No Way Home The Road To No Way Home: The Previous Spider-Man Movies Rewatch Thread

Love Supervoid Cinema, and the fact that he's covering this is sweet.

I re-watched TASM1 last night, hadn't seen it in maybe 5 years or so. I think it's okay. There are some good things about it but the tone feels a bit all over the place and the script just isn't that great. I do feel for Andrew because I think he gives a good performance and it's unfortunate for him that he wasn't given anything better.

Also I know they've done this in the comics too so the film isn't doing anything new in that sense but I never much cared for the subplot of his parents having a secret important meaning and kinda heavily featuring them.

I bought the Limited Edition 4K Collection that has the first 3 movies. Its a great looking set. I watched the first two and they look very good in 4K. Spider-Man 2 is my favorite superhero movie with The Dark Knight. I need to watch the SM3 Editor's cut that is included. Too bad that isn't in 4K.

for mass appeal I think the biggest thing that brought the movie down was the recreation of Uncle Ben's death. Martin Sheen is a legendary actor but he could have been there for flashbacks. The 2000s trilogy collectively made over a billion dollars so the general audience knows Spider-Man's origin story, they didn't need to see it again

lol

in all seriousness I really am wondering whether it's worth watching the ASM series again. I watched a few clips of ASM 2 on YouTube, and I really like how you can see a lot of reflection in Spidey's eyes

Was going to wait for December to re watch the movies but decide to start re watching the movies now watching spiderman 1 going to re watch into the spider verse to. The way you first see Goblin in Spiderman 1 was pretty cool.

Aunt may in spiderman 1-3 was always so good. The conversation with Peter and her after Peters Graduation when Peter is sad and miss Uncle Ben is a nice short sweat scence.

Still cant believe we are getting William defo back has goblin. He is just so prefect in the role.

You know, I still haven't watched ASM2. Guess I'll have to get around to it now.

I wonder what the best placement will be for a chronological MCU viewing...I mean obviously there's technically no best placement, since it's a different universe with a different chronology. But will it flow better to watch all the Sony Spider-man movies before starting the MCU proper, or better to watch them all right before I watch No Way Home? Hmmm....

After rewatching the Raimi trilogy and now TASM1, I can definitely say I prefer TASM1 over SM1. I get it's not for everyone, but I really enjoyed what Webb was building. It's not perfect, but the way that everything is connected and feeds into the larger narrative was really cool to me. SM1 just feels so disconnected in comparison. Shame how it all went down with TASM2.

Ok, so I revisited Homecoming, its been a while and I have to admit I like it better than I remember. I've been harsh on Watts as a director but the guy does have some chops when it comes comedic timing. Theres some genuinely funny bits in this movie and some good Spiderman moments.

But the movie chaffes for me when we get all the "Mr Stark! Mr Stark!" drama and Peter acting completely incompetent. I get it, he's a kid, he doesn't know what he's doing, he's making mistakes. I'm okay with Peter making mistakes, thats part of his whole pathos, but I kind of grew tired seeing Spidey bumbling around the whole movie--especially since this is the same kid who stole Cap's shield. That could've been executed better imo.

You will never hear me argue for TASM2 because it is a huge mess... With a few good scenes and a gut punch (If slightly unearned given how out of the blue Harry going full Goblin is and then killing Gwen. It hurt to lose Gwen sure but at the hand of a villain we have zero emotional connection to.) of an ending.

But... It was overstuffed and Sony was far too reactionary in trying to placate vocal fans who were making silly arguments about "dark/grim" super hero films after both TASM1 and MOS became whipping boys for this criticism. (Which... If you really thought MOS or TASM1 was dark... I'm sorry, if that's the case I can't fathom someone who thought that's reaction to Schindler's List, Grave Of The Fireflies or Twelve Years A Slave would be... But I digress...) so Webb was forced to add elements like awkward Electro and whatever the hell was going on with that doctor at the prison and Giamatti's bat**** Rhino. There's **** in TASM2 that bypasses even Raimi era broadness and goes right to Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher Batman wackiness.

But TASM1? As great as stuff is in S-M1 and as fun and great as S-M2 is I prefer how Spidey is done all around in Webb's first movie not least of which is that this felt like a real city with real people and the presentation of high school life was also modern and of the moment. People say Garfield was looking too old to play a high school student but Tobey was 27. His Flash Thompson was 25 when that hit theaters. But Garfield looked too old? Suuuuuure.

And Andrew nails what a Peter Parker from the books would be in the sense that he's a young guy that is smart and Uber sarcastic who does let his emotions get the better of him. That so many went "but he SKAAAAAAATES!" as though that broke the character was... Mildly amusing.

I LOVED how Spidey's embracing of a heroic mission in saving that young child on the bridge comes back to save the day with Crane Dad.

My issues honestly come down to the inelegant way they went about Ben's death mainly just to differentiate this from Raimi and the lack of the Daily Bugle in his life in some capacity.

Otherwise... Yeah, I prefer TASM1 over the two first Raimi films by quite a bit. And those aren't bad CBMs by any stretch.

the bolded really makes me wonder, what if they just skipped the origin story entirely? I mean they eventually did that with MCU Spider-Man, but what if Sony did their own thing and based a Spider-Man on older Peter who's already dealt with the loss of Uncle Ben?

After having a really bad day, figured i’d put on Spiderman 1 to lift my spirits. Its been a long while since i revisited this old friend and i dont care what anybody says, Raimi absolutely knocked this out the park. Theres such a charming, romantic sincerity to this movie that is just completely foregone in modern CBMs..Marvel, DC whatever. They dont make movies like this anymore, modern cbms are so concerned with being subversive and winking at the audience that they forget to be sincere.

Sure was Raimi a little cheesy? Definitely, but that scene with Tobey and Dunst talking in their backyards and Peter is gushing his heart out to MJ and telling her she’s gonna light up Broadway, man i buy these two characters falling in love. Call me cheesy, sue me. Lol

I will always maintain those two movies get way more flak than they deserve, especially ASM1.

I used to think ASM2 was the best Spider-Man movie ever. I made a thread back in 2014 pitting ASM2 against SM2 and it straight up got deleted coz of how heated it was

That's definitely an annoying issue I've noticed with modern big budget blockbuster movies. Everything is just so meta nowadays, so self-aware. Back before...I want to say the late 00s...it was like filmmakers were working with a blank canvas, a pure expression of ideas for a fictional world. But then at some point it became more about looking back on those old movies and responding to them in some way (while conveniently recycling them for a new audience).

Though that being said. I actually think the MCU is a milder offender in this regard compared to a lot of its contemporaries.

I have the 4K Blu-ray set of the original trilogy, I think I'll get the ASM series next

Many have recently uploaded videos of themselves reacting to Raimi's Spider-Man movies on Youtube. Its interesting to see people watching them for the first time.
