The Official Green Lantern Review Thread - Part 4

There are two new things that I realized today and that I like about the movie, Hal quits his superhero job not once, but twice. Normally superheroes in comic book movies quit once, when they choose to. Second, Hal and Hector lying to each other about the exchanging of the power ring and Carol. Imo, those are refreshing moments and great 'twists' in a comic book movie.

Another refreshing moment that I like is when Hector falls and lays next to Hal after he talked to him while he (Hal) was on the ground. I didn't think that Hector would collapse on the ground.

I saw the movie last Friday, personally I enjoyed it and am somewhat disheartened by all the negative press its been getting. Its not the best super-hero movie ever, but its decent for what it is. I hope it does well enough for DC/WB to continue to make movies about heros other then Bats & supes.

Personally, I think they should have gone with Sinestro being the villain for this film after having seen it. I mean the Parallax and Hector were just weak villains when it came to characterizations and executions.

They could have easily gone down the route of having Sinestro's journey towards villainy within the duration of one film happen in the same way that they did with Harvey Dent/Two face for TDK.

And in regards to Hal Jordan's character; his emotional problem and interior obstacles felt so forced in face for me and didn't off as natural. The fact that they had Carol be the one to give him a speech that ended up in him overcoming a emotional problem that he's had since his childhood was such a cliche.

If anything, the origin for Hal has been better handled in animated films like in New Frontier and First Light.

Heck, if they had changed Hal's main problem towards being the one used in New Frontier, then it would have made things better.

And I agree with others that the film should have taken more in space, with us seeing Hal and the GL as intergalactic investigators as well instead of just seeing them flying around in space and shooting their rings into the sky.

Finally saw this.
Though it misses a lot of opportunities and it has some gawd awful transitions
it was pretty good.

I'd say it's a tad above superman returns for the simple reason that it used the source material fairly well. I even liked Reynolds performance and I was dead set against it from the start. The constructs were still lame though.

Another issue that I had is that I didn't really get the sense that the GL Corps were these well known Peace keepers throughout the universe.

All we saw of them was mainly a rally that Sinestro did with the corps, followed by Hal's montage training.

We should have actually seen them doing their own line of work that wasn't related to the Parallax situation in order to get a better idea of what their jobs really entailed.

So I watched some of the movie today and wonder if Hector sat in the chair with the wheels because he was in pain. Doe's anyone have the answer to this?
So, you left the theater early? Or....

...oops! :wow:

;)

Why else would he sit in the wheelchair?

I work at the movie theater, hence why I got a chance to see some of it yesterday. :whatever:

Are you stationed at the front of GL's entrance?

Seriously, how many times have you watched it so far?

Maybe because of his infamous Charles Xavier impersonation? He can even do the telepath bit :D

LOL what irked me about that scene was how totally unnecessary it was. If his telekinetic powers are so strong he shouldn't have any problems carrying his own weight around

I like his ideas. I know it seems highly unlikely that we'll get a sequel right now, but if it does happen, they should listen to him. I also think his review of the movie was pretty spot-on... an overall good film that works as an intro but doesn't quite live up to its full potential.

That pretty much hits the nail on the head IMO.

Also, the CinemaScore notation, I think it's relevant to back that up with the average user score on Yahoo! Movies as well. B+.

"The public" that has been referenced so often by the film's detractors are connecting with Green Lantern, those that are going to see it. It's critics and their often overblown bashing of the film that keep audiences away. And yes, that means people who might actually enjoy the film if they didn't give so much weight to a critic's review. I can't count the number of films that I've actually enjoyed that critics hated.

Care to elaborate?

It's always been depicted that when Abin Sur removes his ring and it either searches for Hal or Hal puts it on, Abin Sur's uniform stays on his body. There have been numerous instances of this in comics and animation.

Abin Sur's uniform usually stays in place until the ring is fully bonded with Hal.

Obviously you have something wrong with what you perceive as a movie critic; maybe now more than ever since so many didn't like this film.

You don't have to go far to see what audiences think about the film:

Rotten Tomatoes User Ratings - 74,624 voted w/ 61% approval. 3.5/5 average... which is pretty much the critics' consensus. Most reviews have it as a 2.5 - 3.5 rating (or C - B minus), which is on par with the general audience perception.

Box office drops:

Friday to Saturday: 22%

Sat to Sun: 9.4%

Sun to Mon:
66.1%

Between this and Sinetro forming & throwing a shield, to Hal Jordan doing some Tony Stark impression, GL is filled with alot of Easter Eggs. :cwink:

You can pretend all you want, but clearly this isn't connecting the way WB wanted. It's okay to admit it.

Yep, facts definitely deserve the ol' eye roll. Let's go back to unfounded opinions! That's science!

Oh those pesky facts. LOL

Notice how that poster up there didn't even mention there were only 1,362 user votes on Yahoo. But it's "connecting" right? I guess that small a sampling size is more efficient than the 70,000+ on RT ..... wait for it ..... :whatever:

Denial can be blinding.

I'm used to it by now. I actually had a guy on my site tell me to "stop backing up my statements with facts" two days ago.

I... don't even know how to respond to that
