The Return of the DC Animated Showcase
By Kenny Eugene McCall, 6/18/07

Hello Hypesters:

For some time now, I've been doing the Marvel Spotlight with characters from the Marvel Universe in one shot, five-episode stories. But, I think that the DC Animated Showcase should make its return after a stellar first cycle, and a less-than-promising second (blame it on me).

But, as with the current and upcoming cycles of the MS, there are gonna be some serious and interesting changes, as many Ruby-Spears and Hanna-Barbera-created superheroes and adventurers will join the DC Animated Universe, as well as characters from a legendary toy company that had just purchased the DC Comics toy license two years ago.

Yes folks, as with Hasbro and the Marvel Universe, Mattel and its primary characters (Barbie, Masters of the Universe and Hot Wheels/Matchbox) will make their first appearances in the DC Animated Universe in the upcoming Brave and the Bold storyline based on the DC comic "52", which just ended and segued right into "Countdown."

Set one year after the events of the Justice League Unlimited episode "Destroyer," Barbie and the Rockers will set up shop in Central City as allies of the Flash and Birdman. Meanwhile, Eternia is the latest planet on Superman, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Martian Manhunter's radar, as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe make their first appearances as new allies of the Justice League and Young Justice. And finally, the events of Destroyer have brought both Lex Luthor and Darkseid, now with the Anti-Life Equation, to the mysterious racing portal known as Highway 35 and a showdown with the Hot Wheels Acceleracers as the two villains try to make their way back to Earth and Apokolips.

Speaking of the various H-B, R-S, and Cartoon Network heroes joining the Showcase, Space Ghost, The Galaxy Trio/Teen Force and The Herculoids will make their first full appearances, as well as Thundarr the Barbarian in the DCAS.

The Impossibles, as well as newer updates of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids, The Neptunes, and even get this, Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels will join Scooby-Doo girl group The Hex Girls as the newest members of the DC Universe music scene.

Young Justice is about to get an upgrade, as Ben 10, DexStar, Young Samson, a now-teenage Jana of the Jungle and a merged, teenage version of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup called PPG join the DC teen team in the Bruce Timm animated style.

The Justice Guild makes their very first solo-series appearance as Seaboard City is reborn, and a new mayor, Barbara Hanna, restarts the JG with many different H-B heroes such as the new female Blue Falcon and Dynomutt, F3 (Buzz Conroy's update on Frankenstein Junior), Mightor, Dino Boy, Moby Dick, Shazzan and even Mighty Man and Yukk, as they take the heroic call for justice

And, even Bruce Timm's own Freakazoid will join the Justice League as its newest member, as his alter ego, Dexter Douglas, leaves LexCorp and gets a job working at Wayne Technologies in its Metropolis Branch.

Of course the Brave and the Bold returns with a new segment called "Messages from Atomic Skull" in which the villain says some of the craziest **** ever!

It's gonna be a great 2007/08 for the Showcase, and just in case I forget to mention anybody else, you will see them in this cycle's Showcase in July. So look for the fun to begin on July 9th.

This is the Justice League Unlimited episode aired for the first time as part of the DC Animated Showcase, as Supergirl, Green Arrow (Kin Shriner) and Green Lantern (Phil Lamarr) are teleported to the 31st century to deal with the emerging threat of the Fatal Five! Plus, a sit-down animated interview between voice actresses Jennifer Hale and Nicholle Tom, and their characters, Supergirl and Emerald Empress, about this episode.

Episode Two: The Jabberjaw of New Metropolis

Here's something you never thought you'd see in thirty years, as a legendary Hanna-Barbera character and his band make their appearance in the 31st century! It happens when Kara and Vril Dox, along with Chuck Taine and Luornu Durgo, head out to LuthorCom stadium to check out a new band called the Neptunes, who are performing there. But when the Fatal Five attack the Legionnaires during the concert, Supergirl, Brainiac 5, Bounce, and Triad are about to get a serious assist from the band's lead singer: a 15-foot-tall metahumanoid shark named JabberJaw (Greg Cipes), who is looking to join the Legion of Superheroes (and bring his band along with him) in the process! Will he make the cut? Rock On!

