The Official Green Lantern Review Thread - Part 1

I know. I've been highly skeptical about this movie since the first trailer, but if it had rave WOM and reviews, I'd probably give it the chance. I have no allegiance in a Marvel/DC war (though I always preferred Marvel growing up). Since I never read GL, Thor or CA, I'm cautious about them all. Thor got rave reviews and it was a truly good movie (though I wouldn't say anything spectacular).

But there is a definite rivalry and pissing contest between the fanbases of the three films. If GL opens to awful WOM and/or bad box office, it will be a blood bath in here this weekend.

Could get ugly. SHH mods may want to post something about it.

So, basically... you only like it because it's GL? Even if the movie is terrible. Even if they got a midget to play GL and instead of a ring it was a glowing green codpiece? As long as it's GL it's cool in your book? Are you 12 years old?
:huh: he said he is a fan of green lantern and just got back from seeing it and he feels it exceeding his expectations and feels it is a good movie

you trolling?

Probably right, & pissing contests are pathetic, especially between rivals with aligned interests. :csad:

GL failing isn't a result of not planning in advance, it's simply poor execution.
Oh I agree on GL, it should have stood on its own merits. I was whimpering about the JL project's failings. :csad:

I'm a DC fan first, but if GL is as bad as the reviews say... Marvel deserves the praise.

X-men and Thor were definitely winners.

LMAO

Highfiving, can we get some details? What'd you like about the film? How was Reynolds? Did he and lively have chemistry? Why do you think people are giving this bad reviews based off what you saw?

i guess I should start this off by saying this isn't the sprawling space epic that most people are expecting. But that didn't bug me as much because Secret Origins, which it is based on, didn't have much space stuff either, so I was half-expecting it to be a story about an ordinary (if slightly more flawed than most) man being thrown into an extraordinary, larger than life situation when he's forced to save the universe, along with keeping his personal life in check.

As for the critics, I'm not sure what they've said (besides there headlines/snappy puns and whatnot). I've avoided the reviews because of spoilers, but I can start catching up soon.

The only major gripe I had with the movie, which I don't consider a flaw, just something I would have preferred. The first and biggest of which was the smaller screentime that the other Lanterns had. I'd say Tomar-Re had the biggest part of the non-humans, mostly since he's the narrator. Sinestro is second most, with more scenes in person than Tomar. Then Abin and Kilowog I'd say are about even in screentime.

There effects weren't perfect in a few areas, but that's never really bothered me. I know what was intended to be on the screen, even if it wasn't quite fully ironed out, no big deal. The dialogue is clunky in some places, such as the way Kilowog talked to Hal, not that the dialogue was bad, but the transition between statements seemed a bit off.

Reynolds, I thought he was great. Nothing groundbreaking, but you'd be a very bitter person if you expected everything to be groundbreaking. I thought he was the Hal Jordan I loved for the comics. Cocky, a bit of an ass, great at what he's passionate about but a ****-up at everything else. Until he has to use his ring to save the world. I thought he and Carol had chemistry, not in the common sense. But the *****y girl who is buried 6 feet deep in her job crushing on the irresponsible bad boy kind of way.

I thought Lively did her role a justice, didn't look bad while doing it either. She wasn't the Carol I know from the comics, but a Carol I'm happy to have in the movie.

Mark Strong, he made his presence known in what little screen time he had. The intensity boiling within him made me giddy to see him go sour. The resisting the wishes of the Guardians at every opportunity he could get away with. Geoffrey Rush gave Tomar-Re a whole new dimension, some of his facial movements even reminded me of Rush. He was a warm and inviting mentor. Michael Clarke Duncan wasn't used as much as I would have liked, as I already said. But he suited the character and I loved hearing his voice come from Kilowog.

I think Morrison, Robbins, Bassett, and the guy that played Tom did their parts the way they should have. The only actors I didn't care for were the ones that played Hal's family, Martin aside. The scene with Jason (his nephew) was the only scene time I think most of it fell flat.

