I love this movie. I've watched it so many times. Its a movie that didn't do very well at first, but luckily has caught on to be recognized as one of the best movies of all time. Everything about the movie is perfect, from the timelessly quotable dialogue to the intricately planned shots to the awesome acting, it's one of the greats.

Red: Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.

I believe it was severly robbed during Oscars, especially Morgan Freeman. It was up against tough competition though, such as Forrest Gump which won and really hasn't been forgotten over time like a lot of past winners. Plus you had Pulp Fiction, which many consider should have won that year as it was arguably a better film. I think it won because of its 'feel good' message.

Nevertheless, to reiterate for point's sake, MORGAN FREEMAN should have gotten an Oscar!

The film was budgeted at $25m, and barely broke that with a total domestic gross of $28m. On the popular movie site IMDb, the film is ranked at #2 out of 250 films, second only to The Godfather. The film does have the most votings of all the films on the top 250. On Rotten Tomatoes, its at an 86% fresh.

Red: Prison life consists of routine, and then more routine.

Red: [narrating] We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders and felt like free men. Hell, we could have been tarring the roof of one of our own houses. We were the lords of all creation. As for Andy - he spent that break hunkered in the shade, a strange little smile on his face, watching us drink his beer.

Andy Dufresne: Get busy living, or get busy dying.

Red: [narrating] I find I'm so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it's the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend, and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.

Red: [reading a note left by Andy] Remember, Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.

it was sad when that old man died.:csad:

One of the biggest crimes in American cinema when this movie didn't win an Oscar for Best picture and Morgan Freeman didn't win for Best Supporting Actor.

Oh yeah, I appreciate The Shawshank Redemption. It's another one of my favorite movies! Great acting from Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman as well.

The Shawshank Redemption is one of the few so called "triumph of the human spirit" movies that manages to come off as genuinely moving and affecting rather than just sappy, cheesy and cliched. A truly brilliant movie.:up: One of my favorites. I need to get the special edition for Christmas.

Dear Warden:

You were right, salvation lay within

my absolute most favorite movie of all time

Fantastic film,tale of ultimate friendship.

One of my favourite movies of all time and I hope there never will be a crappy remake.

One of my favourite movies of all time. An unforgettable cinematic experience.

Easily one of my favorites of all time (do I hear an echo in here? ;)).

The whole thing Red says: "Get busy living, or get busy dying" has been quoted by people so many times now though... it sort of gets tiring. I mean... as soon as you mention that movie someone has to say:
"Maaaan, that's the best movie ever... all I can say is "Get busy living, or get busy dying!" you know what I'm saying?" :o

True, but Andy actually said it first. Red quoted him at the end..."get busy living, or get busy dying...that's godd*** right".

One of the great films of the 20th century and one that has thankfully endured. Everything about this film is superb, the acting, camera and dialogue. I also agree with everyone else that Morgan Freeman should have two Oscars, I love him in this film. Tim Robbins puts in a fantastic performance, quietly confident. Five stars!

Just wait for Cyrusbales to come in here anytime now with that pretentious attitude of his racking on everyone who thinks The Shawshank Redemption is one of the (if not the) greatest films ever made to be cinemtacially ignorant who needs to watch more films.

What a load of crap this movie is!

...and what an unusual coincidence that the only negative comment in this entire thread is by a poster whose username somehow happened to resemble his...
