X-Men The Official MCU X-Men News and Discussion Thread

Regardless your point was Marvel never got an established and well known director, which is incorrect cuz they did with Branagh.
Ok, fine. I'll give you Branagh. There are levels to these things though.

I dunno, I guess I don’t see Marvel as having a director problem so much as having a volume problem. The style of storytelling they’re doing just doesn’t work with a heavy hitter unless you’re giving them a standalone project. You need someone who’s malleable but still has a POV.

I do think McQuarrie would play ball. Working with Tom Cruise has to require some adaptability I imagine. Plus he tried to get a Supes project going with Cavill if I recall correctly. He just doesn’t feel right for X-Men to me. I could maybe see him doing a Ghost Rider flick if they got Gosling to star though.

Plenty of directors have done great work for Marvel. I do appreciate when they find diamonds in the rough, more recently with Zao, Giacchino and Matt Shakman. Even a newbie like Schreier has me excited for the Thunderbolts film from what I've seen and read. With the exception of Zao and Giacchino though, the tradeoff seems to be to adhere to the house style that's fairly consistent with what's come before. Nearly 20 years into this universe I think they need some standalone flyers like Joker, for example. A heaver hitter with vision and that isn't tethered to that Atlanta studio would do wonders. It doesn't even have to be a heavy hitter per se, just be willing to try something outside the box every now and then. You wouldn't have thought Todd Phillips and the Joker would be a great match if you were making a list of people you'd want to direct a film like that. In retrospect it makes perfect sense.

A great director with a great filmography should be a priority. If he/she is also a fan of the source material or the x-men franchise/TAS show, it would be a nice plus.

But but lets not forget about the script: that is the 80% of a great film. You can have a big name "Oscar winner" director, but if the script is mediocre, there so little a director can do. The script needs to be really really strong. So fingers crossed they let the writer do his thing, with great concepts, scenes and dialogue between our dear X-Men, and doesnt sideline pivotal x-men like Cyclops, Storm, Rogue and co. like past movies.

It’ll be fun if they do the whole Storm, rogue and Betsy having a shopping trip scene when they first meet Jubilee. That would be cool to see
Haha, I’d love a shopping trip scene. :D

McQuarrie co-wrote (uncredited) the original Singer film and The Wolverine. He's already worked on this franchise.

No doubt; the Fox films are better for his involvement. And he honestly works quite nicely with the MCU method—for the M:I movies, he and Cruise mapped out the stunts and then built the story/script around it. Just like the MCU does when mapping out it’s action sequences. I think McQuarrie has proven he can work well under shifting schedules and script changes.

That said, I’m really looking for that Matt Reeves-type energy. A clear fan of the comics and a good resume to boot.

That's why I mentioned him, he clearly has an interest in the genre. There were also loud rumors about him being interested in Superman awhile back.

I am also a fan of the writer/director approach. They hired Michael Lesslie as writer, but rewrites are par for the course at Marvel.

Lol I like Morph. More queer representation and a fun visual look & power. Loved him from Exiles back in the day too.
With so many X-Men that were wasted in the previous films, I really don't think Morph deserves a spot. Thats like adding Spyke in the MCU, because someone liked him in the cartoons.

Christopher McQuarrie's last 3 films as a director have excellent reviews and I have enjoyed them.

I think he can handle a big cast and action. So the only reason I don't see why he won't be a good fit for the X-Men if the script is poor and he couldn't salvage it. Plus he worked on previous X-Men films, so he had experience when it comes to the mutants.

Here's the thing with a franchise with as many characters as the X-men has. Expecting specific characters will only lead to heart break. Instead, you must be willing to be sold on a composition, and characters. Your favorites were not always top characters.

But would you rather see Morph more than X-Men like Colossus, Iceman, Psylocke, Angel, Polaris, Havok, Banshee, Forge to name a few.

And I don't expect them all to get a great adaptation. Some of those would be lucky to appear in 1 movie. But with so many essential X-Men, there's really no need to put Morph into the forefront, especially in the first MCU X-Men film.

Yes.

Not everyone shares your character preferences and assumptions about who is or isn't 'essential'.

Oh, had no idea. Great to hear as it shows he has interest at least.

@Bayne I wasn't asking you. That was a direct reply to @Sithborg who responded to my post.

and yes, I don't share the same character preferences/assumptions as you do. I also didn't imply anyone should have the same opinion as me and have the similar classification of who are the "X-Men essentials".

I was discussing this in a respectful manner. I stand by my opinion, that Morph isn't a deserving of a role in a X-Men film. I am free to disagree on someone's preference since this is a public forum.

This is going to be a Hall H panel to remember. Marvel is going to go all out.

If its just going to be a logo that would be changed later on, and a release date that would be delayed later on, then they could keep the X-Men for some other time....

Marvel Studios' X-Men isn't going to come out in 2026. Save SDCC 2024, for their MCU films/shows coming out in 2025/2026 which is already a lot.

definetly some "X-Girls just dont wanna have fun" :beaming:

What in the world does that even mean?

Do you think Blade fans had fun with several logo changes and release date delays since it was announced at SDCC 2019?

And the Fantastic 4 also went through multiple release date changes. The logo they originally revealed is no longer being used.

Marvel Studios don't need to present anything for Marvel Studios' X-Men as it is years away. They have 3 films for next year, Avengers 5 & 6 for 2026/27, Shang-Chi 2 and several tv shows in the works for the 2025/26... unless you don't watch anything aside from the X-Men, I guess it won't be fun to you.

"X-Girls"...

Before '97 I'd quickly say 'no' to Morph. But goddamn, that character completely won me over on that cartoon. <3

I hope that remains as the 'official' version of them.

My prediction for the phase 6 slate:

The Fantastic Four
Blade
Shang Chi and the Wreckage of Time
Avengers Vs. X-Men
The Uncanny X-Men
Avengers: Secret Wars
