X-Men The Official MCU X-Men News and Discussion Thread

I'm just curious since they now have the X-men in the MCU, they could actually powerup Rogue. She can steal Captain Marvel's power. We could see the powered up version of Rogue flying around with super strength.

No. Just no.

^ but, she just have them, as her powers? or do they explain where they came from?

They’ll probably have powered Rogue after having the depowered version through the Fox films. Most importantly give her the sassy personality we’ve been missing!

She can just have them from the start. Unless they really want her to have that specific storyline with Carol Danvers? Also she can just borrow Storm's flying ability and the super strength of Colossus and Beast.

Since both characters have had movies showing their powers, it would be easy to explain to a general audience now. The only thing that needs explanation is why Carol and Rogue would fight in the first place. There hasn't been any movie context to show Rogue as a villain. A real simple throwaway to explain a powerup is that Carol was trying to save Rogue. So it could just be an accident, no need to explain a fight between them. Maybe Rogue was injured and Carol happens upon her. While trying to rescue Rogue she accidentally makes contact with her skin. Rogue absorbs Carol's power and is given flight and super strength. But Rogue won't have any light around her like Carol does. Carol can be taken in by the X-men where Beast tries to help her, or she can be taken off-world. Any Kree tech could probably bring her back. Carol's coma can be as short or long as needed until they make another movie that requires the character. The main problem is if Carol loses her memory again like in the first movie, that would be very redundant. So maybe she keeps her memory.

Among all the origin changes that have been made in the MCU, why the hell can't you let go of Rogue stealing Carol's powers?

Probably because people now know who both characters are. They have both had live action versions so no reading is required. They are finally in the same Universe, and they are redoing the X-men. Take your pick. Also why not another version of Rogue instead of the same one we saw. The Rogue I grew up reading about and watching in animated form was the more powerful one. So that is the Rogue I knew first and have yet to see in live action.

not to mention that 95% of X-Men fans and Marvel comics fans want that Rogue.
Feige knows their fanbase, they wont give them a more boring version than the most popular one (X-Men TAS, that is, curiously, returning next year)

Still no explaining why she has to depower Carol for her to get her other powers. Why does being a Rogue fan trump being a Carol fan?

The issue is not the powers, but that people want them to directly to come from Carol. Which, given the power set she has now, vs what she had back then, makes no goddamn sense. You only want to take some of her powers, not all of it? Gotta overcomplicate how the process works to get your precious powers?

It all boils down to what is going to drive me crazy over the next few years. Fans more obsessed with trivial things as compared to the core of the story. Which will allow Feige and Iger to get away with stripping the core of the X-men's message.

a conflict with Carol and Rogue is sooo interesting, rich, complex, and something undone to date on a cbm, and taking into account that The Marvels flopped (sadly) something a comic accurate storyline, whenever that could happen (movie, show, or another spinoff), Id bet money most fans and general audience would loose their minds seeing that plot/subpot. It would just make the X-Men/Avengers relationship richer and complex, something that is always a plus.

And if those rumours of a possible brotherhood movie are true, what an epic and daring moment

I won't try to convince you of anything, but I don't think it's fair to call it trivial or "just how Rogue gets her powers".

If there's any essence they should capture is that Rogue has a tragic origin story.

And one of the reasons why (I assume) you maybe don't want it, it's why it works (imo): Carol is a beloved character. It should be tragic, sad, dramatic and impactful to work. And that's one of the stuff Disney/Marvel is missing too: balls for dramatic stakes.

This story adds a tragic layer and has a big emotional impact on both Carol and Rogue. It adds a lawyer of abuse between Rogue and Raven. It adds that distrust layer between Rogue and the X-Men. It adds another layer of trauma for Rogue, between other things.

It's true that The Marvels flopped, Larson has been harassed on social media and we don't know how long we'll have Carol in the MCU. Not to mention she has different powers too.

But regardless if they'll adapt that story or not, the essence they should keep is giving Rogue that tragic, traumatic, dramatic and impactful origin story. And I don't think replacing Carol by Gladiator for instance would necessarily work because, again, it's not just about the powers.

Oh and just for the record, Carol doesn't have to be in coma or depowered for it to work.

