Very skeptical on the idea of this. But Frank Grillo has signed on.

The idea of a remake of Indonesian action sensation "The Raid" without the bonkers, surely-someone-must-have-died action genius of director Gareth Evans, or with the presumably lax approach to health and safety that's the only way some of the insanity of the film (and its even crazier sequel) could have been pulled off, seems somewhat pointless. But nevertheless, Screen Gems have been pressing on, with "Red Hill" and "The Expendables 3" helmer Patrick Hughes attached to direct, and they just made a hire that means we might have a sliver of interest in the prospect.

The excellent Frank Grillo, who broke out in the last few years thanks to "Warrior," "The Grey" and, most recently, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," in which he played a villainous HYDRA agent, has told We Got This Covered that he's signed on to star in the remake of "The Raid." The actor was said to have been being courted for the project along with Luke Evans, Anthony Mackie and Ethan Hawke: it's unclear whether any of the others have signed on, but there's no project that hasn't been improved with a bit of Grillo, so this is good news. Filming will start in January, and we'll next see the actor in a few weeks as the lead in horror sequel "The Purge: Anarchy."

My guess is that he's playing the Sgt. Jaka role. I like him a lot as an actor. And while I dont think this will be good. I hope to be proven wrong

I thought they had already done a remake but with a different name and it bombed... trying to find the movie I'm thinking of since it had a similar premise.

I think you're looking for Dredd. Not a remake but it was pretty much the same premise. It didn't do too well at the box office but it was amazing.

This might work(maybe) if they go in a different direction. Make it more of thriller instead of a martial arts movie. There's no way they can top the action in the original, thought it might be funny to see them try.

Nope. Definitely not Dredd. Outside of the "trapped in a building" aspect nothing about it reminded me of the Raid.

Brick Mansions
was it. I never saw it but the synopsis reminded me so much of it. Especially the poster.

An undercover Detroit cop navigates a dangerous neighborhood that's surrounded by a containment wall with the help of an ex-con in order to bring down a crime lord and his plot to devastate the entire city.

Brick Mansions was a remake of the French action film, District B13. . . and it was terrible.

The movie did indeed bomb at the box office despite having the late Paul Walker in it. He died right around the time it was released.

After the awesomeness of The Raid 2 i need this remake even less. A third Raid on the other hand Is what i definitely want!

Why bother? The original incarnations seem to be exposed well and popular amongst the international markets. This isn't really needed at all, I feel.

I've seen the first The Raid but not the sequel yet. I'm fairly indifferent to the remake as I know what to expect. A probably inferior knock off that deviates too far from the original (like most Hollywood remakes of foreign movies are). It does seem like Hollywood misses the point when they alter a foreign movie for the domestic market and scratches their head when it bombs. Perhaps make the remake closer to the original, only with English instead?

Whoa, you need to chill out. That will never work. Makes no sense whatsoever.

:o :down

I like Grillo a lot so I may give this a chance (I'm probably going to see The Purge 2 simply because Grillo would make an awesome Frank Castle but that will never happen so this might be the closest I'll get to seeing that). But yeah, I can't see this being anywhere near what the original was. And while the story in The Raid is good, a big part of what made the movie so special was the absolutely INSANE action sequences. I'm sure the action in the remake could be decent but you have to remember that the guys in the original film are MASTERS of silat (the style of martial arts used in the film). Even if American actors trained for months and months, it probably still wouldn't look nearly as impressive unless they use a ton of camera tricks.

I'm not against remake. But this simply doesn't make any sense. Why not make a remake of once upon a time in china,e but set in america, with Scott Adkins as Wong Fei-hung?

After watching the Oldboy remake the other day, I think I never want to see another remake again.

I think a part of my soul died watching that movie.

I didn't watch it yet. I want to because I like Brolin. But I'm not awaiting anything special, considering the original was very much a product of its country and its director.

It's honestly not as awful as I expected it to be, but they made a couple changes that just annoyed the living f*** out of me and just made the whole thing feel stupid and pointless. I'm not saying you can't change things in a remake, but when the change makes me feel like the entire movie was a waste of time, then I wish I hadn't bothered watching it.

Come on Kitsch. Don't be a putz.

Battleship and John Carter star Taylor Kitsch has been offered the leading role in Patrick Hughes' upcoming English-language remake of Gareth Evans' The Raid, The Wrap reports. The catch here is that Kitsch is also up for a major part in the second season of HBO's "True Detective," and it appears that the timing for both projects could overlap.

The Raid tells the story of an elite DEA FAST team that becomes trapped in a tenement run by a notorious drug lord, his two highly violent martial arts killers, and a personal militia armed with machetes and machine guns. Stranded on the 6th floor with no way out, the team must fight their way through the city's worst to survive their mission.

The remake will be written by Brad Ingelsby and produced by XYZ Films, which produced the original film as well. Evans will executive produce the project with the original film's fight choreographers also attached.

After Lone Survivor and The Normal Heart people were starting to recognize your talent. Don't f*** it up by doing such a risky movie.

The problem is, with remakes of foreign films like this, it could be detriment because movies like The Raid and Oldboy have transcended its original market and have gained international fame. Meaning people who wouldn't have noticed foreign movies, probably proactively have seen (or heard of) The Raid and Old Boy. They're too well known now because the world's gotten smaller due to the internet.

Aaaaand I'm out. He was good in normal hear. But come on Kitsche. You've tried the action star thing. Also, is it really THAT hard to find a martial artist for this?

He needs to do True Detective and rebound from there. Stupid man.

Exactly. TD would be a great look for him. Unless this new season is terrible.

Hell even Vince Vaughn might be doing True Detective. It's like celebrity-career rehab, haha.

Gareth Evans on The Raid remake.

For me there are two good reasons why I think the remake could work. Firstly, let's just get this one out of the way, the remake helped pay for me to make The Raid 2, it's very beneficial to us in terms of being able to secure the funding on The Raid 2.

Also, The Raid is not plot dependent. Once you get past the first 10 minutes, it's more about the adrenaline rush, and it's more about the experience. There is a plot but it's not hard to deviate from and come up with new ideas.

So I feel like when it comes to the remake of The Raid, they can keep the opening setup, the first 5-10 minutes can be the same.

After that they can branch off, they can do whatever they want. They can restructure the building to be completely different to the structure that I had for it. They can do a completely different architectural design and layout, and different gangs, different weapons, completely different style, different martial arts.

They have the flexibility to deviate, and so that's a remake that's one of those things where, OK, the remake isn't such a bad option, and it's not such a bad idea after all.
