Hugh is on the cover because it's X-Men and he's Hugh. And outrageously, there are Hugh fans elsewhere on the interwebs griping that he's not front and center this time, despite the fact that he's been front and center a million times and appeared shirtless on the cover of EW's summer preview issue just last year.

Michael Fassbender is on the cover because he's coming off an Oscar nomination and he is arguably a more well-known rising star in the US.

They made an editorial decision. That's all it was. They didn't sit around having a staff meeting about wanting to exclude James McAvoy how much they don't care about Charles Xavier.

More popular how? He hasn't done ONE film so far in which he's the main draw. People went to see Prometheus because of Ridley Scott, not Fassbender. 12 Years a Slave attracted viewers because of the theme, not the actors. I don't see this popularity you're talking about. Even Hugh Jackman spent AGES doing American films and X-Men films to be the popular actor he is today. I know because I followed his career from before X2, and I spent years saying "that guy from X-Men, Wolverine!" because if I said his name people wouldn't know what I was talking about.

Regardless. Doesn't matter if he was the main draw of those films. Fact is he was in them. If Wanted (a pretty big hit) came out a few months ago you'd be damn sure EW would be riding that wave with McAvoy.

Since First Class, Fassy has had quite a few successful films under hit bet, including a more recent extremely high profile hit that earned him an Oscar nomination.

Since First Class, Jennifer Lawrence has become a house hold name on a world wide scale.

Since First Class, McAvoy has done a handful of respectable independent films.


You can kind of see where the priority is going to lie from a purely MARKETING standpoint.

My friend's reaction a few months ago when we were talking about the movie and I mentioned the news that Anna Paquin's scene(s) were cut: "Oh, as long as they don't cut Michael Fassbender, I don't care."

Just because you don't see his popularity, and you don't like him, doesn't mean he isn't popular and that plenty of other people do like him.

Oh, stop. No one here dislikes McAvoy. No one here would have complained if he'd have been on the cover instead. He's just not this time. It's far from the only magazine cover and hardly the only bit of promotion they're doing. Quit with the dramatics.

You're confusing not caring with not acting like the world's greatest injustice just happened because someone wasn't on a magazine cover that a week from now will be replaced with a new cover featuring Spider-Man or Godzilla or something, with the X-Men cover already forgotten about.

Well I don't think that anyone went to see Hunger Games because of Jennifer Lawrence, and both Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle were ensemble movies by a well-regarded director. She hasn't really carried a hit non-franchise film single-handedly either, yet she's considered a star.

Fact is, regardless of whether or not Fassbender was the main draw, he appeared in some recent high-profile films and his performances got attention. If any of James' movies/performances from last two years got similar attention in the US, things would be different.

I didn't say people would complain to see him on a cover. I said people would complain if he was on a cover instead of Hugh or Fassbender, in a group shot with the actors who are supposed to play the main characters in the film.

Okay, one thing has nothing to do with the other. First, I feel sorry for fans when their favorite characters are cut from the film, like Rogue, or underused, like Psylocke. And I don't have ANY kind of problems with fans complaining about any of this, even if other people have problems about me complaining about whatever I'm complaining. Anyway, I never jumped on anyone for complaining about their favorite characters being snubbed or something, because I believe that forums are a way of venting about whatever it is that saddens or angers you. Eventually the pity party is over and you move on, but some people just like to keep nagging and nagging, instead of moving on too. Which is crazy. Like I said, I rarely post here and people kind of know what to expect of me so that they can put me on ignore and I won't bother them, so it's difficult to understand some extreme reactions to whatever I say. Like I'll never understand the extreme reaction to Angamb. Yes, he complained a lot about spoilers or some other absurd thing, but people like him bring diversity to a forum. I like crazy and absurd people, and if you are not being offensive to anyone in particular, then why not? How boring to have so much common sense all the time. How boring to see people liking the same things, or hating the same things.

Second, the magazine cover. Yes, we could have had an EW cover with Blink, Colossus and Iceman and it would have been cool. But realistic? No. So it's not a surprise to guess that the fans of those characters wouldn't expect this to happen, so there wouldn't be complaints. But there's a character called Charles Xavier and even EW magazine says in the article that he has the main arc in the film and then you look at the cover and the actor playing the character isn't there. A realistic expectation that the guy would be featured and then a realistic complaint that he isn't? I guess so.

As far as I know, James was in First Class, which got attention in the US and good reviews. He went to TIFF last year with Jessica Chastain to promote The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, and the film attracted quite a good deal of attention from the press and was bought by Harvey Wenstein. Both James and Jessica's performances were highly praised and there are Oscar-prediction sites already putting their names on their lists of candidates. It's not as if he's a nobody. And he's playing a very important role in DoFP. If Charles Xavier had a minor, non-important role in the film I wouldn't be dumb to say it's absurd a minor character didn't make the cover of an important magazine. But that's not the case.

FC got good reception and was a modest success financially, but that was three years ago and in the meantime none of James' movies made much impact in the US, critically or commercially; Trance was probably his biggest chance but it just didn't catch on. If FC was Fassbender's sole notable project of late, he wouldn't have been on the cover either.

The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby hasn't been released yet, so whether it does much for James' career and profile remains to be seen. Being a double feature, it could be a hard sell; they might be still figuring out whether or not to cut this into a single film instead.

Charles might be playing a very important role in DoFP, but I'd say that for a magazine like EW this fact is not of great importance when it comes to what members of the ensemble to put on the cover.

It is just talk. But it's talk because Lawrence is a huge seller now and everyone knows very well who she is. She has plenty of draw with audiences because of Hunger Games, American Hustle and Silver Linings playbook. DOFP will only add to that list.

She's got the franchises and the Oscar flicks on her list. Really can't get any higher. If she makes 2-3 bad choices that will start to have an effect. But that happens with any star.
