The Penguin The Penguin on HBO - General Discussion

I feel like they're making a good job about mentions and references from The Batman.

We've seen people displaying the Riddler's symbol, the flood is directly impacting the story... And when it comes to Batman more specifically, well, there's no point where I felt like his mention was truly lacking.

A lot of things happening in the two first episodes are discreet events, secret executions, etc. There's nothing to really bring Batman's attention.
We could argue that during the drug transport from episode 2, someone would talk about him, but let's also not forget that this Batman isn't really targeting the mob (yet). It's his investigation on the Riddler that put him on the path of Penguin and the Falcone and it may seem to them that this case's now closed.

I nearly feel like a mention would have been too superficial for now.
Save it for a moment where it will really make sense to do it.

I get the impression, from the how Oz treated him in the movie, that Batman wasn't making a huge dent in the larger crime family. Yeah, the criminals in the street were scared, but the higher ups weren't. So honestly, it strikes me perfectly fine for the mob higher ups to not be talking about a random vigilante.

I'm also getting the feeling that the family may have been involved in getting Sofia sent to Arkham. Also something to think about, did Sofia actually kill those women? Because we know Carmine isn't above killing women.

That's how I see it.

Up until the events of the first film, Batman was more focused on his "vengeance", i.e. beating up street thugs, like the one who killed his parents.
The Joker arrest was probably his first real case (serial killer type) that led him to get closer to the cops and so, to Gordon.
And from there, we come to The Batman...

It hadn't occurred to me that Sofia might have been framed for her father's crimes, but it's a pretty cool idea...
Maybe this series will be a sort of hangman origin story, in the sense that Sofia will probably at one point, in a cruel irony, embrace this figure to get her revenge on the family.

I noticed that Sofia only cared about her brother and that got me thinking now.... What if Alberto was the one setting her up for his own crimes?
That would make a nice little twist and give her reason to completely lose it and unleash all the madness and rage she's struggling to contain...

The Batman always heavily implied to me that he was mostly focused on street level crime, yeah.

If anything it's suspicious that the killer was named Hangman and Carmine clearly had a thing for strangling women (Maria Kyle, Annika and tried to kill Selina that way as well)

What kind of offer did Oz make the artist to be represented in such a “favorable” way? :o

He does amazing work. I always think he could do a great, practical Two-Face.

Mike Marino is definitely in my top 3 collaborators on this license.
I've always loved make-up and often lamented that it seems too often neglected so when a guy like him comes into the spotlight of such a popular (and my favorite) license, I wish to see as many characters as possible in his hands.

If we're going to have Two-Face, it absolutely has to be made by prosthetics and by this team.
Honestly, if these images were the real deal, I'd be 110% on board.
There's even some interesting symbolism with the missing eye for a character like Dent...

Never saw How I Met Your Mother, but it's weird that most people don't remember her from The Wolf of Wall Street which was the same year she was in both.

Having only recently seen The Wolf of Wall Street, I don't think I would have recognized her since her role isn't that big. But still....seriously, did anyone else watch Fargo's second season?? I think that was where I first saw her.

I like that we are getting a bunch of episodes with loose references that aren't jarring at all and feel natural in terms of fit with the show and natural relevance to the show's story. I'm happy for that to continue sporadically and hoping for a Batman mention to come later (even if in season 2) giving the show much longer to show it stands on its own merits and doesn't need the wider Reeves-verse to support it (while it can still benefit from it).

All the seasons of Fargo were awesome. :D

This thing rocks. Never thought a Penguin show would be a water cooler conversation starter at work, but that's just how good it is. It's got the two things I always ask for with comic book things, but rarely seem to get: great writing and a clear, distinct visual identity. LMFAO at that one dude who cried for months on end on here that the show looked ugly or cheap, haha. Just a strange guy that one

I hope I am not jinxing the episode but I am going to watch the episode live instead or recording it tonight. Sophia’s backstory should be interesting. She looks so innocent in the promos. :dizzy:  :woozy::beaming:
