Tales of Zestiria introduces Lunarre and Symonne, new locations and systems
Published 10 hours ago. 25 comments.

Combine equipment Shin Megami Tensei-style to forge even stronger tools of destruction.
toz_smt1-600x337.jpg

With Tales of Zestiria‘s Japanese release date less than three months away now, Bandai Namco has opted to put out another press release detailing more of what you’ve likely come to expect from their reveals. Among the new information are more detailed character profiles for the previously revealed Lunarre and Symonne, as well as tidbits on more dungeons players can expect to explore, as well as detailed breakdown of various equipment-related gameplay systems. Catch our translation below.
Character Profiles
toz_smt2-400x720.jpg

Lunarre (voiced by Takihito Koyasu)
Gender: Male
Height: 185 cm. (approximately 6’3″)
“You really gonna make me say it? I wanna rip you apart and eat you up!”
Lunarre is a member of the “Bone of the Wind,” an assassin’s guild with a knack for showing up when you least expect it. Heartless and bloodthirsty, his twisted soul has brought about a complete transformation into a Hyouma. Highly cunning and greedy in equal measures, his part-human, part-fox-like figure is highly fitting.
Somehow or other, he manages to break into Izuchi, a sacred forest ground for the Seraphs, on a mission of some sort. Keen on fighting Slay and his group, he shoots off blue flames, further contributing to his beguiling aura. Sorey’s confrontations against Lunarre as the latter slinks about in the human world using his powers for his own horrific means force him to come to terms with the abhorrent reality of Hyouma transformations.
toz_smt3-600x337.jpg

Symonne (voiced by Hiromi Igarashi)
Gender: Female
Height: 152 cm. (approximately 4’11”)
“When you’re a Doshi, sometimes you have to take a stand and do something, no?”
Symonne is a mysterious Seraph who operates on her own with no friends among her fellow Seraphs nor an inclination to pay heed to any Doshi. While on the outside, she might just look like your average young woman, her words have a philosophical air about them, as though she observes the world as a mere bystander. Cold and possessing a sharp tongue, she regularly appears before Sorey and his party, her words and actions bemoaning the world and those who live in it, stirring up Sorey and causing trouble arbitrarily. Her intentions remain unknown as of yet.
Unlike the other Seraphs, her powers are special in that they aren’t divined from any of the four elements, in turn making her fate special. These extenuating circumstances may well be dictating her antics.
More on the World of Tales of Zestiria
Guilds
While the politics of the Greenwood continent might be dominated by two national powers, when it comes the flow of goods and people alike, there are some things that can transcend borders. The guilds are one such example of this. Made up of talented, like-minded people who work in the same profession, the guilds stand for the advancement of both craft and profit, working tirelessly as they share their knowledge with the world.
Beyond the standard types for businessmen, artisans, architects, freighters, and the like, there are also shadier ones that exist on the fringes of society that dedicate themselves to darker crafts like theft and assassination. Among the most famous ones are the Wagtail Feathers, a merchant guild able to traverse between both countries, as well as the Bone of the Wind, a guild of the more murderous variety.
New Locations
Prisonerback Marshes
The Prisonerback Marshes are a series of wetlands that sit in the southwestern corner of the continent, perpetually covered in fog. An unsettling place no matter how you slice it, in its still waters stand myriad gigantic plants, as well as mountains who tops have been flattened smooth over many years of wear and tear. While clearly unsuitable for human inhabitation, it’s not to say that attempts haven’t been made at it anyway, as evidenced by the decrepit tree-dotted roads.
The name “Prisonerback” itself comes from an old legend that states that corpses with their hands and feet bound together once washed up ashore. But with no records indicating that a prison or an asylum was ever built in the area, the marshes are shrouded in mystery.
Dungeons: Earth Temple Morgoth and Wind Temple Ginevia
“Trial Ruins” are ancient facilities where Doshi are thought to have been brought up in the distant past. Each one has its own high-ranking Seraph enshrined within it, filled to the brim with tests meant to push the abilities of any challengers who dare to enter them. So dangerous are the ruins, in fact, that they’ve taken the lives of countless would-be Doshi who tested their mettle.
True to its name, the Earth Temple Morgoth, for instance, is a place that truly looks one with the ground. However, it’s also thought to play host to bereaved spirits, a lonely atmosphere of sorts hanging about it. The Wind Temple Ginevia, meanwhile, is also known as the “Tower of Sacrifice.” Indeed, it is there that the lives of sinners are offered up to its Seraph out of the belief that their souls will be purified. Stretch past even the clouds, even today, people still seem to come to Ginevia to throw themselves off it in the hopes of achieving atonement.
New Gameplay Systems
Equipment Slot System
Each piece of equipment in Tales of Zestiria comes with four slots onto which Skills can be affixed. The first Skill within these slots is predetermined for every item, but whether any of the remaining three slots are filled in is left to chance upon acquiring a piece of equipment, meaning that two of the same variety can still come with different Skills attached. Currently equipped skills can be checked by pressing the R2 button on the Skill Sheet screen.
Although picking a character’s equipment on the merits of their abilities and sheer strength is hardly a bad idea in and of itself, careful consideration based on their latent Skills can also bring about unimaginable benefits later in battle. As such, the types of skills that the Skill Sheet screen break into two broad types: “Core Skills,” the fundamental ones that are affixed to the piece of equipment in question, and “Bonus Skills,” which are a secondary variety that are brought about through different combinations of Core Skills. Let’s examine three different ways that Bonus Skills can be attained:

