sooooo, summer vacation is ahead of me and i've decided to spend it exploring the origins and history of rock and roll. That being said, i have no idea where to start, i barely know a few iconic bands from it's origins.
Help.

one of the main origins if i remember correctly i think it was elvis... than another big influence on it was the beatles. and so on.

Take a breath and ponder whether there might be a more comprehensive place to learn about the history of Rock than the Community section of superherohype.com. :(

Like, 94 thousand trillion-billion pages have been written on this subject.

EDIT: Jeez, I'm already getting offended. Elvis was from the time when the term was taking grip....but for the origins of the music you have to go farther, to hillbilly music and Africa, and blues, and Robert Johnson, and the comingling of country and blues, and......go research it.

i'll start with chuck berry, fats domino , little richard and then with elvis. from woodstock it starts already to split up into all the bits and then it'll get harder to track it

save up some cash, and go to the rock and roll history museum, learn all there is, than go off and travel from place to place, and record the spots where all of it started.

it would be soo worth it.

i am not american

Actually, Elvis' first single preceeded both Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Though he still wasn't really Rock 'n' Roll. Just a fun little fact right there.

People to look into:
Chuck Berry
Elvis Presley
Jerry Lee Lewis
Little Richard
Carl Perkins
Johnny Cash
Bill Haley and the Comets
Buddy Holly

Also if you want to go earlier than the first Rock record, go with Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Son House, Sonny Boy Williamson, Elmore James, Freddie King, BB King, Buddy Guy, and Little Walter. They all greatly influenced Rock.

I'm sure there are lots of books on the orgins of rock and roll. Also I've seen a few documentrys on rock history, heck there is a show on the BBC now about the seven ages of rock

Although it was only about a 4 hour trip (each way) i spent all my road time listening to only the American Graffiti soundtrack, Elvis and the Ventures.

Rock and Roll really is the best!

heavy metal is better bu rock is the **** too.

What is Heavy Metal?
There are 90 different specific off-shoots.

Some ******s think Led Zeppelin is Heavy Metal. :o
People call Black Sabbath or Glen Danzig Heavy Metal, but it sounds nothing like Iron Maiden and N.O.T.H.I.N.G. like Slayer.
Then people call Hair Metal "Metal".
They call Judas Priest Metal, but they sound like Hard Rock to me.
And I won't even get into all the Nu crap and bizarre Techno hybrids.

It's a weird term.

rock and roll is essentially roots country and blues played at a faster upbeat tempo. so if you really want to start at the origins, you'd go with the old blues masters like robert johnson, leadbelly, sun house, etc...and the country dudes like hank willaims, woody gunthrie, johnny cash, and loretta lynn. but if your wanting to start with when rock became rock, you start with chuck berry, he's the man responsible for it all. you'd also then go to ray charles, little richard, etc....AND then you get to the dudes like elvis and buddy holly who made rock music acceptable for white people and pushed it into the mainstream. then you get guys like bob dylan. then theres the british invasion with the rolling stones, the beatles, the kinks, the animals, etc....

This summer I want to catalog every known species on the planet.
Help me out, Hype!