Episode Three: Dream Girls, White Witches and the Legend of Zerox

Saturnia gets a visit from an old friend of hers in Nura Nal (Melissa Joan Hart), a young girl from the magical planet of Zerox, with the power to see into the future! But, there's a problem: Zerox is at war with the United Planets, and when they send Nura's younger sister, Mysa (Liza Jacqueline) to Earth to assassinate the president of the United Planets, Winema Wazzo (April Winchell) during a peace summit between the UP and Zerox, Imra and Tinya must team up with this Dream Girl to prevent that White Witch from killing Apparition's momma and further causing an interplanetary incident in the process!

Episode Four: Collen Thirteen

Good Lord! Even the Omnitrix exists in the 31st Century, as we introduce you to a thirteen-year-old girl named Colleen Tennyson (Meagan Smith), who has taken up the superhero mantle started up by her ancestor, Ben Tennyson, 1000 years ago, as she uses a brand-new version of Ben's old Omnitrix to help the Legion deal with a rogue magician named Mistress Anima (Tara Strong), who's looking to put an end to both the Legion and the Tennyson legacy once and for all!

Episode Five: Day of the Nemesis, Night of the Samurai

Apparition finds herself in a situation where she meets a young martial-arts master by the name of Val Armorr, whom she quickly falls in love with! But, they're caught between a proverbial rock and a hard place when a terrorist faction of alien marauders called the Khunds make their attack on Earth, led by a dangerous new enemy named Nemesis (Loren Lester), who has an old score to settle with the Samurai himself!

tunfortunately the are just fan fics but i'd say very good ones

Hold on guys. This is a fan fic. I'm just imagining how a series would work on network and cable television, that's all. Calm down. Knowing how the CW works, they would never do a DC Animated Showcase series unless they had to.

Episode One: DexStar Rising

Remember Dexter, the short, pudgy, little kid from "Dexter's Laboratory? Well, say hello to a now teenage Dexter Tartakovsky (Mike Irwin), who is now looking to bring himself and his robotic battlesuit to the Young Justice team, as the kid scientist makes his appearance in the Bruce Timm style, and slimmer than ever as DexStar! But will he be able to help the YJ squad when they have to deal with his old nemesis, Mandark, now working for LexCorp, and an army of dangerous robots called the Defendroids when they launch an attack on their Gateway City headquarters? And he thought DeeDee was bad when he was a kid!

Episode Two: Beast Boys and Jungle Girls

Hmm, here's an interesting conundrum for you: Vixen (Gina Torres) makes a special appearance as she brings in a young South American girl that she adopted that's got Garfield Logan looking to knock her up more than become her instructor! But, who is Jana (Kerry Williams), and what is the secret of her mystic jungle powers that's got this 15-year-old connected to both Mari and the mysterious Tantu Totem? It's something both Garfield and Mari have got to find out, as a reimagined Jana of the Jungle makes her first appearance as a member of Young Justice!

Episode Three: Rah, Rah, Rah, Sis, Va-Va Voom, The Pep Squad is Coming to Town!

In what has to be the longest-titled episode of the segment, Robin, Nightwing, and Arrowette are on the trail of the fashion-plate villainess Calendar Girl (Sela Ward) during her latest caper in Gotham City. But, Paige Monroe's got a surprise for all three of them, as she introduces them to four beguiling and bewitchingly new teen models called the Pep Squad! And, Sweet Sixteen (Jennifer Hale), Pom-Pom (Andrea Taylor), Bookworm (Katie Leigh) and Prom Queen (Cree Summer) are about to show Robin how to have a good time, especially when Tim and Cissie discover that not only are Arrowette and Sweet Sixteen are high-school rivals, but the little cheerleader is also Calendar Girl's niece, Phoebe Monroe! And I thought watching "Bring It On!" was an experience in deep thought!

Episode Four: Welcome to Young Justice, Ben Tennyson!

Cousins Ben and Gwen Tennyson (Tara Strong, in a dual role, and Meagan Smith) find themselves in a very unusual situation when they and Grandpa Max (Paul Eiding) help Cyborg, Raven and guest star Zatanna (Jennifer Hale) deal with a dangerous mystical dragon named Malchior, who is terrorizing Gateway City! That situation: Max Tennyson has been offered a job at STAR Labs, and Victor and Raven want to recruit both Ben 10 and Lucky Girl into Young Justice, especially when Cyborg discovers the true powers of the Omnitrix for himself, and Zatanna and Raven want to instruct Gwen in the finer points of magic! Yeah baby!

Episode Five: Battle of the Bands

Here's an interesting twist on the return of an H-B trio of girls and their Neanderthal friend from the seventies: The Hex Girls (Jennifer Hale, again, Kimberly Brooks, and Jane Wiedlin) guest star in this YJU episode where they, Superboy, Kid Flash and Wonder Girl are involved in Central City's annual Battle of the Bands! But the real story is not only the appearance of Flash rogue the Fiddler (Robert Englund) and his daughter Virtuoso (Hayden Pannettiere), but also of the Hex Girls' new rivals: The Teen Angels, Brenda (Countess Vaughn), Taffy (Heather Hogan), and Dee Dee (Sabrina Bryant), and the appearance of a time-displaced Captain Caveman (Frank Welker), who is looking to help Superboy and Kid Flash stop the Fiddler from using the Teen Angels to commit music-based crimes across Central City. All while Wonder Girl and the Hex Girls deal with the evil Virtuoso and her mad violin skills! All in this rocking 60-minute episode!

wern't the teenangels detectives and not a singing group?it sounds like your using them to replace josie and the pussycats who would be unavailable to this fanfic since they are ARCHIE COMICS characters
at any rate...go get 'em cavey

That's why I made them a girl group, Gene. Wasn't Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids both a musical group and a crimefighting squad at one time?

And based on the situation she found herself in the JLU ep "Ultimatum," She's looking to turn Titano into a new male human version of herself! Is our pretty redhead giant going to create her own Longshadow (Gregg Rainwater)? That's what Superman (George Newbern) and Diana want to find out, in this episode!

Episode Three: Princesses of Power

Susan Eisenberg and Kari Wahlgren both have dual roles, as Bruce Timm takes over animation duties for the ill-fated Masters of the Universe cartoon, and both Diana and Cassandra respond to a distress call from a far away planet called Eternia in this special two-part crossover episode with Superman and the Masters which will conclude in Segment 6's Superman segment with He-Man. Anyway, when both Diana and Cassie arrive into Eternia, they find themselves in a faraway part of Eternia that is ruled by the wise Queen Angella (Susan Sullivan in a dual role). Hijinks ensue when Cassie meets her lookalike, Princess Adora, and Wonder Woman finds herself meeting and battling alongside She-Ra, Princess of Power against a rampaging horde of monsters led by the evil Hordak (Colin Murdoch)! Everything that could go wrong does! First, the ladies end up tangling with a pissed-off Giganta! Next, our two little metahuman Swans, Valerie and Vanessa, start making out at 10,000 feet in the air in the biggest lesbian love fest that the DC Universe has ever seen! And finally, to top it off, the girls get into a fight with Granny Goodness and the Female Furies in the streets of Metropolis! That second part is for mature audiences only, dude!

Episode One: War of the Cheetahs

Here's an interesting situation for Diana: our Amazon Princess is at her apartment when she finds Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva, tail and all, in her pad, brutally maimed! But, what Dr. Minerva is about to tell her is about to make Diana's blood boil, as both ladies find themselves dealing with an even more vicious male Cheetah (Victor Rivers) on the prowl that's looking to finish his female opposite off in this episode!

Luckily, Batgirl is on the scene, especially when our witchy girl group find out who is the manager of Tiger Moth (Joanna Levesque), Dragon Fly (Emma Lahana) and Silken Spider (Cerina Vincent): none other than Killer Moth (Thomas Hayden Church), who's looking to score a hit on the Girl Wonder, and is also the father of the lead singer, Tiger Moth! Man, and I thought American Idol was bad!