  • Same Type: As the name implies, this type of Bonus Skill is conferred when more than one of the same Skill is equipped. In the bottom-right corner of each Skill’s icon, you can see a number that indicates how many instances of it are currently stacked across your equipment. This bonus is triggered with two or more of the same Skill in effect.
  • Elemental Type: This type of Bonus Skill activates when there are multiple Skills of the same element equipped that sit adjacent to one another horizontally on the Skill Sheet screen. Again, this type is activated when there are at least two Skills that meet this criteria.
  • Union Type: This type of Bonus Skill turns on when an entire vertical row on the Skill Sheet screen is occupied with actively equipped Skills.
Equipment Fusion System
It’s an inevitability that as you traverse the world of Tales of Zestiria, you’ll accumulate multiples of the same type of equipment. But, like we mentioned earlier, just because two pieces of equipment share the same name doesn’t mean that have the same Skills or abilities. That’s where the Equipment Fusion System comes into play, enabling you to forge equipment that’s to your liking. By bring two of the same type of equipment together, not only can you buff up their Skills and abilities, but you can also swap them out, as well. This can be done by paying a visit to an Armory and selecting the “Fusion” option.
In the example provided in the included screenshots, you can see the fusion process being performed on Sorey’s headgear, Ancient Earrings. His first pair of earrings only had the skill Locking attached to them, but his second pair had, another skill, and by fusing the two together, he was able to get a different pair of earrings altogether that has both Skills. Although the amount of Gald required to perform fusions varies based on factors such as the equipments’ latent abilities, it’s often well worth the cost just to consolidate skills into one item.
Equipment Proficiency
Each piece of equipment in the game has its own Proficiency Rank attached to it that can be raised by racking up victories in fights. With 5 total ranks in all, maxing out Proficiency comes with a variety of perks, particularly with respect to fusion, as maxed out items will yield even stronger results. As such, it’s a good idea to break in equipment as you go about your journey; you never know just when it might come in handy.
Tales of Zestiria is currently slated for a summer 2015 release in North America and Europe on the PlayStation 3. Catch a bunch of new screenshots and artwork at the gallery here.

Tales Producer Says He’s Interested In Making Open-World Games Like Skyrim. November 3, 2014 . 4:30pm

Tales series producer Hideo Baba talks about the new consoles, and the kinds of games he wants to make outside of the Tales franchise.

[YT]H5HIbM9eC64[/YT]
In a new video released by Bandai Namco, Tales series producer Hideo Baba once again comments on the possibility of Tales games being released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Regarding the new platforms, Baba says he doesn’t a

“I believe the next-gen consoles such as PlayStation 4 or Xbox One have big improved potential, but I really don’t want to focus on improved graphics when considering the future of the Tales of series,” Baba says.

