The Official Green Lantern Review Thread - Part 4

I think the film would have loved to had the chance to have it's audience make up their own mind about it upon viewing, but reviewers kinda put a stop to that. Shouting don't see this film because it didn't entertain me.

franchise starters need good reviews
I rarely ever go by what a reviewer says to see a film in the first place.
IF I read reviews it'd be by the fans. Granted many of you aren't happy with it but your opinion is there for me to see what to look for.

From MTV:
To put the numbers in perspective, fewer people saw "Green Lantern" on opening weekend than the film adaptations of lesser known superheroes like "Daredevil" and "Ghost Rider."

Well that's depressing. I'm really disappointed that WB couldn't produce a better movie. It was decent, but you need more than "decent" when you're trying to kick-start a new franchise. As a comics fan of both DC and Marvel, I want this to succeed so that we get new stories down the line, but at the same time I don't want people to support mediocre efforts. Studios need to be pressured to do better.

News outlets are starting to question whether GL's failure at the box office (or perceived failure) is the beginning of the end for the comic movie boom :(

Looks like Cap's box office numbers just gained more importance.

Don't buy into that. Cap's numbers are no more important now than they were prior to the release of Green Lantern. This film won't be a critical success, but it still has a chance to be a commercial success. Critics tore into The Hangover II and that walked away with a healthy $488 million gross (off of an $80 million budget). Green Lantern won't walk away with that kind of budget-to-gross ratio, but if Superman Returns could hurdle the gap between it's budget and profitability, then I see no real reason why Green Lantern cannot do the same.

This fan is most disappointing to comic fans, but for the average movie goer, this film is filled with snappy one liners, mostly good looking special effects (Hal's suit being the glaring exception) and a few solid scenes of action and adventure. $52 million may not have matched Thor ($67 million) or exceeded First Class (which made $55 million on its opening weekend but has long since pulled into profitability) but those are strong numbers. This isn't like when The Spirit debuted and mustered $6 million and 9th place on opening weekend. Green Lantern is number one right now. It will get knocked down to number two by Cars next weekend, and number three the following week by Tansformers, but it will remain fairly healthy. There is always the overseas market.

As for the idea that the comic book movie is now going bust, I really doubt it. This genre has endured legitimate box office failures such as The Phantom, Jonah Hex, The Spirit etc.. None of those has harmed this genre. All of these detractors will change their tune next year once the new Batman film comes around and being into comic movies is trendy once more. Comic book movies are the new action movie. Gone are the days of Arnold and Dolph. That leaves a cultural void to be filled. Super hero films seem to be doing a bang up job of filling that void.

I don't think we're gonna see much health in its box office. It's percentile drop just over opening weekend from day to day was pretty steep. It's not all that exciting over seas either so far. I'm guessing a 65% drop on week 2. It'll be lucky to cross 200 million domestically. Far from a flop, but I'd say we should stow any sequel hopes.

Some are predicting that GL will be sliding to the 3rd spot next week behind Cars2 and Bad Teacher. On top of that TF3 comes out in 9 days, forget bad legs GL will not have any legs at the boxoffice.

200 mil domestic? there is no way in hell it crosses 200 mil domestically, heck I'll be surprised if it reaches 150

All our hope lies in Superman now. If that is a success, wait a couple or few more years for another DC hero. Like the Flash possibily. If Superman fails, get ready for God knows how long of more Batman films.

Yea, MoS has gotta pull out all the stops. I'm 100% positive Snyder can deliver the spectacle needed. But then, you need more than that.

For those that thought the film was badly edited ,
at what point did you start to notice it ?
Seeing the film on Saturday.

I saw the movie twice this weekend..I enjoyed parts of the movie while others no so much.

Scenes with carol and hal brought the pace of the movie down for me

If you wanted a "main" villian then just have parallax, there was no need to have hector's role.... useless.

The training with kilowog and sinestro should have been much much longer. Like as in the movie "training day" have kilowog train him at first then let sinestro take over and show him the ropes on what it takes to harness the rings power. That what I wanted to see

There should have been more time on Oa insted of earth

I wanted to see more of sinestro and his resentment towards hal, and the guardians...flesh him out more, because we all know he's going to have the yellow ring of fear. Make his fall from grace painful

I had the same problem with parallax as I did with galactus in FF2. Parrallax is not a damned storm cloud

One guy in another thread mentioned the lack of establishing shots: it cut from interior to interior thus confusing me momentarily.

Again that is an intellectually dishonest argument comparing GL to the established cinematic franchises of both Superman and The Hangover. It's apples and oranges. It didn't matter how badly people tore into The Hangover sequel, it had such a rabid following that people were gonna check it out regardless.

I don't understand why the book of Oa didn't make it into the movie.

Not sure your comparisons hold here. The Spirit, Phantom, Jonah Hex...those aren't what analysts consider superhero movies. GL and X:FC should--and will--get compared to things like Thor, Cap, and Batman.

you are? after sucker punch and watchmen* (which I thought was frigging awful) I am very worried for superman.

for the record I thought the first 20 minutes of watchmen was pitch perfect and then the movie decends into a mess, by the time the movie got to possible 'THE' WORST choice for a song during a scene ever (hallelujah during a sex scene ) I was ready to leave the cinema.

By spectacle, I mean action scenes, the visuals. Snyder has a great eye for visuals and can frame a great action scene.

But like I said, there obviously needs to be more than that. So we'll see.

For the record, I like the Directors Cut of Watchmen.

I haven't seen Sucker Punch, but after the beating he took, the dude's gonna be putting his absolute best foot forward on Man of Steel. I don't think he's a hack, and I'm totally rooting for him to knock it out of the park. If nothing else, we know the man knows how to shoot a red cape beautifully. :oldrazz:

As far as Watchmen is concerned, I thought it was fantastic (practical make up and Carla Gugino aside). I can't imagine a better on screen rendering of Dr. Manhattan, my favorite comic book superhero. That origin sequence is absolutely sublime.

I don't understand why the book of Oa didn't make it into the movie.

Honestly I think a "book" like that could have really pushed the camp level. I like how they handled that in First flight; the central battery acted as the book.

What I don't get are how some scenes that would have been fan GOLD were cut (even though they were filmed/planned): Sinestro pulling a power battery out of a pocket dimension, Parallax's insect form, the sentient ring, Hector and the security guards/DEO agents.... all wasted for a mid-credits scene

Yea, certain parts of Watchmen were just genius. I loved the Comedians funeral, and how it showed each of their memories of him. Loved the way it was edited and structured there. And of course, Dr M's origin was just perfect.

Wait, so they really did threw all of those cool bits out the window all because of an after credits scene? :wow:

Is it possible if you can cook up a precise list of all the stuff that was suppose to make it into the movie? Like the whole kitten caboodle? Crap, I recently realized that you meant Parallax's true form and not it's other form before it turned into a big scary looking space creature. Oops.
