through each issue is to read it in front of my computer with Wikipedia pulled up. Not knowing who most of Checkmate or the Outsiders are makes it pretty difficult. :)

You chose the wrong time to get into Outsiders. The series is getting cancelled with the next issue.

If you're enjoying Checkmate through "Checkout," prepare to be blown away by the rest of the issues. "Checkout" was easily the low point of the series so far.