“The Tales of series focuses on the characters and the storylines. Of course, we can utilize the improved graphics, but we really want to focus on improved storyline and more interesting characters. I really want to consider first the unique characters and world of the game and not necessarily how to utilize new and improved graphics.”

Moving along, when asked if he would like to make games that are different from the Tales series, Baba says that, while he really does want to continue to make JRPGs, he’s also interested in creating a more fantasy-esque open-world game.

“The Tales of franchise has a very long history and I really want to keep developing this kind of JRPG to keep the history going,” Baba says. “But outside of the Tales of series, I’d like to try and make an open-world fantasy game similar to Dragon’s Dogma or Skyrim in the future, something brand new.”

Tales of the World: Reve Unitia’s First Wave Of DLC Adds A Comical Scenario. November 4, 2014 . 4:01pm

The main attraction from the set of DLC is called the “Gift from a Strange Dream”.

Tales of the World: Reve Unitia, the Tales spin-off title that brought characters from different games into a strategy RPG, was released recently in Japan, and the game’s first batch of DLC adds some fun content for fans of the series. Famitsu shares more on what’s included.

The main attraction from the set of DLC is called the “Gift from a Strange Dream”. A mysterious package suddenly showed up in Lufres, which contained strange clothes and a hat inside, which reeked of Vule.

In order to protect the town from danger, the characters will have to step up to the challenge behind the mystery. While it sounds pretty serious, the scenario is said to be a comical one, which also includes a special event illustration map.

The report also notes that these events aren’t fully-voiced, and you’ll need to advance through a certain part of the game in order to take on the DLC event. It’ll cost 432 yen for the scenario alone. The following characters have a role in the story: Lloyd Irving, Luke fone Fabre, Tear Grants, Guy Cecil, Flynn Scifo, Asbel Lhant, and Sophie.

Additionally, there are also DLC with maps that help level your characters, one for the early stages of the game, which will be free until November 6, and 270 yen after.

The other one will have a map that helps you level mid-level characters for 387 yen, and finally, one that is used to help raise GALD for 387 yen.

Bandai Namco Say They’re Paying Attention To Fans. December 11, 2014 . 1:00pm

“Tales of Xillia was the second-highest Tales game in sales, bigger than Symphonia 10 years ago,” says Namco’s Nick O’Leary.

Bandai Namco’s booth may not have had the Tales of Zestiria I was dying to play at the PlayStation Experience, but I was able to find Nick O’Leary, the Senior Public Relations Specialist there.

One thing I’ve been wondering about over the last few years is why all of a sudden Bandai Namco is being so adventurous about their games. Look at the catalog. We’re getting Tales, Sword Art Online, Project X Zone, and so many other games that the company normally wouldn’t have bothered localizing. It’s as though it’s going above and beyond to make the general gaming environment better.

When I asked O’Leary about the situation, he said, “Nothing has changed internally. We’ve heard from the fans over the past couple years, that they want these games, and we took a chance. We’ll bring these games to you and see what the result is.”

It obviously paid off. “Tales of Xillia was the second-highest Tales game in sales, bigger than Symphonia 10 years ago,” he shared. O’Leary also confirmed that Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment sales were “above forecast expectations.”

He even had an answer for why this is suddenly happening. “The great thing now, in today’s gaming climate, is we can do different things. It doesn’t have to be retail. There’s digital. A smaller game like One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2, we can say, “Put it on PSN.” People can play it. If we want, we can do a limited run if people want it.”

With that kind of opening, I had to ask about two of my favorite, Bandai Namco series. I needed to know what could happen with Idolmaster and Taiko no Tatsujin. While O’Leary didn’t have anything to say on the latter, he definitely recognized the former. “I’ve played all those Idolmaster games. There are always talks if we should do it or not. Nothing has been announced yet for that series. But, a few years ago, if you asked me if Project X Zone was going to come here, I’d have said, ‘No.’ So, you can never say never.”

