I don't really buy the notion that you cannot do both. Like I said, they got away with it the first time around. But my personal general rule is "the sequel should have a deeper/more interesting plot as well."

Empire Strikes Back has a pretty bare-bones plot, but goes much deeper into the characters and is a better film than Star Wars (IMO) because of it.

Plot was about the least important thing in the first Guardians. Coherent character arcs are the number one thing I want out of this film.

(Poor pacing is a different matter, though. The first one didn't have much of a lag at all. Curious to see how this film handles that.)

I never said you couldn't do both. That wasn't my point. My point was that there is a lot of substance in GotG. It is the character work, both overt and subtle.

I could see this landing in the mid-70's, which I'd be perfectly fine with. It's pretty much guaranteed to be fresh at this point.

Agreed, another Certified Fresh movie for Marvel. Won't land in the 90's, might not even stay in the 80's. But another solid movie nonetheless from what I'm reading.

These Rotten Tomato threads are always so entertaining and mind-blowing guys. So...thank you :D

Definitely confident this is going to end up fresh- maybe even Certified Fresh. I'm thinking at least 80%.

This had potential to do a lot worse than the first film, even though most expected it to do at least slightly worse. Duplicating that kind of 'freshness' (and not RT freshness lol) wasn't likely to happen but it will be interesting to see where it finished up.

I'm a bit disappointed by these reviews, but it still sounds like it'll be a fun movie. I definitely won't like it as much as the first one though; the first movie is my favorite CBM.

I figure it'll be low to mid '80s on RT when the reviews are finished.

Looks like it could end up at the low 80s, not bad.

Don't know if his review has been added on RT but this is kinda interesting

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2: probably my favorite Marvel movie (major Hellboy 2 vibes!), and I thought the 1st one was garbage. what a world!

Tbh as long as it's certified fresh I would be happy.

heh reading some of the responses in here, sounds like you guys are taking bets RT turnout lol

Yes, I was about to bring up this tweet, too. I don't necessarily tend to agree with Ehrlich on everything (I like the MCU much more than him, that's for sure, and love the first GOTG), but I definitely consider him a legit critic. Very interesting, indeed. I feel this will be a very weird movie that's not everyone's cup of tea, but will find a lot of passionate defenders. Also don't see it falling below 70% and even the 80's are quite possible (if you look at reviews from the same critics, it's faring a bit better than Ant-Man). We'll see, but I'm quite confidente I'll end up loving it. Gunn's style is my cup of tea, after all.

according to Harloff Drax is nothing more than a punchline in vol #2:csad:

That's all he was in Vol 1 as well. Got his ass handed to him by Ronan and was joke fodder the rest of the time.

Collider people scores out of 10:

Perri: 8
Denniz Tzeng: 7.8
Mark Ellis: 7.4
Campea: 7
Harloff: 5.5

Schnepp: 8.5/10

From the oh-so-serious look on Harloff's face in the video, I could tell his review would be negative before I heard it. The dude looked like he just watched Schindler's List or some other crushing tragedy. (I loved Schindler's List, btw.) He didn't like GOTG so his opinion on vol. 2 isn't shocking.

Harloff has been dogging on Marvel for a while now, ever since Iron Man 3. He nitpicked DS and CW to death.

Overall though, underwhelmed by this critic response, thought Gunn had another 90% RT for us.

Reviews seem fairly good, just a step below the first which isn't too bad might I add. Percentage will probably go down a bit though.

Of course if this a DC films was getting these kinds of reviews, we'd all be super-excited though. Ha!

It will be fresh no doubt about it.

I thought Vol. 2 was/is better than Vol. 1 and surprisingly a lot more entertaining. They made poop and dick jokes that were actually funny.

From what I have heard it sounds like it's good but not as good as the first. Also sounds like it suffers from some pacing issues

Volume 1 is a better paced film but with Vol. 2 being so entertaining, the pacing is a superfluous flaw.

I honestly liked but didn't love Vol 1. Thought it was a little rushed and Quill and Rocket were the only ones that got an arc. So if this is a little different, fine by me. The run time does make me nervous as I prefer tighter storyline.

Oh if Wonder Woman got this exact response, DC and its fanboys would be ecstatic. Us Marvel fans are way too spoiled.
