The Official Green Lantern Review Thread - Part 1

I've seen some serious fanboy denial over the years but you sir are in a league of your own.

Whatever, keep doing what you do best. Keep believing in fictitious nonsense. :whatever:

It might make WB a lot more nervous about taking chances on their other heroes.

Which is probably what led to any problems Green Lantern might have. It sounds like WB doesn't have much of an idea about what to do with any of their heroes so they tried to play it as safe as possible. Still I will see the film and make up my own mind on it.

Dude, I said 'BASICALLY'. I hinted at the fact that some people do determine wether they are going to see a movie or not based on reviews from movie critics.

That's true. Especially if you're talking about us. We're all comic nerds, we'll all see the movie. But we're a very small percentage of the theater going crowd.

That may not be the case with the general public. There's a good chance the reviews may impact the movie in some form. How much remains to be seen.

What I find most disturbing about how this movie is being received, is that there's no glaring thing that WB did wrong. It's just a series of things that didn't go as well as they should have. Just bad luck. No mojo.

What are you talking about? The reviews have pointed out plenty of glaringly wrong things with the movie.

A poor script, weak CGI, and a miscast lead aren't bad luck. They're lack of talent and foresight.

Yeah, we will cross that bridge when we get there.

This.

I never understood the whole rotten tomatoe thing, it's a website I have never went to and would never let it determine what movie I would go to or how to feel about a movie. It's almost like some people are sheep who need to follow someone else's opinion because they can't make up their own mind.

It doesn't determine people's personal opinions usually, it's just when the consensus is overwhelmingly one way or the other that it has an impact on people's expectations or interest. If reviews are middling or just decent (TIH's 66% for example), people here will check it out and not have a real expectation of whether it'll be great or terrible since, well, a lot of critics really do have some crappy opinions. But when it just leans SO FAR one way you gotta invest a little faith that the movie will be whichever side of quality it leans toward (20%, even for just 30 reviews is pretty damn low, especially considering that plenty of the negatives are quite negative).

Sounds like Transformers but I think it will be better then Transformers 3, unfortunately it probably won't do as well at the box office since it seems their fans can forgive anything and everything unlike Green Lantern fans who seem to already hate this film before they see it because of others opinions.

transformers fans forgive nothing, they just walk past the theater and hear everyone having a good time then whine about it later = box office domination.

GL fans just listen to critics and whine about it before the fact = so so opening and 60% and more drop in second weekend.

I do think it will open pretty well though.

I'm saying there isn't much that WB did wrong on their part. They put together what should have been a pretty great crew, and a decent cast, and they just had bad luck with it coming together right. They paid respect to the source material, and even had johns on set. I feel bad for them, as I don't think they are responsible for the underwhelming reception, unlike B&R, catwoman, or jonah hex.

Honestly S.A.A.D., there's a difference between Green Lantern and Pirates, and Transformers. Both of those are beloved, established series with a very big fanbase.

Green Lantern, on the other hand, is pretty unknown, even to comic book fans like me, and especially to a lot of the General Audience, and so we'll probably look online to see how it's faring. Seeing how the reviews aren't good, a lot of people will pass.

Now, I'm not saying everyone does this. If they did, this movie would only make like $1000 from people like you.

But it certainly isn't "critic proof"

Seriously, I've seen a lot of stupid ish written on ************** by their stable of high school columnists, but this takes the cake .....

As I write this, Green Lantern currently sits on Rotten Tomatoes at 20% based on 30 reviews. However, 95% of people still want to see the movie according to the site. While the critics often have little impact on the box office takings (just look at the financial success of the panned sequel, The Hangover II) it's bound to have some sort of effect, even if it's just a small one. The question is, has it made you reconsider seeing Green Lantern this coming Friday? Will you now be waiting a couple of weeks to get a better idea of what regular movie-goers make of it, or skipping it altogether? As comic bookfans, do you even care what the critics say about an adaptation such as this one? Here's your chance to vote!

Comparing it to an already established fan base? LOL .... give me a break .... That fan base would go see a sequel if it was just those 4 guys peeing on each other.

I hate how it takes forever for a positive review to trickle in.

Let's also not forget last year's "Clash of The Titans". It had bad reviews, and yet it did fine commercially and it's getting a sequel. So let's wait and see....

I kind of hope it's the same situation this time. But I haven't seen this movie yet.

The overadvertising might lead to a larger than expected turnout.

As much as I wanted this to be a huge success... I really really don't want anyone I know to support this. Go out and see a film that deserves your money.

I blame the script mostly. Martin has to take most of the blame though. He shouldn't have signed on to a movie he didn't know how to make.

Ryan doesn't deserve any of the blame because I know with a good script and direction, he could have pulled off one hell of a Hal Jordan.

But I still haven't seen the movie, and I doubt I'm going to hate it. So... :D

In a strange way I'm kinda glad now it doesn't hit my theatres until August.

Has S.A.A.D. really been on here all day long defending this movie which he has not seen?

How do you know it doesn't deserve it if you haven't seen it?

I cant believe every1 is giving so much credit to these reviews. I find many flaws in what they are saying that i think others would pick up on. In the end it doesnt matter if they like or even undertand the movie its if u like it. It seems like every one is already giving up on this movie when they have no idea what they are talking about. Just wait and see for yourselves before you spout off on it. Same goes for praising it but from what ive seen im looking forward to it

Well, compare the buzz a week before Fast5 came out. The reviews BEFORE Fast5 came out were fairly positive. Most critics basically were positive and said this is a "really dumb but enjoyable film."
For Green lantern the majority of reviews from the preview screenings have had bad buzz. People are not connecting with the film in any level.

Furious 5 already has an established cinematic fan base.
