The Smurfs...heading to the big-screen!

if they wouldnt show the village i wouldnt be angry . but now that i saw that fantastic looking village i am pissed.

why not transport two humans in thier world? because you need IPOD,MAC,Katy Pery jokes.

I would argue that the original source material would be MORE marketable to kids than this movie. The original source material featured a young knight in training, named Johan, with a goofy dwarf sidekick, who discovered the secret existence of the Smurfs or something like that.

Make that young apprentice knight a 12-13 year old boy, and you have the perfect formula for a family adventure film. But no, apparently the studio bigwigs seem to think all the 8-9 year olds who watch How I Met Your Mother and who remember Doogie Howser (think about that one ...) will somehow get the humour of Neil Patrick Harris encountering the Smurfs in a modern day big city.

Totally agree with you, it makes no sense.

It reminds me of a lamer version of the Masters of the Universe movie. And I was 8 years old when that came out. I remember loving the Eternia scenes but found the scenes on earth boring and stupid. Most of all, I couldn't understand why they were spending so much time on Courtney Cox, her boyfriend, synthesizers and that annoying Gwyldor character instead of He-Man and Skeletor.

Kids and fans of fantasy in general like stuff thats set in a world other than their own. Now in a film like Thor or Green Lantern, bringing the characters to earth makes sense because that's always been a part of the story. But there's no reason to do that with the Smurfs.

Surprised this thread wasn't back up yet with the movie out today. I got back from seeing it just now and quite enjoyed it. A masterpiece or even a great movie it's not, but it was nonetheless quite entertaining and funny, and I felt like it was worth the $8 I spent to see it. Some of the humor is silly and childish at times, but what do you expect from a movie aimed at a very young audience? It kept me entertained and I liked it enough to buy it when it's out. I'd give it a 7/10.

Perfect, absolutely perfect. Definitely felt like I was watching the cartoon character come straight to life. IMO, there couldn't have been anybody better for a live-action Gargamel but Hank.

Well, the hideous reviews, coupled with the fact that I didn't like the whole Smurfs in modern New York concept anyway will keep me from seeing this in the theater.
Azaria's Gargamel seemed to be the only thing the movie had going for it, but that's still not enough to get my $12.

Too bad, as the classic Peyo Smurf comics would have been great material for a fantasy/comedy film.

I hope if there is a sequel, it is set in the Smurfs world/village.

why couldnt they make a 90 min movie about the smurfs, Gargamel and the village?

That actually was the original plan. It was going to be a trilogy. Then Alvin and the Chipmunks came out and fu...changed those plans.

“It’s a 3-D/CG Smurfs”, said Kerner. “You just can’t make those guys live – it’d be a little weird, but a 3D Shrek world of them - that’s fantastic.”

...

The “Smurfs” trilogy will be “the animated Lord of the Rings – through the world of these idiots. Because they’re sweet characters but they’re goofs. It’s a comic version, but still very heartfelt, version of Lord of the Rings – though not literally Lord of the Rings, but an epic story like that.”

...

Gargamel’s back-story is going to be fully examined in the film trilogy. We’ll learn “[more] about Gargamel and Smurf Soup and how all that began and what really goes on in that castle. What his backstory really was. There’s an all-powerful wizard… there’s all sorts of things that get revealed as we go along”.

Saw it last night. It's definitely a children's movie with a few jokes and references meant for the adults in the audience. Better than I thought it would be but not as good as it could have been either. Azaria definitely nailed the Gargamel role though. He and his cat Azrael were probably the best part.

I went to this instead of Cowboys and Aliens and I gotta say I don't regret it one bit. It's not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination but it can be pretty funny and any kid will love this movie. The smurfs themselves were fun and Azaria was fantastic as Gargamel.

^ - Agreed. I just thought it was a funny and entertaining way to kill 90 minutes. It won't go down as a classic but it kept me entertained. The Smurfs were all funny and Azaria, as said before, was perfect as Gargamel. I'd like to see this get a sequel or two, personally.

just saw the movie. i thought just from seeing a trailer this movie was gonna be crap. after watching it though, i liked it. it actually showed the village and their realm from the cartoons. they also kept up with the stuff from the show. like smurfette being made by gargamel. also gargamel wasn't just a weird looking dude. he actually was a sorcerer and did magic too. also he could talk and understand azriel.

there were some stuff not needed, dialogue wise but for the most part it was a good movie. i guess the need for the humans was to give the studio someone to market. i hope a sequel is in the smurfs' realm and it is focused on them more in the forest. that would have made the movie better. it was very satisfying seeing the smurf village. the only thing missing was a scene like in the cartoon's intro with gargamel casting that spell. i though it would show it when he was thinking about himself as a powerful wizard. i always loved that part when he says "ravage the land as never before, total destruction from mountain to shore".

now if someone would make a gummi bear movie i will be happy.

Any word on a sequel to this? I remember hearing if this movie performed well enough at the box office then a sequel might happen.

im sure there will be a trilogy it's just how these things work.

I think they just announced they there will be a sequel. Hopefully it wont be set in the "real world" again.

According to Deadline, yes in August 2013

Sony Pictures has targeted Aug. 2, 2013 as the release date for a sequel to The Smurfs, even though the studio at this point has only locked Jordan Kerner to be the film's producer. The notion of making a sequel is a no-brainer after the original nearly beat the pricier Cowboys & Aliens in its opening weekend and has so far taken in $135 million worldwide. It opened No. 1 in 23 offshore markets last weekend.

Just leave them in medieval times and have them interact with Johann and Peewit. I assume that the movieverse is in the same timeline as the cartoon and they've already dealt with them.