Anyway, lets hope they make the best decision.

How many of you have actually read the issues around that time? Because I gotta tell you, a LOT of the more agreeable parts on Carol's side, IE the memory loss, has already been done in her own films. The power loss is in direct contradiction to her first movie. And I'm sorry, if I would like Carol to not be the tragedy punching bag she was quite often in the comic books.

Rogue's side of the issue is not dependent on Carol. Frankly, a lot of the issues with Carol was more addressed with Cody in the animated series. And to be quite frank, once you have to start doing some major, major changes to avoid the very much sexual assault parallels in the original event, why is it so important?

Are people this upset because Hank Pym hasn't punched Janet?

That's where our perception changes. You can't see any adaptation of this without "ruining" Carol. I don't want that either.

I see X-Men 1 as a good example of how it could be adapted. Just replace Erik/the machine for Carol and add Raven manipulating Rogue. It was a quite traumatic event for her. Erik got weakened right there in that moment and was perfectly fine in X2 and other appearences. Why not Carol.

But then that version of Rogue didn't get Erik's power, nor had the strong personality, or a relationship with Mystique, etc...

But I get that you don't want that for Carol after so many **** from the comics. I'm not trying to convince you or anything. Just pointing out that some of us don't want to see Carol "ruined" either.

I'm fine with some other character replacing Carol. But it shouldn't be treated as something trivial, just how she gets her powers. It should be well thought in terms of giving Rogue that traumatic and impactful origin that adds a bunch of layers to her and her relationships.

I think it's definitely important to give Rogue her TAS powerset, and I can't think of a better way than to have her get them from Carol. She needs to get them from an established hero who has innate flight and super strength. And the fact that Carol is so powerful--with power that comes from an infinity stone--would be a highly intuitive explanation for why Rogue would be permanently altered after absorbing Carol's powers, even if she doesn't keep the energy manipulation permanently.

What I'd do is I'd just have it cause Carol to lose her powers for awhile, no coma or memory loss. Have her move into an apartment near Kamala and make her a recurring character in Ms. Marvel season 2 or 3.

If they find the right person to play Rogue, she could explode in popularity. The sassy personality is the real superpower. :D

Growing up in the 90s, Rogue was basically the closest thing we had to a female Superman-esque character (in terms of being a flying brick) until Supergirl was introduced in Superman TAS. Like thinking back to the Marvel/DC cartoons I watched in the 90s...

Superfriends
Spider-man
X-men
The Incredible Hulk
Fantastic 4
Batman
Superman

Then Justice League and Teen Titans came out in the early 2000s, which is the first time I ever saw female DC heroes in the same kind of prominent role that the female X-men had (and the first time I ever saw Wonder Woman fly around and punch things like I'd already seen Rogue do years prior).

Thinking about it, in terms of having the same kind of pure childhood nostalgia I have for male characters like Batman, Superman, and Spider-man, my list of nostalgic female superheroes would basically go like this:

1. Rogue, Jubilee, Storm, Jean
2. Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl
3. Jayna from the Wonder Twins (seriously DC should make a Wonder Twins movie...JLU showed us how cool a modern take could be, but I digress)
4. Invisible Woman

-Above are the ones I watched as a kid, below are ones I watched as a teenager-

5. Hawkgirl, Black Canary
6. Starfire, Raven
7. Shadowcat (thanks to X-men Evolution)

Anyway yeah I hope the MCU gets Rogue right.

I'd absolutely want and expect Rogue to have her TAS powerset, but I think theres little to no chance they have it come from Carol, I'd prefer the X-Men to have as little crossover as possible for at least a couple films.

I was watching the Ted series and I reckon Giorgia Whigham would be a great Rogue. She sort of has a great blend between her TAS look and her Evolution look

I've finally seen the Marvels. While I loved Beast's look, I wish they would have moved on from the Fox-verse/Fox actors and introduced the MCU versions of these characters with new actors.

The FoX actors make sense since they are currently in the Multiverse Saga which will conclude with Secret Wars which would have variants from different realities.

They can have a new X-Men cast right after Secret Wars. I just wish Secret Wars isn't far out (2027).