Before moving on, I had to ask about one of the unexpected stars of the booth – Dragon Ball Xenoverse. I was surprised to see that the game always had people playing and waiting, and didn’t have a chance to play it at the PlayStation Experience as a result. Which is no surprise. As O’Leary said, “Dragon Ball is a really special franchise. It’s been off the air for so long, but it’s more popular now than ever. Fans love it and for Xenoverse, the great thing we’re doing for this is we’re changing the script on the fights and stories that you know from the Dragon Ball universe. Tasks aren’t playing out the way they’re supposed to and you’re coming in to fix things.”

As a Bandai Namco fan, I’d keep an eye on the company over the next few years. It really feels like staff is listening to what fans have to say and, with all the distribution options available, we could end up seeing more unexpected games.

Rose confirmed as Tales of Zestiria party member
Published 9 hours ago. 27 comments.

Jump this week officially confirms Rose as a party member character in Tales of Zestiria.
Like Sorey, Rose will also be able to Kamui fuse with the party’s four Seraphs. Rose normally fights with two sword-like daggers, but when fused, her weapons will change. It’s also possible for Rose and Sorey to be in Kamui fusions at the same time.
The magazine also reveals four new characters as part of a “Feather of Sekirei” guild that Rose belongs to. They are:

  • Aiguille (voiced by Yasunori Masutani) – The leader
  • Roche (voiced by Mitsuru Miyamoto)
  • Anne Phil (voiced by Ami Koshimizu)
  • Anne Torume (voiced by Yuki Kaji)

Tales of Zestiria has Sengoku Basara 4 and Blue Exorcist DLC collaborations [Update]
Published 1 day ago. 35 comments.

Plus, previous generation and swimsuit costumes confirmed.
ToZ-SB4-BE-Crossover-Fami.jpg

The Idolmaster and Evangelion won’t be Tales of Zestiria‘s only crossover content. Famitsu this week reveals a collaboration with Capcom for Sengoku Basara 4 attachments and Blue Exorcist costumes downloadable content.
The magazine also reveals Tales of series previous generation costumes for the characters of Zestiria. Our source doesn’t clarify which character gets what, but Tales of Vesperia, Graces F, Destiny, Phantasia, and the Abyss will all be represented.
Swimsuit costumes are also confirmed.
Thanks, Sokuho@Hokanko.
Update: A few more details have come in via Re: Zaregoto.
The previous generation Tales costumes are of Yuri Lowell (Tales of Vesperia), Cheria Barnes (Tales of Graces F), Leon Magnus (Tales of Destiny), Mint Adenade (Tales of Phantasia), Luke fon Fabre (Tales of the Abyss), Milla Maxwell (Tales of Xillia), and Zelos Wilder (Tales of Symphonia). Zaregoto also lists Edna, but we think it’s a typo given that Edna is a Tales of Zestiria character.
The Sengoku Basara 4 attachments come from Date Masamune, Shibata Katsuie, Sanada Yukimura, Ishida Mitsunari, Shima Sakon, and Tokugawa Ieyasu.
The Blue Exorcist costumes are of Rin Okumura, Yukio Okumura, Shiemi Moriyama, and Shura Kirigakure.
Zaregoto doesn’t specify which characters get what costumes, unfortunately.

First look at Kamui Fusion Rose in Tales of Zestiria
Published 4 hours ago. 18 comments.

Like Sorey, Rose can also fuse with Seraphs.

Rose is a party member in Tales of Zestiria, and like protagonist Sorey, she can also fuse with the heavenly people known as Seraphs.
Famitsu’s latest online preview for the game has the first direct-feed screenshot of Rose in a Kamui Fusion. It doesn’t say who the fusion is with, but if we were to guess, we’d say Lailah, given the orange color (Lailah is a fire-based Seraph).
You’ll also see small shots of what appears to be Rose’s Fusion with Mikleo in the small scans provided by Famitsu below.

Tales of Zestiria is due out for PlayStation 3 in Japan on January 22 and in North America and Europe in 2015.
