Yup. Van Wilder with a power ring. I hope they drop him from Deadpool and go with someone like Seann William Scott.

Maybe a poor box office showing for GL will do it? :woot:
But I think GL will perform well. Kids will flock to see it in masses.

Just got back... As you know... I'm a big fan of Green Lantern... But I came out of this movie just feeling...

SO UNBELIEVABLY ****ING PUMPED! I don't understand these reviews. It just... Wow. So be careful guys and don't cut your feet on the shards of my shattered expectations. Not that the expectations weren't already high.

I am in the exact same boat as you. I'm a huge GL fan (GL is what got me into DC), and the movie exceeded my expectations (which were already high because I loved the trailers so much). I don't understand the hate. Sometimes I just think that the whole concept a ring powered by willpower that creates constructs might not be appealing to most film critics.

The guy said "If they can just lighten up a little." I think you're missing his point. GL was never going to be some dark-ass movie. I'm sure it's been made for all ages. I hope it's good, I hope it is a lot of fun, guess I'll find out this weekend!

Where did I say Green Lantern should be dark? Or imply that it shouldn't be accessible to people of all ages? I said it should be good enough to meet fans of the comic's expectations. What the Bleeding Cool reviewer seemed to be implying, though, was that any fan of the source material who doesn't find the film entertaining needs to "lighten up," which sounds pretty sanctimonious to me. Heaven forbid people want the film representing their favorite superhero or comic book to be great instead of passable.

I will say that having been on this forum for several years and lurking a bit before that the dialogue in this thread has followed almost the exact same course as the Superman Returns, Ghost Rider, and Hulk boards to name a few.

I especially love seeing the "It can't fail its X" type of comments that I always see accompanied by "This movie is critic proof!" mentality.

Maybe his scene was deleted. Because G'Hu also had a voice actor hired, but had no lines.

My favorite part was-

Obviously, the post-credits scene. But I also liked all of the training and Hal's driving scene, not sure why, but it felt like a great introduction to the character.

There was a little kid a few rows back at my screening that was OBSESSED with Hector. He understood everything, but whenever Hector did something he'd ask his Mom "Does he have to see what's wrong with him?" "He gets to look inside the alien?" "Can that really happen?" I thought it was cute.

Could you PM me the scene description?

Wow. The editor for Green Lantern is the director of Star Trek Nemesis... eek

...he was also the editor of Superman: The Movie, my friend...and Casino Royale...Baird has a reputation as one of the best editors in the biz. (Directing, can't say so much...)

:word:

I liked Green Lantern, saw tonight at a special screening at the Arclight in Hollywood. The critics tore it apart, but what did they expect from a fantasy comic book film set in space. Parts were a little hokey, the romance did feel a little ehh, but that's expected. The film doesn't take itself seriously, as it shouldn't. If you're going to see the Oscar award winning performances of a lifetime then stay home, if you want to escape reality with 3D glasses and have a fun time at a movie then GO!

The last 20-30 minutes were straight up some Green Lantern comics stuff. Great fight scene for a fantasy/space DC film. In the end you got what you wanted if you are a GL fan. I'd go see a sequel, but I love flicks like this.

Fun and well-made are not mutually exclusive.

Star Wars is "goofy sci-fi fantasy" and also one of the greatest films ever made.

How was the 3D at Arclight? Seeing it there tomorrow actually, small world.

Also hearing positives from fans and non-critics to me is the bigger indicator, all the reviews yesterday were saying it was a fun ride. Don't think much changed from yesterday to today.

ALSO for those who saw it, with the above in mind, what was the crowd's reaction and aura of the room upon leaving?

For those who have seen this movie how is Mark Strong as Sinestro

I like how all the positive fan reviews amount to, "I liked it, just don't go in expecting something great"

That sure gets me HYPED!

Imagine Iron Man coming out three weeks after X-Men:First Class or The Dark Knight. :cwink: That's what it sounds like to me, just went to IMDB - found one person who didn't like it, another said he was with a crowd that applauded. That's why I'm interested in crowd reports here, because that'll be the biggest indicator.

There is more to Reynolds than Van Wilder. Going by reviews Reynolds did the best he could do. It's the writing, the script that has let him down here.

And Reynolds is perfect for Deadpool. The script is tailor made for him.

It's funny seeing people turn on Reynolds because this movie turned out to be a steaming pile. Even though pretty much every critic so far hasn't really had a bad word to say about him.

Totally agree. People sitting by me in the theater who were unfamiliar with teh comics didn't like it because they thought it required too much of a stretch of the imagination, but honestly, if you watched the trailers or knew anything about green lantern at all, what else did you expect?

"What did they expect from a fantasy comic book film set in space"

Why do people always troy this kinda excuse out? So, because it's a fantasy comic book film is space, it gets a free pass even if it's a steaming pile?

I'm not one to let critics decide whether i'll watch a movie. But this is pretty much universally panned. If the reviews were mixed then i'd still see it. But with reviews like this it makes me not want to waste my money.

I really think critics are losing their touch. Sometimes, they are dead right about a film and sometimes they're not. It's all a matter of opinion, which everyone has.

It's like I said: it's all a matter of opinion. If people go into GL wanting to hate it, they'll hate it even if it's a decent film.

And Rotten Tomatoes and MetaCritic aren't always a good indication of good movies. I mean, I enjoyed POTC 4 (which got a 33% "rotten" rating at RT) but didn't really care for an Oscar bait film like The King's Speech (which got a 95 "fresh"). I liked the latter, but didn't get the huge hoopla and Oscar campaign.

I haven't seen Pirates 4. But if it's anything like Pirates 3, I'll probably hate it. ;)

As for The King's Speech, it was a nice little biopic that got blown up in hype for a few reasons--Firth's superb performance, it being about British royalty, it being about British royalty overcoming a disability through the strength of the human spirit and a it being about British royalty overcoming a disability through the strength of the human spirit during WWII.

That's like Oscar catnip. With Harvey Weinstein at the helm of campaigning (the man who made the Academy think The English Patient was better than Fargo and Shakespeare in Love was better than Saving Private Ryan) it got overhyped and overrated ad nauseum. But it worked, as Weinstein got another Best Picture and, even more absurdly, Best Director on his belt.

Mind you, I think that either The Social Network or Black Swan should have won. At least even Inception. So, that's just me.

I can just hear the chorus of 'well what did you expect?' starting to get louder. It's really not that much to ask for something well made, no-ones wanting Oscars, just a well made movie.

It doesn't get a free pass, it has some minor flaws, but it is leagues ahead of real steaming piles of poo like Wolverine. I saw it, and was thoroughly entertained the entire time. How many of you have actually seen it for yourselves?

I haven't. But like I said, if the movie was getting average reviews, i'd give it the benefit of the doubt.

But it's not, it's getting slaughtered. Why would that inspire confidence and why would I want to spend my money on something like that.

Don't spend your money on it. Just don't criticize a film you haven't seen.
