The Real Truth Behind the Marvel Price Hikes

Alright.

*deep breath*

OK. Agree to disagree I guess. No hard feelings to you either, man. All the best.

I wanna thank everybody for my first Hype Gang Bang. I had a great time. And a shout out to Iloveclones, Good lookin' out, bro. And if you need any more Penguins tickets or if you want to sell yours let me know. :cwink:

Red Wings in game 5 by the way.

PEACE.

Godwin's Law wins again.

Hilarious! I had no idea that somebody actually quantified that and gave it a name. And in 1990 no less! Awesome.

wiki said:
Godwin's Law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies)[1] is an informal adage coined by Mike Godwin in 1990. The adage states: "As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."[2][3]

Do I get the Got-Called-A-Nazi-on-somebody-else's-behalf Discount? Or the Pens Suck Add On Tax with those tickets?

Pens make it two in a row because Sid the Kid finally gets one past Ozzie.

Hype Gang Bang....not bad...

I like the Nazi discount, myself. But I'll do the best I can to make you a happy customer, like I always do.

No Two in a row. Wings are gonna be fired up tonight. They wanna get home and win it all in game 5, at home.

"Hype Gang Bang" is cool, except I'm the one that needs a shower now, but what can you do? I still had a great time, and everyone reading this thread had something interesting to read.

So yeah, uh, comics...or something?...

Big fan of Godwin's Law.

As to the price hike, any regular ongoing comic that costs $3.99 I'm not buying with the exception of Booster Gold, because it's getting a back-up feature.

I never heard of Godwin's Law before. That was great.

The price hike sucks. I'm just gonna have to be very selective of what I pick up. Definately not just gonna grab something random to check out at $3.99.

It's gonna suck when 10 bucks isn't enough for 3 comic books.

What am I talking about? It sucks right now!!

I don't plan on dropping one title. My tenants, on the other hand, might be in for a bit of a surprise in order to help me pay for them (I plan on passing all complaints on to md, who inspired me...)

In all fairness, I don't plan on dropping anything I already get based on price. But I'll think twice about trying out something new.

But once I rob them, how will they pay rent?

ok back to comics..but I got my eye on you Spider-Jay
While I dont think this is going to hurt Marvel too much i think the real people who will be hurt by this are the owners of the local comicbook store

Yeah, Marvel will be fine. It's the Comic shops that'll suffer.

Now where did I put that bug spray? :cwink:

I agree, but maybe not for the same reason. Someone mentioned above that Marvel is trying to incentivize more of its customer to subscribe. That way, they have more cost certainty. I like the idea, but it's a two-edged sword: getting comics out of spinner racks and into LCBS's was and is a big barrier to accessability for a mass audience. A larger share of subs will make that even more so.

I hope not. I like to go to the LCS and talk with everyone who comes into the store. Hey its our meeting places. I also want to open my own comic shop when I get out the Navy which could be real soon since they are down sizing

Well when you think about it, we are fighting a couple of desert wars. Don't really need boats for that.

True. I meant the business terminology, though. I pictured Lumbergh from Office Space as a commander on a ship going, "Yeeeeeaaaah, lieutenant, I'm afraid we're gonna have to let your unit go. So if you could clear out your lockers by 0800 tomorrow, that'd be greeeeeaaaat."

Actually we need them more, as friendly spots in the area are off and on and resupply is a big deal.

I got pulled into that first mess in Iraq and I was just standing around like wtf did I join the Navy to stand in the desert blowing up IED's and trying to avoid camel spiders?

^ You're a bit older than I thought you were. You are talking Desert Storm, right?

well when the military has budget cuts that doesnt come from R&D or tanks/ships or planes...its people

Doesn't Marvel make most their cash from merchandising anyway. You can't go into a clothing store in Britain without finding something with a Marvel character or logo printed on it. I went shopping the other weekend and atleast 14 different menswear stores where selling t shirts, belts, underwear with Marvel charcters on them.

Right. Merchandising, movies, liscensing out their characters...Since such a small portion of profits come from the comics anyway, they're only taking a small gamble by raising their prices.

We can talk a big game, but who's really dropping NA? Couple of you maybe? It's just a drop in the bucket, man.

AND, it's a gamble that could pay off.......

BUT, even though a small portion of the money that they make, The comics are what drives the Merchandising, movies, and liscensing. They should be verrrrrry careful about weeding that garden too much.....

Definately pay off.

As far as comics driving merch, all those kids with the light up Spider-Man shoes, and skateboards and kites and crap, I wonder how many of them are reading comics? My guess would be none, unfortunatley.