Episode Five: Zatanna/Teen Angels: La Encantadora

As with the Hex Girls, Brenda, Taffy, and Dee Dee (Countess Vaughn, Heather Hogan and Sabrina Bryant), the Teen Angels, find themselves joining Zatanna and June Moone (Jennifer Hale and Amanda Bynes) on a music and magic-themed tour when they all find themselves tangling with a bewitchingly beautiful new Latina sorceress named La Encantadora (Maria Canals) when she challenges Zatanna to a magic duel live on television! Will Zee be able to respond to Dora's challenge, especially when she traps June and the Angels in a mystical bubble for which there is no escape? Didn't we see this before in the Marvel Universe with Jem? It just feels right in the DCAU with Zatanna!

And now, a message from Atomic Skull...

04.jpg

Atomic Skull: Folks, we have desensitized the thing that brought us into this mother****er in the first place, and in order to restore the balance of power in this mother****er, we must play with our own squishy and be the master of our own bation, bee-yotches!

Episode One: Superman, Master of the Universe

In a monumental cross-over episode that connects to the previous Wonder Woman episode of that same scope, a freak STAR Labs accident involving a brand-new teleportational device has just spirited both Superman and Jimmy Olsen right smack into a planet another galaxy away called Eternia, home of He-Man (Cameron Clarke) and the Masters of the Universe! Problem is: Supes and Jimmy have just landed right in the middle of a battle to stop an alliance between Skeletor (Paul Dobson) and Hordak (Colin Murdoch) that could spell doom for the entire planet! Luckily for them, Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl, and He-Man's twin sister She-Ra (all played by Susan Eisenberg and Kari Wahlgren) have arrived, and are willing to help Superman and He-Man bring the hammer down! Plus, what happens when Jimmy and Prince Adam get together to score with Princess Adora and Cassandra Prince respectively? Find out in this special episode!

Episode Two: Bizarro Girls

Okay folks, this is getting way out of hand, as again, that crazy Goth girl group, the Hex Girls, have just invaded Metropolis for a concert tour of unimaginable proportions! But, when the Toyman (Bud Cort) creates a powerful ray out of Bizarro's DNA, and uses it on Thorn, Dusk and Luna, a new, evil trio of twisted musicians have emerged! Meet Bizarro Rose, Bizarro Dawn and Bizarro Solaria - The Bizarro Girls! And when Toyman sends Bizarro and his new sisters out to menace Superman, it'll be up to Lois Lane and the Hex Girls to help the Man of Steel put an end to the Toyman's madness in this special episode! By the way, both the Bizarro and Hex Girls are all voiced by Jennifer Hale, Kimberly Brooks and Jane Wiedlin, respectively.

Episode Three: Superman Meets the Herculoids

Superman is on a mission to stop a powerful nuclear missile from hitting a nearby planet in another solar system when the blast from that missile's explosion knocks the Man of Steel right into the planet of Quasar! But, there's something strange about this planet, especially when Supes meets its rulers, King Zandor (Tim Daly), Queen Tara (Jennifer Jason Leigh), Prince Dorno (Scott Terra) and their friends, the Herculoids! But, when an invading force from War World, led by Mongul's wicked sister Mongal (special voice over by Julia Roberts), looks to take over Quasar, the Royal Family of Quasar and the Herculoids must join forces with Superman to take out Mongal's warriors! But, is Mongal proving to be more powerful than her brother?

Episode Four: Superman Versus the Space Spectre

Space Ghost (David Boreanaz) makes his return appearance to the DC Showcase as he helps Superman deal with an old enemy of his: the murderous Space Spectre (James Marsters)! But, the real story is when Superman discovers that both the Ghost and Spectre are revealed to be twin brothers on opposite sides of the law! Can Supes be able to help Space Ghost bring his wayward brother to justice before it's too late?

Episode Five: Lois Lane: Superwoman

Here's an interesting conundrum for you: What would happen if the roles were reversed, and Lois Lane suddenly had superpowers? Well, say hello to Superwoman, the Woman of Steel! and the adventures of Lois in tights begin in this episode!
