Was the opening prologue a necessity, that was added after the elements of the return to krypton were cut from the film?

By this, I mean was the information that was provided in the prologue correspond to information we would have otherwise been reminded of in the scenes where Superman visits krypton?

I thought it looked out of place.

I was surprised and disappointed to see the prologue. Very out of place. I'd much rather have seen a montage showing him leaving, newspaper articles showing Lex's pardon and asking where is Superman, and finally some shots of Krypton.

I was waiting for "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far way..." to pop up. It seriously had the same color and text.

LoL

and I'm assuming that the visit to krypton takes place before the opening credits because the journey through space seems to be Kal's trip back to earth. And if it is so, it takes a black hole to get to the remains of krypton

I think they just wanted an excuse to play the music that went along with it.

It's kind of neccessary to set up Superman's speech to Jason.

I thought it was great. Fit very nicely in my opinion, and gave even more of an epic feeling.

Superman Returns was good.

Yeah that makes sense. I actually liked that scene I wish they had done some more with it.

i liked it. it had a Star Wars feel to it. :)

i didn't mind it....when you're dealing with an audience that doesn't follow the story as closely as we do you kinda NEED to explain to them what the premise of the movie is before the movie because ESPECIALLY when dealing with a story as confusing as SR is (the the main public).

I didn't mind either, though a little montage of what happened within the 5 years would've been nice.

No it didn't. And, Star Wars didn't invent that. That is just a variation of "A long time ago in a kingdom far, far away." Not to mention the opening scrolls were taken directly from the old Flash Gordon serials. Lucas may seem like he is very original, but if you really do your research, you'll find that he is not. I'm not trying to discredit the man, because nobody is all that original anymore...but the opening credits were probably the least original thing he did.

Are you guys talking about the text or footage of krypton blowing up?

Since you're obviously so knowledgeable, can you point out where ANYONE said anything about the originality of the text prologue?

I thought it was nice to fill everyone in on what was happening to beign with.
