The Rebirth of the Silver Age?

I know I'll catch flak for this, but my favorite version of Aquaman would be a toned down version of the Brave and the Bold cartoon.
Good hearted king, popular, adventurous, loves the fact that he's got a hot wife, a good looking son, a great kingdom to run, and some kicktail superpowers.

The angsty, moody, grim, dark Aquaman, I've never liked. Frankly, I'm hoping with the reboot for something a little more endearing and charismatic, rather than cranky and constipated.

( I read the classic collections of black and white Aquaman's from the '60's and love them, I'm just not a fan of grim and gritty. As previous posters have said, optimistic doesn't exclude quality. Nor does dark and moody mean it's good.)

^^^^^^ They do, and cheap at that. You can find the 1st 4 collected but in my search I found this site, i mainly just supported my shop so I couldnt tell you how good they are.

Part of what I liked about the Sub Diego era was that it finally got Aquaman out of his grimdark funk from Peter David's years on the character. He was still stern and efficient as a ruler and in battle, but he was more enlightened and less angry. I'm not a huge fan of the boastful loud-mouth in Brave and the Bold, though.

Ah, I agree with you in part. But I want a FAMILY man for a hero, and Aquaman did it first and did it better than Wally is doing it now.
A good-natured King who protects his people and blah blah blah. Who is ALSO a superhero. I find that much too often, Aquaman series' seem to forget the balance between hero and king. They either make him strictly an Atlantean, and ignore his Superhero status. (Which I hate) or they focus soley on his heroing and ignore his kingdom and family and responsibilities (which makes the character very generic and boring as well)

As for Brave and the Bold, that's why I said a toned down version. Not so kiddified. A little less Johnny Bravo, a little more Captain Blood or King Arthur. (Although I don't find him so much a loud mouth as a good-natured and boisterous adventurer. Silent and reticent doesn't automatically make you badder, just as talkative doesn't automatically make you uncool.

At least, I'm hoping it doesn't :woot:)

You know what, I liked Aquaman in Justice. The series was ok but not excellent in my book, except for how they treated Aquaman. He was so freaking hardcore awesome, it wasn't even funny. An Aquaman like that would be swell.

I agree completely, actually. As much as I loved the Sub Diego stuff, I always wanted them to unite Sub Diego and Atlantis and reinstate him as king, since he was basically acting as defender of Sub Diego throughout that run anyway. And if you're gonna have a king/superhero, what better model than King Arthur, which Orin has a lot of ties to in the first place (another reason I like the water hand so much, too). However good the comics get Aquaman, it seems like the elements never come together quite as well as they could.

Yeah, I want something other than grimdark out of Aquaman too. Maybe not Brave and the Bold Aquaman, but someone who thinks it's cool to be Aquaman. If Aquaman doesn't think it's cool to be Aquaman, then who the hell will?

I think more people should read that Sub Diego run. That's just how Aquaman was there. There's actually an issue before it by John Ostrander that has Aquaman rescuing a family from a huge squall and confiding in the daughter (or wife, maybe; it's been a while) that he lost two sons, his wife, his kingdom, and his people but he recently got to a point where he realized the anger that had driven him for years was just meaningless. He'd found some measure of peace in that and stabilized himself so he wasn't so angsty all the time after that. It was a really good issue.

I wouldn't mind it if they went further than that. Not just at peace, but actively enjoying the life of royalty/hero. Someone who would hit town and it would be an event. Who would visit Hollywood and stop the Aquaman movie because Brad Pitt isn't manly enough to be Aquaman.

That could be cool. I got a sense of that in Waid's JLA portrayal of him, actually. Specifically, the bit where he gets to kiss Diana because he realizes he's the only "Prince Charming" available and genuinely seems to enjoy it and enjoy knowing that it's basically a perk of the royal gig. :)

Until someone decides to use him, so yea, almost indefinitely in a coma

Whenever a character is in a coma, theres a 90% chance they're gonna wake up evil or suddenly gay.

That is the best single stand alone issue of a comic i have ever read, just ****ing amazing.

Same goes for the *****yboy-Prime punch & the Lazarus Pits, too?

Being resurrected doesn't count. It's expected that something is usually wrong when you do, no matter the writer. Winick on the other hand is pretty much just gays and AIDS except for his Batman work (which is his best and surprisingly quite good).