Now, the one I thought stole the show, well, not necessarily stole the show. I still think this movie belonged to Ryan Reynolds and Mark Strong The one that surprised me the most. Peter Sarsgaard. I actually greatly preferred this Hector to the comics version. The loneliness on his face during his introduction scene. The only time we get to see him happy is when talking to Carol, who he loves, and when he's chosen to perform the autopsy on the world's first Alien life form. The rest of the time it's a constant of disappointment in himself and a complete lack of confidence. After getting infected his character becomes something out of an old monster movie and if you've seen me talk about The Incredible Hulk, you know I love similarities to monster movies.

Now, the way I see it, this may not (will not) be everyone else's view of this. But everything fell into the exact right place for me. If there's anything else you'd like to know, feel free to ask and I'll happily answer. Also, thank you if you made it all the way through this.

Why is troll the first thing you guy's resort to on here? Geez.

No, I was just curious as to his train of thought. Sue me.

Alright. Here's my review for anyone interested in reading. If you have any other questions that I maybe didn't cover in the review, just ask me and I'll do my best to answer it. Green Lantern Review

No. You said me liking it was biased... Like I'm only allowed to enjoy the movie if I'm not a fan of the comics.

Thanks for the detailed response, Highfiving. What can you tell us parallax, the guardians, and the action scenes? How were the constructs? Did you see John Stewart?

Well Fox deserves the praise for Xmen but it's hard to argue either way. I just can't believe WB have come up so short with this, they knew DC fans were putting their collective hopes into this film not just for GL but for FL, WW, AM, hell even JL.

I know that I haven't seen the whole movie yet, but I think that the good thing about the movie is that it leaves you wanting more in terms of the cosmic side. It's better than getting numb because of a bunch of cosmic stuff that packed inside the movie.

How do the Guardians of the Universe sound when they talking HighFivingMF? Do the voices sound good and fit them?

I may have missed it, but I was keeping an eye out. I didn't even see Nick Jones, much less a mention of him being John Stewart. Maybe his scene was cut? I don't know.

If you've watched all the clips, sadly, you've seen most of the constructs. If not there are some cool ones in store for you. A battle between Sinestro and Hal during his training that's a cool construct vs. construct dynamic that, if you're anything like me, will get you even more excited for a sequel.

Parallax didn't speak much. When he did it's usually cliche evil entity lines, but Mr. Krabs sounded extremely badass while doing them. If that last sentence didn't make sense, the actor who voices Mr. Krabs in Spongebob Squarepants is also voicing Parallax. Watching him eat the souls of people is rather creepy too.

The Guardians aren't used much. They get about 3 scenes, they suffer from the CG-mouth syndrome that most CG characters do, but like I said, imperfections in the effects don't bother me that much. They're very quiet when being questioned but bossy when giving orders. They're secretive, which makes me hope we get The Manhunters.

The action was great, especially toward the climax with Parallax. It's mostly wham-bam quick stuff with Hal thinking up constructs on the fly as Parallax hurdles toward him.

The voices fit, they sound old, grumpy, and British. I don't think they were any actor in particular. I may have recognized the voices, but they weren't very unique voices like Brown, Duncan, or Rush.

The one constant I've noticed with the reviews is that people are complaining about different things.

How much time doe's the movie spend in space in total?

How many action bits are there?

What? Do the Guardians of the Universes' mouth look weird when they talk (Tron Legacy weird, Clu)?

Like usual CG characters. I'd compare it more to an entirely animated movie where they aren't supposed to look like real humans. Their mouths move more like the characters in Toy Story 3, but it's much less creepy than Tron because it's not meant to look like a real person, so it isn't as strange.

Totally British or slightly British?

The power rings don't talk at all, do they?

Why are you guys asking questions like that when the movie comes out in two days?

Totally British or slightly British?

Geoffrey Rush levels, but less friendly and sometimes more feminine (for the female Guardians). They're pretty much exactly what most would expect the Guardians to sound like I think.
