I learned about Brendan Benson from his collaboration with Jack White for the Raconteurs. I wasn't a HUGE fan of their music, but it was definitely good, so I checked out some of Brendan's solo stuff. It's freakishly poppy, but it's still really good. If you like the Shins, I recommend it.

Yeah, I've heard some decent stuff by Benson. He's a got a poppy 60's vibe to his music. Not bad.

woot yeah the raconteurs are pretty fun, my band was up late last night learning steady as she goes for a school house music competition on monday. Anyone looking for something a little bit fun, a little bit cool an perhaps a little erotic check out a band called punk bunny's song Pink Sock

Anyone ever heard of a band called Eighteen Visions? I stumbled across some of their stuff the other day and was pleasantly surprised. So many of these newer metal bands out of California, like Avenged Sevenfold, have left me wholly unimpressed. These guys actually play their instruments very well and their singer is pretty decent as well, actually singing more than growling his way through the music as has been the trend of late. They kind of remind me in some ways of some of the stuff back in the heyday of the L.A. metal scene like Guns & Roses and L.A. Guns.

The Birthday is shoegazzery Yumminess, with girls on vocals and wall-of-sound dynamics that blew me away the first time I heard them.
of course, like most shoegazer band, you really don't know if the fuzzyness is intentional of made to cover up some fatal flaw (like blurry pictures) but I have a good feelign about this band. will see them live soon.

nah! they sound kind of bitter :( like King Diamond without the hilarious satanism references.

Anyone grab The Mars Volta's new album "Amputechture" yet? It leaked fairly recently I believe... comes out sometime in August. I'm listening to the album now and it is awesome.

brendan's a rad guy. lapalco is his best album. 'good to me' is such a great song. and dont forget the other two raconteurs, partick keeler and li'l jack lawrence. they both play in the greenhornes, who are phenominal. and li'l jack also plays banjo in Blanche, who are so f**king good it hurts! blanche is like a gothic bluegrass band (the lead singer, dan miller, played luthor perkins in Walk the Line).

Slint's spiderland is a landmark album, great all the way through, but be careful, it's not an easy album to like, it takes time, but once you get used to it, you become hooked on it

I missed this post. I got hooked on this album back in college. I still Love it and though it's on limited rotation, at least it's on my I-pod  "Nosferatu Man"is the greatest.

Any recommendations on opera music?

I have been listening to some of them quite often, especially Masquerade, The Diva Dance and One Winged Angel.
