Can someone tell me what the appeal of Tapes 'n Tapes is? Several people recommended them to me and they've been critically acclaimed on all the hipster indie sites, but after buying their album, "The Loon", and seeing them live once, I've gotta say that, while very energetic and somewhat original, they bore the crap out of me. I find them to be bland and completely uninteresting. I have a theory that sometimes a band will come out with a new album and some obnoxious music snob or a website will trumpet them as this amazing band and then everyone just follows along and pretends to like it just to seem cool, even though the music is lame. That might very well be the case with these guys. Anyone else feel this way?

I haven't ever heard the band that you're referencing, but this happens all the time. It's my theory about how Coldplay ever got popular at all, actually.

I enjoy them. It's just pleasant to listen to. As a refresher, I'm listening to Omaha right now, it reminds me of an American My Latest Novel (though not nearly as good. Speaking of which, how about you all jump on that "Listen to My Latest Novel thing". thanks)

and these days, obnoxious music snobs/websites are usually about a month behind. Tapes N' Tapes got popular because their album leaked and one person who saw their early show praised them and the next thing you know you have 7000 people on this site alone who are all listening to them at once. Doesn't seem like a lot, 7k outta 250m, but it's enough to set these kinds of bands off...amongst the internet crowd, anyway. Though the websites you refer to certainly don't help...you'd think they would have some set of rules, like, stop praising ****ty bands. :O

you would hope so, but it doesn't really work that way, i guess. :(

i've got a friend who will buy pretty much any cd that pitchfork.com reviews. i hate it when people can't make up their own minds about music so they go out and buy and pretend to like albums that actually suck but got great reviews for some reason or another.

the high violets are pretty awesome, i just recently dug out some of the more obscure 90's arsenal I have a t the old homestead , this along with ecstasy of St. theresa are the very finest I could find.

welcome to another instalment of "Cool Bands Found On Myspace"

www.myspace.com/mhora: Mhora: a band from Monterrey, Mexico, that sounds very odd, yet very unique, I recommend you to bear through the lo-fi production and check the arrengements, even if you don't understand spanish, the singer knows how to pull an emotion

www.myspace.com/malloryampmickeys: Mallory&mickeys are a band from the souther region of my country, they sound kinda like sigur ros and radiohead, pretty good band

www.myspace.com/divisionminuscula Division Minuscula although these guys are from my hometown, I really don't like their music, but we've been around since 96, and these guys are starting to get pretty decent over here, I though I'd just throw them in, like I said, I really don't like them, but a couple of them are really nice dudes

I'll be back with more

The 'Aluminium' album is a series of avant-garde orchestral recordings of songs by The White Stripes. The record will be released in a limited edition of 3,333 on October 16. You can listen to some samples at the link above.

I was thinking, Motown Marvel and others have been putting links to the bands they mention

why don't we do this more often?

this way we can pretty much deem the "rulage" or "suckage" of a band pretty much in that moment

by the way, what do you think about the spinto band? http://www.myspace.com/thespintoband

I think they're kinda okay

and I found tapes n tapes good, but nothing out of the ordinary

out of the ashes of two of my favorite 90's bands rises.....

wired all wrong!!!!:up::up::up:

from "self" and "god live underwater" a very interesting side project rising from the death of members of either band, kind of morbid. but just what you'd expect if you heard either band in their peak. really "poppy" on first listen. upon closer listening it yields some cool things, both guys are magicians at producing.

true, but less "industrially" good comparison, I would've never tought of it.

Has anyone downloaded The Decemberists' new album? Apparently it's been leaked online.

yay!!!! no I have not, but I will now.
I only have the "sing's shirley collins" ep
