The Official Green Lantern Review Thread - Part 5

I dont really care for these details. It was still in the performance, the plane crashed, he didnt look scared, he transmitted a sense calmness.

That being too nittpicky to me.

Anything that isn't a positive sentiment is nitpicking to you.

ok, just saw the film, had some opinions.

1)it's not a bad movie
2)a little too much focus on Hector
3)The soundtrack was pathetic, and took a large chunk of the enjoyability out of the film
4)the opening prologue is too quick, they should deliver that information in a more pleasing manner
5)a little too much focus on the relationship stuff too

otherwise a fairly solid flick. This felt like a Marvel movie more than a DC movie. The DC movies have always tried to keep things a little more deep, while Marvel films have always been shallower (although that's not the word I'm looking for). Lighter and funnier for the marvel films. DC, between Batman and SR (the tone of the film atleast), they seemed to have set up a real world, in which these over powered characters live.

I dunno what I'm trying to get at... just that GL felt more like a marvel than a DC film.

I like the idea of Angela Basset as Amanda Waller, and I suspect she will be the Justice League cameo set up for films to come. DC's counterpart to Marvel's Colson.
In the end, I think had they reduced some of the focus on the pathetic mad scientist and relationship stuff slightly, and brought the speed and jumpiness of the opening and closing arcs down a little, I'd have been perfectly happy with this film. And again, FOR PETE'S SAKE, get a real music scribe to write a proper soundtrack!!!!!!!(another trait of marvel films that this DC movie is displaying)

7.5/10, where 10 is impossible to reach.

No. This did not "feel" like just any Marvel film. Perhaps a FF4 maybe, but not your Iron Man, Thor, etc ....

just saw the movie. I liked it. some continuity errors but they weren't big enough to draw away from the enjoyability of it. the action was good. I liked the little Capt America knod during the Kilowog training scene.

I only saw it once. So could you please name those continuity errors that you saw?

Anyways, after seeing the polls in here.....48 people in here thinks it's great, 73 thought it was average, and 47 people thinks it sucks.

So at worst, this movie is average.

Not bad :cwink:

I think he used the wrong word. What I think he means is that it felt like DC trying to create a Marvel film. They're reacting to Marvel instead of creating and sticking to their own plan. That's one of (the many) reasons GL didn't cut it.

That's not exactly a good thing when you consider that the majority thinks the same of XO:W.

I'd put it with FF, both hulk movies, the spiderman followup films and Thor (definately not on the same level as Xmen, the first spiderman or Ironmen) ... basically like a second string Marvel movie. Which IMO, is where this movie should be... GL is a second stringer in my books, when considering movie properties(he's not a second stringer really, but I'll always put him a step behind Bats, Supes and WW). I've always found the Marvel movies to be uninspiring. Fun to watch and really entertaining. But they've always lacked the serious take on the character they are portraying that DC movies have done or attempted to do. I come out of Batman wanting to be batman... not so much for this movie.

I guess my final thought is that the movie is not worth the 200 mil investment they made. Could have been simplified and cheapened a little, and still held the same level of quality.

yeah, that's kind of it. DC has always tried to be a less light hearted than the marvel films. When you look at BB, TDK and even SR, they are all rather dark, when compared to any of the marvel properties. The tone of the two movie universes is different. But GL feels like it's trying to mimic the Marvel tone of movies, rather than stick with the DC theme.

it's kind of hard to put into words. But there is a clear difference between the Marvel and DC films... and GL feels like it fits more in the Marvel family of films than the DC.

I think what grinds my gears about DC films, is that the bloody cartoons have done it so f'n well. Why do they have so much trouble building live action movies? I mean they could literally just steal stories directly from the TAS's and Justice League, word for word, and make better films that they have been outputting (apart from the current batman franchise)

one last thing, a question for those in the know: is GL part of the Nolanverse?

Well if you're going to lump in the Ghost Rider, FF and other other non-Marvel Studios films you should also factor in Batman and Robin, Batman Forever, Superman III and Superman IV. Those were all DC films and they didn't have to luxury to say another studio handled their properties poorly

How do Batman and Superman "fall in line?" Are you implying that those two share a movie universe?

I'm guessing he thinks because Nolan is involved with Man of Steel means they are the same universe. But he has limited control of Superman, it would be more apt to call a combined universe the "Goyerverse" as he writes for both films.

Call it whatever you want, they are still in their own respective universes for the films. That's already been confirmed by Nolan/Snyder and Co

I know, I was just saying, "Nolanverse" would be an inaccurate term for a hypothetical combined movie universe.

he is executive producer on MOS, it would seem like a logical conclusion.

well, I don't include the past franchises of DC movies, because they are done. I'm talking about this current generation of films.

and don't touch SIII, it rules! The awesome and hilarious opening sequence, the chemical plant rescue, bizarro superman causing havoc and getting wasted, Clark Kent vs. Bizarro. They even had a good version of Brainiac, for the mid 80s. SIII had many of my favorite live action superman sequences.

He's a producer, not an executive producer. Big difference.

And they've already said that Batman and Superman won't be sharing a world. They are self contained.

C'mon. That means you're being selective just to prove your point, completely bias.

But following your train of thought for argument's sake, Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four, Daredevil and Spider-Man are all "done" as well since they're under the reboot umbrella.

Quick question, wasn't Cannon Films in charge of Superman IV?
