Remember when the first posters were released from Comic-Con the Sandman was shown guarding a little girl... now that we've seen some footage from the teaser and trailer, has it been confirmed that he is protecting his DAUGHTER? from Black -Spidey? or Venom? any thoughts?

I think his daughter is sick and he's robbing armored cars and banks to get money so that she can have access to the best that money can buy.

In the comics, when Venom seemingly killed Sandman, he asked Spider-Man to give his mother a message. I think that in the film, Sandman will ask Spider-Man to deliver a message to his daughter instead.

so what, he gets a happy ending too, like Doc Ock? lol.

that's the cool thing about spider-man, every villain has his unique twisted mind and backstory, they just don't start killing people or stealing, they have a reason (even if its wrong)

I like the way Raimi recreates Sandman.

He's stealing all of this money and he's done some bad things...but, he's doing it to save his daughter. So, does that justify his crimes? Should Spider-Man take pity on him? Or should Spider-Man lock Sandman away, thus taking away any chance of saving her life?

This sort of scenario kind of makes you think. Is Sandman really a villain like everyone thinks? Or just a father, desperate to save his little princess?

Happy ending?? Ock went down into the river with his reactor to pay for his crimes. If that's a happy ending, then I'd hate to see a bad one :cwink:

I haven't seen this poster? Anyone got a link to it or a pic? I'd be much appreciated.

That's what I was thinking. He destroyed the only thing in his life that mattered after his wife died, by submerging it in the boiling water of the river...and he died because of it. Whammy!

i meant, he did the right thing in the end and tried to destroy the reactor and save the world! in the end, he came to his senses. i wish just for once, we'd get a true villain, bad to the bone from beginning to end. oh wait....VENOM. lol.

I think Venom is a great idea. He's basically pure evil and he compares nicely to Harry and Sandman (two villains that may not be all that they seem)

Venom should be the evilest of the three...Sandman and Harry will probably be relatable in a way, i think

You're welcome.

It is a really touching pic looking at it there. Hard to believe Sandman killed Uncle Ben looking at that poster. It screams sympathetic villain.

The best kind of villains are those that have a shred of humanity in them. Have a soul at the core, that makes them more believable. Like Osborn and Octavius. And from the looks of it, Marko as well.

I disagree with that. I think the best villains are completely evil. Rather, the best villain is evil itself. Take the Emperor in Return of the Jedi (and NOT Revenge of the Sith). He is pure wickedness, pure hatred, and he isn't even given a tragic origin like Vader. He represents evil itself, tempting Luke to the Dark Side. Take the Joker - the perfect modern Trickster figure. He's not there for the audience to relate to, he's there to beguile the hero and present a formidable foe.

I think in today's society, people have little belief in good or evil, seeing simply normal people and criminals of different levels. Thus they need heroes and villains in films who are not far removed from them.

Not a Star Wars fan, so I cannot comment on that one.

Take the Joker - the perfect modern Trickster figure. He's not there for the audience to relate to, he's there to beguile the hero and present a formidable foe.

Even the Joker has been shown in a sympathetic light. The Killing Joke revealed a background to him, where he was a poor, failed comedian, who could not support his pregnant wife, who subsequently was killed in a tragic accident.

Then he is forced into pulling off a crime at the chemical company, where he falls into the acid and becomes physically scarred beyond all recognition of his former self.

Now that I like. Adds layers to the Joker.

I have nothing against unsympathetic villains. I love them. Most of the Spidey villains are not sympathetic in the comics at all, including Ock and Goblin. But I like some humanisitic motivations to a villain, to what made them these nasty pieces of work.

I hope nolan keeps the joker completely unsympathetic. He's the goddam joker.

I want to hate him but love to hate him.

i think its just basic character devolpment for a villian to have a tragic backstory. i dont think its meant to give us a reason to pity them, more so just a motive for them to do the things they do.

well I doubt anyone's just evil right out of the womb.

I agree that it's not really meant to make us feel sorry for the bad guy, it's just a way of showing why they do what they do. Take Mr. Glass from unbreakable as an example. He wasn't killing people because he just felt like killing people. He had very insane reasons, but reasons nonetheless.

For joker though, I want an insane unpredictable guy who's one hundred percent unredeemable.

But ONLY in The Killing Joke (and post). The Joker went from the 30's to the 80's without being presented as sympathetic in any way.

Well even after Killing Joke Joker is unredeemable. Even he knows that. ie his its much too late for that line when Batman talks about helping him.

sandman is protecting his ailing daughter from getting shot by the police as you can see in the background, thats because they were ganna shoot at him, spiderman would probably show a little bit of sympathy for sandman because of his ailing daughter, sandman is robbing places for money because he needs to help his family, in this case help his daughyer stay alive.
